Family News October 10, 2004 SHORT BY The Bible class and LIFE group numbers are increasing, In the first century, the early disciples would frequently gather together to learn the apostle's doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer. The purpose of our classes and groups is to help fulfill these same purposes. If you are not currently attending a Bible class as well as a LIFE group, please do so today. Our teachers work hard to be able to provide you with some quality instruction. Our contemporary issues class has been studying the issue of baptism for the last three weeks. We will continue this for one more week. Baptism has been a controversial issue. More and more churches are studying their Bible and coming to a more complete understanding of baptism. Most churches think that it is important for a Christian to be baptized. Many have come to the conviction that immersion is the only mode of baptism. While many churches are stressing the need to be baptized, it is still commonly thought of as something a Christian does simply out of obedience to God. Obedience is the highest motive for being baptized. What is still often misunderstood is the purpose(s) of baptism. While a person is on the track of learning about God, baptism is a defining moment in one's salvation. Acts 2:38 shows that it is for the purpose of receiving the forgiveness of sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Without the forgiveness of sins there is no salvation. I am very content with allowing God to decide whoever He wants to be saved. But I also believe what He has told us in His Word. Some have contended that the Greek word, 'for' (as in for the forgiveness of sins), actually means 'because' your sins are already forgiven. I would point a person to Matthew 26:28 where the exact same Greek construction is used. Here Jesus, in instituting the Lord's Supper, says, 'this is my blood which is shed 'for the forgiveness of sins.'' No one contends that Jesus shed His blood because your sins are already forgiven. There are many other reasons to be baptized. Among these are to be clothed with Christ, to be spiritually circumcised, to be added to the God's church, to be born again, to die to sin, and be raised to walk a new life. One does not have to have an exhaustive understanding of the subject to know what to do. Most of the instruction concerning baptism in the New Testament was to those baptized. Still whatever reason a person is baptized for, it must be in keeping with what God says. We are not judges, but God has chosen us to serve as His agents in bringing others as well as ourselves to a more complete understanding of His will. Have a Great Week!! Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. -Ephesians 5:1-2

Shepherd's Corner When you live a life of integrity, you will know the favor of God. When Joseph was in slavery, Scripture tells us, "The Lord was with Joseph and blessed him greatly." When Joseph was falsely accused and imprisoned in Pharaoh's dungeon we read, "But the Lord was with Joseph there too, and granted him favor." God was with Joseph when he was prosperous, when everything was sailing along with a favorable wind and a calm sea. But God was also with him in the storm, in the midst of great trouble, turmoil, and trial. In either situation, when God is with you, you never have to worry. If you're a person of integrity, it doesn't matter where you are or what the circumstances of your life might be. You can have the inner confidence that the Lord is with you, and will see you through! - For the Shepherds Tweeners Mystery Dinner Hurry and sign up on the kiosk for the best Tweeners activity of the year! The Frahms will host a mystery dinner at their home on Saturday, October 30 at 6:00 p.m. This year's party has a celebrity theme so look over the choices of what celebrity you'd like to be for the evening. Be prepared to come dressed as your famous celebrity and solve the evening's mystery as that person. Dinner will be potluck. Alyssa will soon be assigning what dish for you to bring. Cost will be $1.00 per person and can be paid that evening at the door. Please sign up soon, there's only space for 30! 'The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.' Proverbs 10:8 C.C.S. CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Hello from Miss Utter! The Box Tops kick off has been great this year. We have a goal of 20,000 or more box tops. My prayer is that anyone that can help will. We really need some new playground equipment. We have some great moms working and organizing this effort; just call the school office at 772-7118 if you would like to help. The Scholastic Book Fair starts next week, and as always it is a great time to shop early for (Yes) Christmas, and books make wonderful gifts. I had a speech all made out for our open house and only a few parents showed up, but that's ok, I'll tell my church family: This year we have teachers traveling, teachers that have young children, teachers that have college students and a teacher that has gone back to school herself. We also have a caring secretary and many volunteers. We need you to pray for us. Our ministry is so very precious. We need prayers for safety, guidance, courage, and that our Christian school will grow and our adoration for our school will shine in the community. We have a wonderful staff here at C.C.S. who are very dedicated to our mission. There are not many jobs where you pray every day; we are blessed. We are truly grateful for this building and any support we get. The love flows from the walls in our school, and having our own 'school grandma' is one of a kind! From my heart to yours, thank you, we love you with the love of the Lord. DON'T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR BOX TOPS! C.C.S. Scholastic Book Fair BIBLE BUILDERS MEMORY VERSES Children's Sunday A.M.
