SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

We have seen in recent years a return to a more experiential knowledge of God. Traditionally, the churches of Christ have been known more as a people of the book. Much of our emphasis has been on what the Bible says and not on what a person feels. Frank Mead, in his handbook of churches in the Untied States says, "There is a distinctive plea for unity at the heart of the Churches of Christ - a unity that is Bible based. It is believed that the Bible is the "beginning place" in and through which God-fearing people can achieve spiritual oneness; it is an appeal to "speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where the Bible is silent" in all matters pertaining to faith and morals; consequently, members recognize no other written creed or confession of faith than the Scriptures. In all religious matters, there must be a "thus sayeth the Lord." (page 107). This is an "outsider" writing his observations based on his research. This is certainly as true today as it ever has been. We need to be a people of the book who seek to follow everything God says. God has not spoken on every individual matter, but He has left us with principles that can be applied to every area of our lives. Still the Bible speaks of an experiential relationship as well. It is very possible to have the head knowledge but not be relational. Jesus said, the greatest commandment involves a heart matter, that of loving God and each other (Matthew 22:37). Jeremiah 9:23-24 states, "This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD , who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD." Experience is good and even vital, but it must be based on accurate knowledge. A knowledge of God included both the head and the heart. You can not have a right relationship with only one of these ingredients. We will discuss the matter of feelings in more detail next week.

Have a great week as you live for Him!

'I can do everything through him who gives me strength.'
-Philippians 4:13

Shepherd's Corner

Praise God for the recent baptisms and rededications to the Lord. The growth of God's Kingdom is exciting. And as a church family, all of us at Dalton need to love one another and encourage each other to share the Gospel. The Lord has entrusted us with the greatest message of all. Let's not be selfish and keep salvation to ourselves. The good news of Jesus is for all people.

Learn To Walk With God

It isn't difficult, especially in the beautiful Northwest, to see the awesome handiwork of God. But even though the beauty of his creative genius surrounds us, it also is not difficult to see the messes mankind has made over the centuries. As we have believed that we become more and more intelligent, we have put our confidence in human reason which continually falls far short of the direction given by our Father. The only way out of this mess is to turn back to God and learn to truly walk with him.

We begin by believing in him, and that he is still speaking to us....that we are not left to our own direction. God wants us to listen to him and be guided by him. Walking with God is a way of life. It is something to be learned, and it takes practice. This is made easier when we get alongside others who are striving to walk with God. Jesus said that his road was narrow and only a few will find it. So often we need the help and correction and assurance of others to keep us on the way. Jesus knew this, and died that his body, the church, might be established. In it we share the joys and trials of walking with God.

Reading the incredible examples of those biblical characters who walked with God down through the ages is always inspiring, and no doubt, the purpose for its writing. The Bible is overwhelmingly a book of stories -- tales of men and women who walked with God....or failed to walk with him. We find there the testimony of God's friends on what it means to walk with him through a thousand different episodes of life....episodes of joy, of anger, of love, or of sin. They tell us, 'Here is someone who knew God, who really knew him.' Some of those stories are quite detailed, but none is briefer or more intriguing than the short account of Enoch which simply says, 'Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him .'

Reeves Togo Trip Update

Hello! We've been to two villages to help David study with the Kabiye. Amazing! Yesterday we drove..... more ROUGHER roads......10 hours to a huge game reserve for a real African Safari. It was quite an experience. We saw all kinds of animals, including some African Elephants close up and personal. It was so much fun, especially the animals. Tomorrow we are having ladies prayer time with all the ladies and Mike will meet with the guys. We are having a blessing baby shower for Andrea Miller in the morning as she leaves Sunday for Lome to give birth to their third child. We have been to Bible studies and worship in three different villages. VERY different, to say the least. The people are so friendly....at least they smile and try to greet us. Our luggage has been found and is waiting in Accra for us to pick it up. Bryan Reis is getting it on Monday when he takes all the summer interns there to catch their plane home. We will have our clothes on Tuesday!!! Mike, Earlene and girls
