Family News July 18, 2004 SHORT BY This year's Vacation Bible School is over. We appreciate all of the teachers, and other staff workers who worked so diligently to make this year's VBS so special. While the actual week is over there is still a great deal of work to be done that we could use your help with. We would like your support in encouraging the VBS families to consider making the Dalton Gardens church their church home. This requires a group effort. First, we need some extra bread baked so that we can deliver it as a welcoming gift to all of the families. We would like to have forty-five loaves of sweet bread to deliver to the VBS families. You may bring those in to the church office on Monday or Tuesday. Several ladies already baked bread for our weekly soul-winning and visitation. We simply need some extras for this week. We also need some extra men and ladies to help with the delivery of the bread and to provide information about the church. These are short visits simply to let the families know how much we appreciated them sending their children to VBS and give them the opportunity to learn more about the Dalton church. If you are able to help with either one of these opportunities, let Dave Shaner know today. We need to start on these by tomorrow. Also we have invited the VBS parents to our barbecue this Wednesday evening. First, we would like to encourage your presence this Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm. This is one more opportunity for us to get to know some of our guests better. See the accompanying article regarding the barbecue. Last week we talked about areas in which we could improve. We have also discussed the concept of changing our methods so that we can fulfill the Great Commission better. Is it possible that we have become very comfortable with the status quo, that evangelism is not the priority that it should be? It has been great to see 4 young people baptized into Christ the last two weeks. The teenagers have been setting a good example for the rest of the church about the need to bring others to Christ. When it comes to change, we can make all the outward changes we want, but real change starts within me. Let's ask God to open our hearts for those who do not know our Savior. Have a Great Week! See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. - Colossians 2:8
LADIES, THIS IS THE WEEK!!! Our special brown bag luncheon is this Wednesday, July 21 at 12 noon at the home of Jean Grow, 5905 Pleasant Way, (off Dalton between 95 and Ramsey, phone 664-3522). Please plan on attending and spending this time in fellowship with your sisters. Jennifer Rude will present a short devotional. Bring your favorite brown bag lunch, drinks will be provided. See you there! Wednesday Night Devotional & Barbecue We will be having a barbecue and devotional this Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 pm. We have invited our Vacation Bible School families to join us. The church will be providing t he hamburgers and hotdogs. We would like to ask you to bring any kind of side dish, chips, or desert of your choosing. If you are a member of a LIFE group, be sure to see you LIFE group leader for suggestions on what to bring. We will still be having our Soup Kitchen at the regular time. Thus, we need some to bring their items by 4:30 pm so that all of our guests can have something to eat. Gospel Meeting The Pinehurst Church of Christ is having a Gospel meeting on July 21-25. Wednesday - Saturday will start at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. All are invited to attend. The speaker will be, Rolland McLean. He has been a missionary in Kenya, a preacher at several churches in Texas and is now a counselor in San Angelo, Texas. Seniors - Seniors - Seniors Senior Saints are invited to the Fredrikson's home on Saturday, July 24. You are welcome to come from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to enjoy the day. Potluck dinner will be at 5:00 p.m. Please sign up at the kiosk to bring either a casserole, salad, or dessert to share. Maps can also be found at the kiosk. Come Hiking With Us We are planning on leaving on Sunday, July 25 right after church. Trip time will be 4-5 days. Distance of hike: about 30 miles. Number of lakes visited: 8-9. Fishing is memorable. This is the Mallard-Larkin Pioneer area. It is the divide between the St. Joe and the Clearwater drainage. For more information, please see Don Flanagan or Dave Hopkins. Shepherd's Corner THE CHALLENGE IS GREAT! Flavil Yeakley said, 'We have the man power, we have the brain power, we have the financial power; we have the communication power; and what is most important, we have the gospel power, ALL THAT WE LACK IS THE WILL POWER.' Brother Yeakley asks, 'But are we really prepared for such growth? Do we really want it? The more that I have studied patterns of congregation growth in recent years, the more I have become convinced that many of our congregations do not want to grow. Many elders, preachers, and members want to keep things the way they are: small.' 'The growing church of the future will call for a greater commitment of our time, money, and effort than we have ever dreamed of before. Those who are 'at ease in Zion' will resist growth because of this. But we can go on in spite of those who resist growth. We can preach the gospel of Christ to every person in our generation...Will we meet the great challenge which the Lord has set before us? IT IS FOR YOU TO DECIDE.' Let us also at Dalton get on fire for establishing a sister congregation. I would like to express a hope and make an appeal. First, I would like to express my own confidence in the future. As someone has said, 'Christ is the last, best hope of mankind.' Our world and community needs the Gospel! Without Christ our homes go to pieces and our personal lives become confused, empty and despairing. Without Christ society is doomed. WITH CHRIST THERE IS HOPE, OPTIMISM AND JOY. THERE IS PURPOSE IN LIFE. 'LET US GROW UNTO THE MEASURE AND STATURE OF CHRIST' AND LET US LAUNCH OUT INTO A DEEPER FAITH BY SHARING THE GOSPEL WITH THE LOST. -From the Shepherds Bridal Shower Come fellowship and encourage Jessica Bruner as she prepares for marriage. A Part of the Mission Togo Trip We (Mike & Earlene, Bobbie, Ashlin and Joleen) will leave tomorrow, July 19th, to visit David & Becky in Togo, Africa and to check up on this congregation's mission work there with the Kabiye people. I plan to bring back a first hand account of the Lord's work being done there by the Togo Team. We are so thankful for..... the opportunity to make this trip, for your encouragement and financial assistance, and for the big suitcases full of 'stuff' for the families there. Our journey is a long one, and I'm sure there will be some trials along the way. We covet your prayers for God's protection and guidance, and that we may all stay healthy. We will see you after we return on August 11th. I appreciate Scott Rouse for agreeing to teach the Teen Class while I'm gone. I also thank the Nirks, Shaners, and Wuests for hosting the teens' TNT .... Nirks July 22nd, Shaners - July 29th, and Wuests - on Friday, August 6th. And I appreciate those who will be in charge of the song leading, Mark Borsheim and Bob Clark, while I'm away. Thanks. God has often sent his preachers and prophets on mission trips. We learn of many in the Old Testament who were sent with special missions to perform, and the Apostle Paul is certainly a prime example in the New Testament. The book of Acts, and his own letters are filled with the accounts of his missionary travels. Paul himself often sent Timothy, Titus, and others with missions to perform or check on among the Christians of the first century. Reading about these works and the growth of the early church is exciting to all those who love the Lord. Seeing, and being a part of our current kingdom work is gratifying as well. Some great work is being done by our World Bible School teachers, by the funds we send to the orphanages in Russia, by Jerry Sisemore in and through the preacher training school in Barnaul, Siberia, by the Ric Duke and Jim Rude families in Bonners Ferry, ID and Astoria, OR., and by David & Becky Reeves and the team in Togo, Africa. Also Ivan & Sally will be returning soon to Cape Town, South Africa to assist in the Lord's work there. Hearing comments about some of those works last Wednesday night was special. It is great to be a part of a congregation who recognizes the need for sharing the gospel message both here and abroad. I look forward to a time in the near future when more than half of our budget goes directly into the mission field. As we all know, it was Jesus himself who said, 'Go into all the world and teach the gospel....' Let's each one find a way to be a part of the mission of Christ.
