Family News February 27, 2005
SHORT BY The last 5 sermons have centered around becoming a fisher of men. We refer to Jesus' last instructions on earth as the Great Commission. Here He asks all disciples to go and teach men the gospel by baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). Luke's version asks us to go out stressing a message of repentance (Luke 24:44-46). It is easier to teach men to believe and be baptized (at least on the surface) than it is to repent. Repentance is more than being convicted of your sin; it is more than confessing your sin; it is more than simply being sorry for sin. True repentance is correction of sin. Throughout the New Testament, we see that all of Christianity to be credible, must be visible. True it is a matter of the heart, but the heart must show its colors. When the Pharisees asked John to baptize them, he refused until he saw fruit in keeping with their repentance. When God saw what the Ninevites did, he changed his mind about the destruction he had threatened (Jonah 3:10). James told us that we needed to be hearers not simply doers (James 1:22). Jesus asked us to let our light so shine before men in order that God can be glorified. It is not about me getting pats on the back, but about God being glorified. Repentance is a decision to change that is made with the will. Many intend to change; many have given their heart to God; but we must decide to follow through on our conviction. Jesus came to cleanse us of our sins, but so that we can become the people God has always intended us to be. When we go out into all the world, we must not shy away from this all important teaching. Our annual MIQVAH youth rally is only two weeks away. This is always one of the high points of our year. This year promises to be another great one. The theme is "Everyone Is Normal until You Get to Know Them." God defines the norm. When we stray from His will, we venture in to the abnormal. What can yo do to help make this a success? You can open your home by showing hospitality to our guests. You can help with the food. You can keep the entire weekend in your prayers. You are welcome to come to any part of it. It is a very encouraging event. Have a Great Week!!! This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. -John 15:8

And, we need COOKIES for Friday night. ************************ There is a section of the book, Prayer, by Richard Foster, that I want to share. This will challenge your mind. At least it did mine. Foster is continuing with his discussion about times when we feel God is just not there. In prayer, he says, we are entering into a living relationship that begins and develops in mutual freedom. God grants us perfect freedom because he desires creatures who freely choose to be in relationship with him. Through the Prayer of the Forsaken(the times when we feel He is not there), we learn to give God the same freedom he gives us. Relationships of this kind can never be manipulated or forced. If we could make the Creator of heaven and earth instantly appear at our beck and call, we would not be in communion with the true God at all. We do that with objects, with things, with idols. But God is constantly smashing our false images of who he is and what he is like. Can you see how our very sense of the absence of God is, therefore, an unsuspected grace? In the very act of hiddenness God is slowly weaning us of fashioning him in our own image. God is wild and free and comes at will. By refusing to be our puppet on a string, or a genie in our bottle, God frees us from our false, idolatrous images. In our efforts to connect with God, perhaps we do try to see him as waiting for our beck and call....a puppet on our string. That makes us god instead of allowing him to be God. He does have the freedom to choose how he will answer, or not answer, our prayers. We must accept that, and in fact, be glad of that, because we know he loves us and always does what's best. Prayer is a living relationship of mutual freedom. We have the freedom to pray, or not, and he has the freedom to answer, or not. That allows for genuine love. C.C.S.
