SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

We had a great response to our summer barbecue last week. The weather was great and the fellowship was very encouraging. We had many of our VBS children and their parents also attend. A special thank you to all who came out and visited parents and delivered bread and information to our guests. Also, we appreciate all who brought food, cooked, and cleaned up afterward. We are planning another barbecue August 25. Make sure you will be here. It is a great way to introduce your friends and neighbors to your church family.

As most of you know, the Dalton Gardens congregation is laying the foundation for a possible church plant in the area. No immediate time frame has been set for this, but we are going ahead in getting interest, formulating possible team members, and doing some more research on the best way to go about this. If you would be interested, be sure to let LaMont Petersen, Rick ˜ Blanchard, or Arrty Rude know. They make up part of the Church plant action group.

Let's ask the question, "Is starting another congregation a good idea?' We know several factors. First, the Great Commission set forth by Jesus asks us to spread the gospel to as many people as possible. We have the core of the message intact and unchangeable. As far as methodology, Jesus has left that up to us. Whatever accomplishes the mission the best is what we should be doing. Secondly, Kootenai County, percentage wise, is the fastest growing county in Idaho. Can Kootenai County be serviced by us effectively as we are doing now? Are there areas of the county that are showing a great population increase where its residents are not likely to drive to Dalton Gardens? If this is true, we need to give that area some greater concentration. Thirdly, can our church right now devote the resources to making a new church succeed? Most churches who have launched out in faith with adequate planning have experienced growth themselves. In fact, churches that plant other churches have often grown back and beyond where they were before the church plant. It is always an emotional time for everyone involved. Part of real growth involves change. We have a tendency to like the way things already are. We get used to it and can be uncomfortable with anything that breaks the status quo. A good way to look at this is to see how much God has blessed us and wants to share those same £blessings with as many others as we can. The timing has to be right, and we need to bathe the entire process in prayer. Ivan Archer suggested in my LIFE group that instead of asking God to bless what we are doing to try asking God to help us do the things He is blessing. That is good food for thought.

Have a great week as you live for Him!

We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.  -Colossians 1:28-29

Camp Prince's Pine

Senior Camp starts next Sunday. If you are going, be sure that your ride is coordinated as a bus is not taking campers to the site this year. There are still some slots open for more campers even though the preregistration deadline has passed.

The Junior Camp preregistration deadline is today. If you have not turned in your form, you may turn them in to the office. The Preteen deadline for preregistration is next Sunday, August 1.

There will be craft bingo, snacks, fellowship and lots of fun! If you're not a crafter, come and learn something new. Join us for all or part of this fun-filled (and productive) day. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL .... was finished a week ago. All those adults and teens who served in any way are much appreciated. It was a good time, and now some breathe a sigh of relief, but I discovered a clipping from an old Christian Chronicle that I felt I should share before we let VBS 2004 fade from our thoughts.

'I Remember... or Why We Have VBS' by Darrel Tippens

In the small western Oklahoma town where I grew up, missing Vacation Bible School was a tragedy that took a whole summer to recover from. Fortunately, I usually did not miss the Big Event. I can still remember the cold strawberry Kool Aid, and the homemade cookies. I remember the shining faces, the happy crowds, and the boisterous songs. I especially relished 'performing' on the very spot occupied by the preacher on Sunday mornings. It was a glorious, unforgettable time.

To be honest, I do not remember the specific Bible lessons at all. I do not recall which scriptures I memorized those summer days. But I do remember coming to know Jesus better. He became a personal presence to me, a friend who loved me. I still remember the kind ladies who taught me. Jesus truly lived in them. Though I may not have verbalized it, I thought, 'This is great! I want to come back.' And I always did.

Now 30 years have passed. Recently, while digging through some old mementos, I uncovered some old VBS attendance certificates along with a time-worn photo of my 2nd grade class.

My certificate of recognition dated June 3, 1955, has these words on it, 'And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.... Continue in the things which you have learned.' It is signed by my teachers. I wondered as I looked over these items, 'Did they know back in 1955 that their efforts would be lasting?'

Many things have changed over the years, but not the essential values of Vacation Bible School. Children still look into the faces of faithful teachers who simply share the love of Jesus. They will never forget.

Reeves Togo Trip Update

Hello to all. Yes, we did finally make it to Togo and all is well. The trip over was a little crazy, but God is always faithful.' The 10 hour drive down from Accra, Ghana to Kara, Togo was about the hardest part of the trip. We haven't seen any of our luggage or stuff yet. We think it went to Ethiopia, even though they changed us to British Airlines when we left Newark. We hope they will call us in a day or two and then we will drive back up to Accra to retrieve it. We each have our carry-on stuff so we'll get by.

This afternoon we all went with David to one of the villages where he taught a group of about 10 adults and 10 kids. It was a neat experience. We will be going to another village tomorrow.

It hasn't been terribly hot here yet, but the humidity is something else. We will write more later.

Love to all in Christ,
Mike, Earlene, Bobbie, Ashlin & Joleen
