SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Our new Family Care Ministry is doing great. Basically what this entails is that we are reaching out to more people with a message that we care. The LIFE group leaders are calling those who miss our Sunday morning assembly. Sometimes we find that they are out of town while others were unable to come for other reasons. It has given us the opportunity to find out about special needs that a family may have, giving the LIFE group the opportunity to visit and/or pray for them. Sometimes we find out that a person is struggling spiritually, and that we need to administer first-aid. If a person has shown a pattern of not coming to church, the shepherds then contact them about how we can help them. The people that have been called have expressed their appreciation for people noticing that they were missing. Some we have called only to find out that they were present at the assembly! This is why it is so important that each person fill out an attendance card. These are logged in a spreadsheet and the Family Care ministry is able to tell at a glance who was here.

I received an e-mail from a good friend this past week expressing concern that we, as Americans, stretch ourselves too thin with our time. This is very true. As a result many people are too tired to engage in all the activities that we want. In fact, I think we have an entire nation of tired people. And when we look back at what we have done, our accomplishment hasn't been what we envisioned so we stretch ourselves out even more to meet those objectives. The main trouble, in my opinion, is not the amount of activity, but that our activities are often born without God in mind. God can make any activity a joy and restful when it comes from him. Even church can be tiring if our reason for coming is to get our name checked off. Many in the world look at church as a convenience that can be placed low on the priority list. We need to remind ourselves that the church is the family of God. It is the only 'agency' that Jesus died for. There are many good organizations that are deserving of your time and attention, but none of them are equal to the church of Christ. God uses His church to lead the world to a saving relationship with Him. When it comes to priorities, where does God and His church fit in with you? He is everything to the disciple of Christ. Every other activity takes second place.

Have a Great Week!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs.  -I Corinthians 13:4-5

Shepherd's Corner

If what you've been called to do isn't bigger than you, it's probably not God's will. To me this is fundamental. If you don't come to the place of utter humiliation, if you don't come to the place of brokenness and weeping before the Lord, if you don't come to the realization that it is impossible for you to do what God has asked you to do and be what He wants you to be --- whether it's a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, or a business person --- then you have yet to be humbled. God wouldn't invite you to do something you could already accomplish, because then you wouldn't need Him! You wouldn't turn to Him or rely on Him. Humility is recognizing your dependency on God for everything.

Mike's Memos.....

Three or Four Things

Proverbs 30:18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I do not understand: The way of an eagle in the air....... The way of a serpent on a rock...... The way of a ship on the sea....... And the way of a man with a virgin.....

Only three? Four? Agur must have been some kind of guy. In the next 60 seconds I think I could come up with at least a hundred things that are too wonderful for me, and probably four thousand things I don't understand. Perhaps it would be good to take a look at Agar's observations. Just the fact that Agur was a person who could still be awed and amazed at things he didn't understand speaks well of his character. We live in an age today where people are not amazed at much of anything. Kids don't wonder, because electronic entertainment has raised the bar of "sensation" so high that "boring" things likes bugs, rainbows, mountains and autumn foliage produce nothing but yawns. Adults are typically not far behind.

This is a sad development because, for the person with Godly eyes, there is hardly a second that goes by that something amazing, wonderful and unexplainable is not in view: a cloud, a caterpillar, young love, a snowflake, a flower, an airplane, art, music, beautiful woodwork, ants, electricity, technology....God has given us a whole world to marvel at and amaze us with His creativity. There is absolutely no end to the wonder that awaits those who see God's hand in everything.

Also, just the fact that Agur admitted to not understanding these subtle things showed that he really thought about life and spent time observing it. Again, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, our entertainment mad society doesn't NEED to think deeply about life. We have endless resources of stimulation and entertainment to keep us occupied.

These verses help me to realize that I don't have to understand everything, know everything and have life all figured out. God is doing quite well taking care of things all by Himself.

Does anything amaze you anymore other than the latest blockbuster movie, theme park or entertainment extravaganza? How about the breeze? An ant? A bird? A flower? The clouds? Are you teaching your family to be amazed at God's creation, or man's concoctions? Do you or your kids yawn in boredom at a beautiful sunset, a landscape, or autumn leaves even while adjusting their portable CD player and finishing a handheld electronic game on your vacation to the mountains? Do you always have to have the radio, computer, or TV turned on?

It's a simple equation. If you constantly over-stimulate yourself with what the world has to offer, you will not be amazed or awed at the wonders of God. Entertainment is passive and does not engage the deep thinking processes of your mind (abstract thinking). Learn to examine and wonder at God's creation, think about it, be amazed by it, learn about it... God has given us a lifetime of stimulating and fulfilling discovery. We just have to want it.

C.C.S. CORNER SCHOOL NEWS

A Special time
Dan DuPey

We know that summer is now gone. God continues to show His Love, His beauty, and His power in the world around us for all of the seasons! We have heard many, many students comment on the beautiful leaves and their bright colors. We have noticed the coolness in the mornings and the need for warm, fur-lined gloves. The students have noticed the many days of rain that has kept them inside on many of their recesses. We have seen beautiful early sunsets and dark, foggy mornings as we travel to school.

But, God is special! He has given us some excited students. He has directed many parents in our direction. God has blessed us as a staff. He has opened doors for us and planted many seeds! We are so thankful for Marleen, one of our parents, and all the work that she has put into organizing our Box Top program. There are many, many different kinds of products that carry this symbol. Do you use Target stores? Have you used General Mills cereals or Progresso soups? We have a list of over 200 stores that are now coming on board for the Box Top program. We will be getting more and more of this information out to you Remember, we are losing 10 cents on each Box Top that goes into the garbage! Help us build this program. We have heard that we have a limit of $20,000. Of course, at this point, we are a long way from this total!

The library has changed its look! Seriously! Georgette Rude has spent so much time and energy to clean up our entire library. Ceilings have been washed, walls are now clean, book shelves painted, decorations put up, and movies and books are being labeled! We appreciate all that she does for the school.

The students continue to learn new things about Music. They have classes with Mike Reeves two days per week. This has enabled him to do so much more with them. Those who have not really wanted to sing are now showing us how God has blessed them. Well, some of them! It is good to praise the Lord. Oh, most high!

We have had several field trips this year already. Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. DuPey, Mrs. Utter and Mrs. Dehlbom have all visited interesting places with their students this year.

Did you visit the Book Fair? Again, this year, Kathy Taylor organized our annual Book Fair. We had a great variety of books for every classroom. We have appreciated all those that have been donated!

Last Friday we celebrated World Series Day. Go Boston! We have had many students very excited about Boston's amazing come from behind victories! It is on to the World Series now.

Remember:

Family Care Ministry

This ministry is off to a good start. We appreciate everyone in the church family filling out membership cards on Sundays, the Life Groups and their leaders for making weekly contacts with all those who are absent, and our shepherds as they will be making calls on those with special needs. It feels good to be part of a family that cares.
