SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

This last week I have been in Memphis, TN at the Harding Graduate School taking a course on New Testament Introductions, a course dealing with the occasions of the New Testament books. It has been enjoyable (ask me again after the final). This week, I am taking a course on counseling. I appreciate all of the prayers on my behalf while I have been away. Many of these classes have challenged long held assumptions concerning the scriptures. It has been very enjoyable but changing our viewpoints is not always easy.

Change is a word that scares many brothers and sisters in Christ. Yet that is what our entire Christian lives are to be all about. We are to be changed from one degree of glory to another as we grow and mature in Christ. Our LIFE Groups this week will discuss changes that need to take place within our lives and the overall health of the church. We are not talking about changing the message of the scriptures. We are talking about how we need to adapt to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. As Jeff Walling pointed out in the Bible class this morning, we are simply pitchers or clay pots into whom God has placed a priceless possession, His truth. We must be careful not to mistake the container for the contents. Many of our programs and methods are simply vehicles for communicating God's truth. Sometimes these vessels need to change in order to do a better job. God has asked us to take the gospel to the world. How we take it requires that we use some wisdom about what is most appropriate in order to accomplish His message in the best way. Unfortunately, many have confused the message with the container. The container must change in every generation but God's truth must not.

We get very used to doing things in the same ways, whether it be the way we dress at church to the layout of our assemblies to how the church spends its money. Any time we change, we are messing with our psyche because we get used to doing the same old things in the same old ways often not achieving God's desired results because the world has changed around us. Therefore we must continually ask how we can change our methods in order to better accomplish the Great Commission. Don't be afraid of it. Embrace it. But always be sure you are standing on the truths and principles of God's eternal Word, something that never changes!

Have a Great Week!!

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you - even Jesus.  -Acts 3:19-20

Happy Father's Day
God Bless you!

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun
and the calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of the night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities and when there was nothing more to add He knew His masterpiece was complete and so, He called it 'DAD'.

Special Bible Class

Be sure to attend your LIFE Groups this week. They will involve a discussion of the video presentation that we saw in Bible class this morning. Some of Jeff Walling's challenges should create some good group sharing.

Shepherd's Corner

'Count your blessings, name them one by one...' In your busy life do you stop, and count your blessings? In Psalm 127:5 we read, 'Blessed is a man whose quiver is full of arrows (children vs. 4). As a father I know children create surprises and struggles in life, but they are truly a blessing for fathers.
I do not mean to imply that children are only a blessing for fathers, nor are they our only blessing. But on this Father's Day, as you enjoy your cards and gifts, be sure to count your blessing.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

Thank you so very much for your prayers over the last few months. I have Guillain Barre and the recovery is long term so please continue to keep me in your prayers. My recovery thus far has been, to me, spectacular and could only be of God's doing! Ps. 118:28-29

Mike's Memos.....

A Level Of Expectancy

Everyone has a level of expectancy....maybe more than one. There is always the one that is your own. However, you were not born with it. You learned it from somebody, somewhere.....probably, initially from your parents (that's another one), and then those varying levels of expectancy from all the other people you interact with. Sometimes all those expectations become a jumble of frustration because of the inconsistencies. Kids as well as adults struggle with trying to live up to the expectations of others. This can drive a feller bonkers!  It seems that the result is a constant lowering of expectations. We really want to have it our own way. It's like anything else. We are given a choice. Where will we turn for the absolute guidelines on which to build our lives' expectations? As Christians, we must allow Christ rather than self or others to set the level of expectation for our lives. That's easy to say, but not so easy to do.

Some of us can be so thankful that it was that standard of expectations that our parents taught us, and they set that groundwork so firmly that we don't have to struggle with it. We know where we stand. So many decisions are easily made because we understand that the expectation is God's, and we don't question it. If you were not so fortunate, then you must build your own, centered on the love and teachings of Christ. No other standard will do.

We recognize that we must constantly test our expectancy level against the scriptures, and adjust any which have missed the mark, and we must avoid, at all cost, allowing the world, and especially our own selfishness, to tempt us to lower the standard.

Music Camp begins today!! About 80 of us - teens, counselors, teachers - will spend the week at Camp Prince's Pine praising God, and learning how to do that better. Along with that good time, we will do lots of other fun and games stuff. Worship time is every night at 7:00 p.m. Visitors are always welcome at that time. But especially on Friday night, we'd like to have you visit us for our end of the week program. You will be impressed, and enjoy what the kids have learned. The program will start about 7:45 p.m.

Please Note: If you feel you might have misplaced any of your dishes from past potlucks or events, please check on the kiosk in the foyer. Thanks!
