SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

This is Junior Camp week at Camp Prince's Pine. I will be directing this session so keep me in your prayers :-). Senior Camp was a great time. Andrea Tobar, one of our teens, was baptized Thursday night. Be sure to keep her in your prayers.

Last week, we discussed a desire by many to experience God, not just have a book knowledge of him. It is still true, however, that you can not know God as He would have it if you do not know what the Bible does say about Him. Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge." Many things in our Christian lives come as a result of experience. Not all of our experiences are good, but God can make good come out of all of our experiences if we will allow him to work in the situation. Much, if not most, of what we do is based on our feelings. Intellectually, we know that our feelings can deceive us, but most of our actions are still based on our wanting to do the particular action in question. Many people base their selection of a church on how they feel when they attend there. If they feel good about it, they return; if they do not, they look somewhere else. Feelings are important but they still must be subject to sound reasoning.

Our conscience, in part, determines our feelings. But it is easy for our consciences to become seared. For example, people do not like living with guilt. One that is guilty will do one of two things. He may deal with it properly, repent of any wrong, and experience God's forgiveness. But some, maybe because of pride, may not want to deal with it. But to overcome the feeling of guilt, we simply adjust our standard of right and wrong. When we do this, many sinful things all of a sudden do not seem so sinful any more. This is when we have allowed our feelings to overrule our intellect. But intellect without feelings produces a lifeless Christian. Jesus said the most important command is to love God with all of our heart and mind. It takes both to have right a relationship with God.

Have a great week!!

Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.  -Hebrews 13:17

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH. It seems we all enjoy celebrating our birthday. And rightly so since life is a gift from God. But what about our Spiritual "birth" day? The physical body will return to dust but we are born into the Family of God for eternal purposes. Church, we want to challenge you to think more about the true blessings of a new birth into the Kingdom of God - Christ's church. When we have a baptism, do we make a big deal about it? Do we love on that new brother or sister? Do we send a congratulatory Spiritual "birth" day card? Do we welcome them into the family with open arms? THOUGHT - If the angels in heaven are rejoicing over that new birth don't you think we should get a little excited too! Church, there are a lot of good things going on here that we need to talk up, however, double honor needs to be shown for our new Christians. -From the Elders

'Good Enough Parents'

In an article in a Christian family magazine, John Cox discusses the stress that drives so many mothers to try the be 'perfect moms'. One mother said she had started a trust fund to pay for the therapy to undo the damage she had already done. Another said she prayed nightly that the Lord would not let her children remember how badly she had treated them.

In a study of families, Dr. D.W. Winnicot discovered that children who are the product of 'perfect parents' actually become mis-fits in society. When Dr. Winnicott focused his study on solid, productive, well-adjusted adults, he found that none of their parents were out of the ordinary. These moms and dads loved their kids and disciplined them, and made their share of mistakes. Sometimes they were distracted and selfish, sometimes too harsh or too lenient. But when they failed, they recognized it, apologized to their children, and moved on. 'And their kids were cool adults.' He called them 'Good Enough Parents'. They were not perfect, or ideal, or even great...but they were good enough.

Someone described parenting as rowing a boat with five holes in the bottom. With only two feet and two hands, you're going to leave some hole uncovered no matter how hard you try.

Yes, God's standard is perfection (Matt. 5:48), yet he recognizes and makes allowances for our failures. That's why in Exodus 20 God gave his people 10 commands, AND an alter. In the new covenant he gives us wonderful instructions for parenting, AND the grace of his forgiveness. We are not likely to be perfect parents, but with our best efforts and his loving grace we can be good enough.

SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE!!

On Sunday evening, August 29, at 5:30 p.m., we will be having a special worship assembly. All of our LIFE GROUPS are requested to be in attendance as well as anyone who is not currently a member of a particular LIFE GROUP. The groups have been a blessing to so many, but we would like to bring them all together on the fifth Sunday of a month for a common encouragement and worship experience.
