Family News May 23, 2004 SHORT
BY Years ago I heard the phrase, "Jesus turns me on. The church turns me off." I think I can somewhat understand what the speaker was saying. He was indicating that he liked the person of Jesus and what Christianity stands for, but he didn't like the hypocrisy he saw in so many different churches. That same thought is echoed by many today in different ways. You have likely heard people say that "I don't have to go to church to be a good Christian." I wonder if people really understand the full implication of what they are saying. After all, what is the church? It is the family of God. When we make statements such as the above, we also need to take a look inward. What is a hypocrite? It is one who doesn't live up to what he believes. It is one who doesn't practice what he preaches. Some of Jesus' strongest words were directed toward the hypocrite. In Jesus' day, many of the Pharisees and Seduces, in particular, took great stock in their position. Their religion was a sham. He condemned their actions. Jesus, in response to their actions admonished believers to do what they say but not what they do - Matthew 23:3. Many times we allow others' irresponsibility to keep us from doing what we should. In a way, they are controlling our actions! Someone may say, well I don't go to church because of a particular person. Or I don't like the preacher, or an elder, or decisions that have been made, etc. We need to remember that God has accepted each of us, warts and all. I am amazed at the makeup of the Corinthian church - they had cliques, gossip, immorality, favoritism, severe doctrinal errors (some didn't even believe the resurrection!), and displayed a lack of love. I don't know too many churches that would accept them as a part of their fellowship. Yet the apostle Paul still saw them as the church of God which was in Corinth. I am amazed at the forbearance and love of God toward his people. Until Jesus comes again and puts an end to this current earthly system, the church will never be perfect in practice. We must learn to love one another more deeply everyday. We must learn to trust in God despite all that is wrong even in the world. The church of Christ is the family of God. You can not have God without having his family. They go together. Have a Great Week !!! Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' -Matthew 22:37
SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE!! Next Sunday evening, May 30, at 5:30 p.m., we will be having a special worship assembly. All of our LIFE GROUPS are requested to be in attendance as well as anyone who is not currently a member of a particular LIFE GROUP. The groups have been a blessing to so many, but we would like to bring them all together on the fifth Sunday of a month for a common encouragement and worship experience. We realize that many will be out of town for Memorial Day, but your presence would be very encouraging. POTLUCK DINNER: A potluck meal starting at 5 p.m. will precede the Life Group meeting and study tonight at the home of Lynn and Warren Brown. Anyone with an appetite for food, fellowship and learning is invited. Please bring a side dish or dessert. Call 772-9556 for directions. VBS Teacher Meeting All VBS teachers please come to a planning meeting on Wednesday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m. You can plan on getting dinner at the Soup Kitchen and eating your dinner during the meeting. We will meet in room #3. Family Camp - May 28-31 This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to spend time together in the beautiful outdoor setting of Camp Prince's Pine on Lake Thomas. Christian families from all over the Northwest will enjoy a weekend of fellowship and fun. John Ives of the Valley congregation in Spokane is the director and needs to hear from you if you plan to go. Registration forms are on the kiosk in the lobby. Levi Sisemore will be coming May 29th to work and worship with us as our summer Youth Intern once again. I know we will all be glad to see Levi, as he so easily becomes a part of the church family at Dalton Gardens. He has completed his first year at Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock, Texas. He is scheduled to lead our singing next Sunday! Shepherd's Corner The Elders have been in close contact with the Church Plant Steering Committee and are glad that they have decided to do the survey. The survey will give us an opportunity to review how the congregation feels about the church plant. It would be really helpful if every member would complete the survey so we can get a true feel for this ministry. I wish to thank Rick and Janet Blanchard, Arrty and Jennifer Rude and LaMont and Mary Petersen for working on this committee. Also for the input of Ivan Archer. Please give this member a pat on the back for their efforts. -For the Elders Dave Ramsey Work Shop As of this writing there are less than 300 seats left. Over 2,000 have already
registered. If you would like to get a ticket please call 1-888-227-3213.
Congratulations ...... Vanessa Borsheim, a member of the Coeur d'Alene High School 5A state Golf tournament, and Scott Simpson, a member of the varsity district tennis team. THE BLIND WOMAN'S MITE A poor blind woman in Paris, France put 27 francs in the collection plate. 'You can't afford that much,' a friend advised. 'Oh yes I can,' she said. 'I am blind, so I asked my fellow straw workers how much they spent for oil for their lamps, and they said, '27 francs a week.' So, I put all I save by not needing a light , being blind, and it is used to take light to those in darkness. If we all had this attitude in our giving, and in our desire to share the gospel with the lost, can you imagine what a difference it would make?! YOUTH GROUP EVENTS Weekly events include: Up-coming special events include: Malachi 3:3 This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him
at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. "She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The silversmith answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy. When I see my image in it." C.C.S CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Each school has its own unique culture. A small school will look and function differently from a large school. An inner city school will look dramatically different from a rural or suburban school. Elementary is different from secondary; private is different from public. Where the differences lie are not just in the structures themselves, but in the values and beliefs of the inhabitants. Look deep into a school, and you can see what is cherished. Walk the halls, and you will see what they value. Walk into a school that looks sterile with white blank walls, no signage, and
complete silence, and you will feel like you have walked into a hospital. This
school's leaders believe that students are there to be cured by their teaching. Walk the halls of Coeur d'Alene Christian School you will see a special place where God is honored, Jesus is taught, and each child is cherished. What a blessing it is to call this school our own. I hope you have a great week! Love, Lynelle Dehlbom Donations Needed We are needing refrigerator boxes for VBS. Please give them to Alyssa Frahm or Michelle Kish. Also, a big microwave is needed for the kitchen, a vacuum cleaner and a TV. These items donated would be greatly appreciated. BIBLE BUILDERS MEMORY VERSES Children's Sunday A.M.
