Family News October 3, 2004 SHORT BY We would like to thank all the women and men who worked so hard for our annual Ladies Fall Fellowship. A lot of planning throughout the entire year goes in to make these so successful. Many were encouraged in their faith. Thank you to all who attended the congregational meeting last week. It was a very positive meeting with many good suggestions made. These are planned three times per year. Your input is very valuable. One item discussed was our new shepherding plan. To help us encourage one another in our Christian walk, the elders have asked the LIFE Groups to contact people to let them know we care. Everyone was asked to sign up for a LIFE Group. Those who did not sign up have been placed in one. If you would like to be in a different group other than the one assigned to you, let Dave Shaner know as these can be adjusted easily. A team records Bible class and assembly attendance. This is why it is so important that everyone fill out an attendance card. The LIFE Groups will get a listing of those in their group that were not present. We have asked that group to contact the person who was not here to let them know they were missed. This also helps us find out if someone is sick or has a special need. There are many reasons why a person will miss a service. But this can also help us in finding those needing spiritual help. After a third successive absence, one of the elders will make contact with that individual to see what can be done to help him. As a church grows, it can be easy for someone to "fall through the cracks." This is an attempt to fill in those cracks. One person asked me recently, "Why do the elders need to know if I am gone, anyway? They don't have to keep track of me. I can handle my own affairs." First, they have no desire to interfere in anyone's business. But at the same time, God has asked them to "shepherd the flock of God that is under your care." - Acts 20:28. They also have to give an account to God for each one under their care - Hebrews 13:17. Secondly, they simply want to be better shepherds. A criticism that has come before when someone has fallen away from the church was, "How come none of the elders came out to see them?" We know that a person's attendance is not equal with his/her spirituality. But when people slip in their attendance, it is very often a warning sign that something needs being paid attention to. Most absences are understandable. Others are a cry for help. We want to answer that cry. We really do care. Have a Great Week!! Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:4-7

Shepherd's Corner God calls us to a life of commitment. He works in the midst of commitment and obedience. Satan, on the other hand, works best in the midst of passivity. If Satan can get you to do nothing, if he can get you to commit to nothing, he can neutralize your life. Satan's greatest work is done when he convinces us nothing needs to be done. If we listen to him, we'll begin to say things like this---"I'll do this tomorrow--- I'll do it next week--- it's not that important--- it's really no big deal--- no one will miss me if I'm not there." If you are passive in any area of your Christian life, Satan will eat you alive. So how do you prevent this from happening? Stay in touch with the one who has already won the battle. Spend personal time with God. Make the commitment each day and watch him change your life! - For the Shepherds Tweeners Mystery Dinner Hurry and sign up on the kiosk for the best Tweeners activity of the year! The Frahms will host a mystery dinner at their home on Saturday, October 30 at 6:00 p.m. This year's party has a celebrity theme so look over the choices of what celebrity you'd like to be for the evening. Please sign up soon, there's only space for 30! Thank You! A big Thank You to everyone who helped with the Ladies Fall Fellowship, before, during and after. Our Keenage Banquet has been rescheduled for November 6th! LTC FUNDRAISER LTC BREAKFAST All donations go to the registration fees and travel expenses of our kids in LTC. Grits don't exist in isolation! No grit is an island, entire unto itself. Every grit is a part of the mainland, a piece of the whole. You can't have a single grit. Some of you are asking, 'What is going on with Mike this time?' I really haven't lost it. The first part of that thought from John Ortberg's new book, Everybody's Normal Until You Get To Know Them, is the story of a guy who was ordering breakfast during a trip to the South. He saw grits on the menu, and being a Dutchman who spent most of his life in Michigan, he had never been very clear on the nature of this item. So he asked the waitress, 'What exactly is a grit?' Her response was classic. 'Honey, they don't come by themselves.' Well, even though I'm from the South, I don't care much for grits, but I do care, passionately, about the relationships we share / should share as members of God's family. No Christian is an island, entire unto himself. We build walls; we close doors; we isolate ourselves, but this should not be. Jesus died to purchase the church, his bride, the community of believers where we are to share our joys and struggles as God's children. Stop right now and evaluate your relationships in the body of Christ. What will you do to strengthen the love in this church? The world will know that we are His children if we love one another. Do they know? Neither grits nor Christians exist in isolation. C.C.S. CORNER SCHOOL NEWS "I praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
