SHORT BY
STUFF DAVE SHANER
The count of victims from the tsunami in Indonesia
goes up daily. This natural disaster approaches one of the worst disasters in
history. Many have asked what the church here can do to be of help. Even though
the worst hit area is one of the largest Moslem areas in the world, there were
still a lot of members of the churches of Christ that were affected. Despite
the gravity of the situation, this is also an opportunity for Christians to
let God shine through them in the midst of darkness. God can cause all things
to work together for good to them that love the Lord and are called according
to His purpose - Romans 8:28.
There are many ways in which you can help. Numerous community agencies are available.
Many times you do not know the administrative costs that can be involved in
some of them. There are two groups that I would like you to consider making
a generous contribution toward. Jim Rude will be traveling to Andra-Pradesh
state in India to work with brother G. Singh. They were also hit by the Tsunami
and have had many deaths in the region. Jim has worked with him several times
before in disaster relief, in preaching, and in helping out the local children's
home. They have had to take in many homeless children because of the tsunami.
They would appreciate your help. Please see the letter on the bulletin board
for more information from brother Singh.
We have also teamed up with Partners in Progress,
a relief work based out of the Windsong church of Christ in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They are acting as a coordinating point for Manna International, Helping Hands,
Christian Relief Fund, and White's Ferry Road, all of which have proven track
records for disaster relief. Bill McDonough, from Partners in Progress is going
to Sri Lanka next week, which was one of the hardest hit areas. He has been
a missionary there before and has a lot of inroads with the Sri Lankan government.
They have a solid plan to be able to help out right away. More information can
be found on the bulletin board or at
www.partnersinprogress.com.
If you would like to contribute to either of these works you may write your
check out to either the Dalton Gardens church earmarked to the group you wish
the money to go to or to Jim Rude or Partners in Progress. We will collect these
funds and forward them on the appropriate places. Be sure to keep them in your
prayers.
Have a Great Week!
And when he found him, he brought him to Antioch.
So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught in great
numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. -Acts
11:26

Congregational Meeting
This afternoon at 3:00 pm. will be our congregational meeting. This will be
a time to lay out plans for the new year. Also included is our annual corporate
meeting, which is required by Idaho state law. Be sure to come and be an active
participant in the work of the church. The LIFE groups will not be meeting that
evening of January 9th to encourage participation.
Tweener's Christmas Party!
The Tweeners will be having their after Christmas, Christmas party this
Saturday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m. at the Kish's home. Cost is $5 per
person to cover a casual dinner of snacks and dessert. Get creative and come up with
the looniest 'White Elephant' gift for a gift exchange. Please no children.
For more information see Alyssa Frahm or Michelle Kish. We hope to see you there!
The Gift of Oddness
Genuine Christianity should look at least a little odd in the modern world.
The Lord's church is home for people who are out of step, unfashionable, unconventional,
and countercultural. As the Apostle Peter says, we are 'strangers and aliens.'
Oddness is important because the most dangerous word in the Western culture
is sameness. Sameness is a virus that infects members and causes an allergic
reaction to anyone who is different. This virus affects the decision-making
part of our brains, resulting in an obsession with making choices just like
everybody else.
Sameness is a disease with disastrous consequences -- differences are ignored,
uniqueness is not listened to, our gifts are canceled out. Life, passion and
joy are snuffed out. Sameness is the cemetery where our distinctiveness is buried.
Apathy sets in.
We are called out of the world to be different - to show forth the love of Christ
- to be a light, salt, leaven.
Oddness is a gift from God, and sits dormant until God's Spirit gives it life
and shape. Oddness is the consequence of following the one who made us unique,
different, and in His image. (from Messy Spirituality by Michael Yaconelli)
Shepherd's Corner
As we look forward to a new year, it is important to remember to always be honest
with ourselves and others that we love. The church can be a place of comfort
if we will love one another and forgive as God has forgiven each one of us.
Let us learn to trust one another and share our hearts so we can heal each other.
Find someone that you can trust to spend time and prayer time together. Let
your heart be part of your personality and your speech be pure. May we all share
in the blessings God has granted to each one of us. What is your best New Year's
spiritual resolution?
-For the Elders
Take a quiet moment today to listen to God's voice. Who is the Spirit prompting
you to pray for? Why don't you give that person a call and let them know they're
on your heart?
Thank Yous!
Thank you so much for the prayers, phone calls and visits during Jack's recent
hospital stay. Please keep him in your prayers.
Love, Jack & Dee

Remember that if you use the kitchen in any manner, YOU are responsible to clean
up after yourself.
Also, there are at least six large cookie sheets missing from the kitchen. If
you have borrowed them or know of where they are, please let Joanna Wuest know.
Thank you.

A genuine, Christian hug is truly a gift from God.
A woman named Linda once was traveling from Alberta to Yukon. The highway
was rutted and rugged, but Linda naively set out on her trip in a small
rundown car. The first night on the road, she found a room in a motel near a
summit. When she responded to her 5 A.M. wake-up call, she saw the
mountaintops were shrouded in early-morning fog. At breakfast, two truck
drivers invited Linda to join them, and since the breakfast room was very
small, she did.
One of the truckers asked, 'Where are you headed? 'When she said, 'Whitehorse,'
the other driver said, 'In that little car? In this fog? No way!'
'I'm going to try, 'Linda said bravely. 'Then we'll have to hug you, ' one trucker
said. Linda drew back, 'There's no way I'm going to let you touch me!' The truckers
chuckled. 'Not like that,' one of them said. We'll put one truck in front of
you, and the other one behind you. We'll get you through the mountains.'
All morning, Linda followed the two red tail light dots of the truck in front
of her, with the reassurance of the big escort behind her. She made the trek
through the treacherous passage safely.
Friends are those who are there to 'hug' and help others through tough times.
-------------------------
I have often been the beneficiary, and sometimes blessed to be the giver of
many wonderful hugs. I believe in many situations we become God's arms as we
comfort and care for each other. Sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of
the fog on a treacherous road of life, and it is the hugs of genuine Christian
friends that see us through. Praise God for his wonderful love that we can share
with one another.

Trust * Hope * Believe
Each day I try to live by these....The growing process is a struggle that builds
a character that will live by trusting, hoping and believing in the kind of
life God intended for us to have.. I grow daily as I watch the children grow.
They teach so many valuable lessons. I smile now more than ever as I watch
the fruits of their labor.
The small group of third graders has come so far in their music lessons. When
they play the "D" note, on their recorders, it actually sounds like a "D" note.
It was almost painful to listen to them play at the beginning. This experience
is almost the same as listening to a first grader those first few months of
reading.... or watching the child that doesn't understand a math concept, no
matter how many different ways you have presented it. But the fruit is really
worth the waiting. And isn't it so with spiritual growth....You think, "Will
they ever really "get it"....or will they put it into action?'' Then, the next
thing you see brings a tear to your eye and warms your heart at the same time....
Some unselfish act of kindness or sacrifice that affirms everything you
hoped for. The children have demonstrated this kind of spirit, this kind of love,
here in my classroom, even though they are surrounded by a world filled with
selfishness. My prayer is that they remember these times and take them...through
the years... Through the good times...and especially through the struggles.
...And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also
rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
