Family News November 7, 2004 SHORT BY We would like to invite everyone to our 2005 planning session next Sunday afternoon. It will start at 12:30 and end around 3:30 p.m. We encourage all to attend but it is vital for all shepherds, deacons, and staff to be present. A special thank you goes out to Scott Rouse for his outstanding drama meditations that he presented to us as a part of the Lord's Supper last month. It helped us to be mindful of what was going through their minds as Jesus' final days were approached. It is so easy for something to become a routine in such a way that we don't give the event much thought. We must seek different methods to reach out with the timeless message of the cross. Of course, we always want to be faithful to scripture, but God has also placed us in a culture where we can honor scripture and reach out in ways that would have been more difficult not too many years ago. We live in a wonderful age. God is giving us many opportunities to share the gospel to our friends that we need to be observant of. Always keep these in your thoughts and prayers as we all work together to build up the Lord's church. The elections are over. Are you relieved? This most recent campaign was the most rancorous that I have ever seen. But I am amazed how easily people are able to put the campaign behind them and roll up their sleeves. So much of what is said by candidates during the campaign is for political gain. There was good that can be found in all of the candidates, but many contribute the outcome to the attention paid to moral issues. There really is a clash of cultures in the United States. Sadly, I tell people that I am basically a one issue voter. If one candidate believes in a person's right to gets an abortion and another does not, then the pro-life candidate always get my vote. I may often not agree with the pro-life candidate on other issues, but life is sacred. Respect for human life starts in the womb. All abortions are wrong, but those who support partial birth abortions, where the baby's life is taken as it about to be born, is untenable. We need to pray that as new judges are appointed, as they are likely to be over the next four years, that our leaders will seek God's direction in the matter. Remember that God said, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people." - Proverbs 14:34 Have a Great Week!! It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. - 1 Corinthians 13:5
Ladies Thanksgiving Tea Ladies of all ages, you are invited to a Thanksgiving Tea at the home of Marcie Nelson this Saturday, November 13, at 12:00 p.m. Come with a spirit of thankfulness and fellowship and your favorite finger foods to share. Church Planning Session There will a church planning session next Sunday on November 14th from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the church building. All are invited but elders, deacons and church staff are especially encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided. This session is designed to layout plans for 2005. Orphan Sunday The Churches of Christ 2nd Annual Orphan Sunday in partnership with Lifeline of Hope is scheduled to be next Sunday, November 14th. Many congregations will be taking up a special contribution and working together to reach a goal of one million dollars and relieve the suffering of 15,000 orphan children in many countries all over the world for an entire year. Ladies' Craft Day! Bring your projects and join the fun! Saturday, November 20th, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the kitchen. You should bring your craft supplies, a lunch, a dish to share for a potluck supper, and a small craft supply item to donate as a prize for lots of drawings. There will be craft bingo, snacks, fellowship and lots of fun! If you're not a crafter, come and learn something new. Join us for all or part of this fun-filled (and productive) day. All are welcome, so bring a friend. Sign up on the kiosk. Church Library News Update The library now has a nice second-hand computer, printer and library program. Irene Clark, Librarian, is now cleaning out all the items from the library so she can start working on categorizing books, videos, tape programs, etc. Please do not take any books out of the library at this time and please return any that are out so they can be categorized. Shepherd's Corner It is very interesting that normal every day people, especially those in the secular world, will spend tens of thousands of dollars to look younger and do procedures to help them live longer. They are not content with themselves or others, but want to be happy by changing themselves into something else. The scriptures are so helpful in letting us know that God loves us just the way we are, especially us who are less than perfect. There is perfection in Christ and grace in his mercy. Our hopes should be on things eternal, not on the day to day problems we each face. Think about what is to come and rejoice in being a part of this body of believers. Let the love for each other be our focus. Hug on someone you haven't seen for awhile or have missed. -For the Shepherds Calendar Correction The birthday of Teri Dupey and Holly Welch was inadvertently covered by a pheasant on the November calendar. Their birthday is November 28th. This is a prime opportunity to remind everyone that if their birthday or anniversary is left off the calendar or is on the wrong date, please let Kathy Taylor know. Sorry about that, Teri and Holly! Dave Hopkins is looking for a small apartment, one that will accepts pets. If anyone knows of one that is available please call Dave at 660-5109. In God's love, Betty Wilhoite 'Thank you' to everyone for all the cards, and the flowers, and for looking out for Mike and the girls while I was gone to Arkansas. Coming Youth Events: * 'Come Before Winter' Retreat - Nov. 19-21 Our annual Keenage Banquet for 2004 is now history. It was a fun, colorful 'Rain Forest Adventure' for all. Our Youth Group and youth leaders appreciate all the Senior Saints who were able to attend. You are a special group to us, and we cherish your friendship and good examples to us. Thanks for allowing us to serve you, as you have served us in so many ways. Enthusiasm - possessed by God. Every man is enthusiastic at times. One has enthusiasm for thirty minutes, another has it for thirty days - but it is the man who has it for thirty years...and longer who truly makes a success in life. Hebrews 12:1 says, 'Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.' I believe that implies more than living life with dogged determination. John Erskine was one of the most versatile and best educated men of his era. As an educator he was considered one of the greatest teachers that Columbia University ever had. He was a concert pianist, author of sixty books, the head of the Julliard School of Music, and a popular and witty lecturer to a wide number of groups. He had an excitement for learning that was contagious. Students flocked to Erskine's classes, not because of his fame or his accomplished career, but because of what he believed about them. Erskine had a strong belief that the world did not belong to him, but to his students. He regularly told them, 'The best books are yet to be written. The best paintings have not yet been painted. The best governments are yet to be formed. The best is yet to be done by you.' It was this enthusiasm for life and his optimism for tomorrow that became his greatest attribute and legacy. Always look forward and upward. Your greatest contributions in life - your best giving, your best caring, the best of your love - are yet to be given. When a person approaches life with such a positive outlook - with enthusiasm.... which is a life possessed of God, there is power and strength and desire to accomplish what might be thought impossible. A life possessed by God is only limited by what He knows is best for us, and far beyond any of our wildest dreams. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossible before they were done. With God all things are possible. C.C.S. CORNER SCHOOL NEWS November is the month when things really get busy around here. First quarter ends, parent/teacher conferences are held, practices begin for holiday shows, preparations are made for Thanksgiving lunch and the craft fair. My third grade class is beginning to prepare for our own booth at the craft fair. We have decided to make items to sell to raise money for Lifeline of Hope. Mrs. Freshour is going to visit our class to give us more detailed information on the organization. When I presented the idea to my class, their enthusiasm was so encouraging. In a time when so much emphasis is put on what we want for Christmas, these kids had lots of ideas for items to make with our class and were even making plans to prepare items on their own at home to bring to the booth. Please make some time to stop by the craft fair on Saturday, December 4th, visit our booth and help us help kids in need. Watch for more information about Lifeline of Hope and Orphan Sunday, on November 14th. There are so many ways you can be involved with our school and we need each one of you. We have a booster club which is offering homemade hot lunches once per month (in addition to the Tuesday/Friday hot lunch program already in place), they are having a bakery booth at the craft fair and are adding a gift wrapping service as well. Donations are needed for the bake sale booth and supplies for the gift wrapping booth: paper, ribbon, bows and tape. If you are interested in helping to support the school in either of these areas, please sign up at the kiosk or drop supplies off at the school office. Please continue to collect those 'box tops for education' and drop them in the collection box at the kiosk. So far we have collected about 1,000 box tops since school started! That translates into $100 just for cutting out a small piece of cardboard that is already in your pantry! We appreciate your support of our school and hope you have a great holiday season! The 9th Annual C.C.S. Craft Fair The holidays are upon us and the craft fair is only 4 weeks away! The PTO is again hosting the bake sale booth and this year we will be offering gift wrapping services! Volunteers are needed to bake items for the booth. We also are looking for donations of gift wrapping supplies such as paper, ribbon, tape and bows. This can be a day of great fun and is a good way to introduce people to our school. Please get involved in as many ways as you can! Happy holidays! Books for Sale! Georgette Rude has been going through and clearing out some of the older books from the school library. You are welcome to come by the school office and buy them for 10 cents each.
