SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

This week several from the Dalton Gardens church have been at the Pepperdine lectureship. There are few events in the brotherhood of the church that have the special impact that this particular event has. There are 20 different classes every hour on just about any subject you can think of. There are many singing groups for both early morning and late evening that you can choose from as well. The highlight usually comes during the keynote speeches. The congregational singing that accompanies the worship times is the best thing this side of heaven.

There are two different churches that come out of the same heritage, which many refer to as the Stone-Campbell tradition. These two groups would be the a capella churches of Christ and the instrumental Christian churches. The major difference between these two groups is the usage or non-usage of the instrument in the worship assemblies. There were some lessons from both sides of the "keyboard" given by very capable preachers at the Pepperdine lectures this week. One of the lessons was given by Victor Knowles of the Independent Christian church. Although he feels that instrumental music is acceptable in our worship times, he also says that a capella singing when done properly is more edifying, instructive, and understandable. It tends to be less entertainment oriented and encourages greater involvement on the part of the worshipper than does instrumental music. He also stated that while many traditional churches have decided to use instruments, he thinks it would be a mistake to do so. The word "a capella" is a Latin word that means "in the style of the church." Historically speaking, the usage of the instrument is a relatively new phenomena because the church did not use any instruments with any regularity until only the last 200 years.

Visitors that come to the Dalton Gardens church here frequently tell me that they have never heard such beautiful singing as we have. We have something to offer that we need to retain. It keeps God's command to sing, people are encouraged, and God is praised.

Have a Great Week!!

Shepherd's Corner
Within the ten commandments in Exodus 20, God included the command to "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you". And in Matthew 19:19 in response to the question "teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus includes the command to "Honor your Father and Mother". TODAY is MOTHERS' DAY. Every human being has a mother. And it is clear from Scripture that it pleases our Lord when we honor our Mothers -- not one day a year, but every day. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all you Mothers. We love you with the love of the Lord.
-From the Elders

Search Committee Communications
This is a reminder of the open forum meeting on Sunday the 15th, 3 p.m. here at the church building. Teens, parents, young adults, and all interested in future staffing and programming need to come with their ideas and suggestions.

While I have been asked to chair this committee, it is time to begin thinking of the composition of the full search committee. I suggest for your consideration that we need a diverse group and representative thinking for input. Be thinking of who might best serve to represent the following:
* Single parent family
* Teenage group
* Young adults, post high school to age 25
* Teachers, Bible classes, LTC, etc.
* Parents of pre-teens & teens

Congregational Meeting

C.C.S. School News
The book fair has been completed and we would like to thank everyone who supported literacy and our school by purchasing books during the fair. The teachers and classrooms will enjoy all the new books that were added to their libraries because of your support.

We have 4 1/2 weeks of school left. The weather has changed, and the classes are working on finishing up their curriculums. We still have 2 or 3 more field trips, literature units to finish, and the jog-a-thon coming up, so this final stretch before summer break will be anything but relaxed.

It seems that this year isn't even over yet, and already my mind is jumping forward to this summer and even the fall, not thinking so much about all the relaxing things to do: the swing that beckons on my back deck, the peaceful woods that call to me and my kids, the beautiful lake to swim and play in...but to my list of things to do: paint, redecorate and rearrange my classroom, rework and expand literature units, consider a new storage system for supplies, decorate my home, yard work, garage work, work, work, work...

Many of you know my penchant for making lists. I am rarely without a notebook with several lists going: shopping lists for two or three different stores, things to do at home, things to do for school, things I want to do in the future, things that I don't want to do, but that need to be done, and there is even a list that sometimes make my closest friends slowly shake their heads, purse their lips and tsk tsk softly (all the while thinking, "That poor girl is really losing it"). That's the list of lists that I need to make. I often let the urgent get in the way of the important.

There was a book at the book fair called Let Me Hold On Longer. It was written by a mother who realized one day that although we often pay attention to our children's firsts -first teeth, first steps, first day of school, we often miss their lasts. The last time they crawl up into your lap to be rocked, the last time they ask for that special bear to sleep with, the last time they run and throw themselves into your arms and you can lift them up and twirl them around. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets rushed and sidetracked in today's busy world. Our children's schedules can be almost as hectic as our own. The important gets pushed aside for the urgent.

In our ladies' class on Tuesdays, we are reading a book called "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" that addresses this challenge exactly. When Jesus came to stay at the home of Martha, she got upset that her sister Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus while she was a whirlwind of activity preparing for her guests. She actually called upon Jesus, almost reprimanding him, to make Mary help her. His reply? "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:41-42. Gulp. I picture Jesus saying this while making that face that my friends sometimes make at me and my lists. I'm ashamed to say that last week I skipped this class with the rushed excuse that I had just too much to do. I couldn't sit quietly at the feet of God for one hour. I did get some things done, but at what price? I need to learn to be led to the quiet waters promised in Psalms 23:2. I suspect I am not alone in this challenge. Let an earnest prayer go up for all of us to take the time to be still and get to know God in a more personal way. -Kathy Taylor
