SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

I am very excited about the selection of our new deacons and elders. Several have asked about the selection process for leaders of the Dalton Gardens church. We have always liked to pattern as much as we are able after the New Testament. We are given criteria for the type of men to be selected in both I Timothy and Titus. Timothy was dealing with a situation where they already had elders and deacons. Titus was told to appoint elders in every city in Crete where there was a church. We do find from Acts 6 that there was a difference between the selection and the appointment. There the apostles asked the congregation to select men that they, the apostles, may appoint to a certain task that was needing to be done. We are not told how the church decided on their recommendations. We can assume that the church in some way reached a consensus and gave their recommendations to the apostles who commissioned them into service. A customary practice in the first century church involved the laying on of hands placing them into service. This was simply a formal commissioning and recognition by the church of their position. It is asking for God's blessings on the person.

The Dalton church received your suggestions for who you would like to be your leaders for the next two years. This was given to a committee who interviewed the prospective candidates. They then made their recommendations back to the church for final approval. Some have asked, 'Why two years?' First we need to recognize that there is nothing in scripture that suggests that once you are an elder or deacon then that position is for life. We can infer that if it takes the congregation's approval in the first place, then it should continue to have it. Two years gives a man the opportunity to immerse himself in the work, but it also gives him an 'out' if he finds that he needs to serve in a different capacity. It also gives the congregation an opportunity to select new and different men whom God raises up to serve the good of the body. We do not have a fool proof method. It will likely be tweaked along the way. But I am very thankful for the spirit of both the church body and the men selected. A special thank you to the selection committee of Ivan Archer, Mike Swaim, Cheryl Mullaly, LeeAnn Freshour, and Russ Allen. Be sure to keep our new elders and deacons in your prayers continually as we serve God and His church.

Have a Great Week!

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body Christ may be built up.  - Ephesians 5:11-12

Family Camp - May 28-31

This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to spend time together in the beautiful outdoor setting of Camp Prince's Pine on Lake Thomas. Christian families from all over the Northwest will enjoy a weekend of fellowship and fun. John Ives of the Valley congregation in Spokane is the director and needs to hear from you if you plan to go. Registration forms are available in the lobby

Shepherd's Corner

As we honor the installation of new Elders and Deacons today, I pray that you will support these men during the next two years. The scriptures tell us to make their job a joy. It becomes a difficult time if you are constantly asking for help in the ministries, but only get refusals. It is each one of our responsibilities to work for the kingdom. How will we be able to face judgment day if all we ever did was have an excuse for every time we were asked to help or serve. The Elders pray all the time that each member of the congregation will become involved in a Life Group and serve in one of the ministries. May God bless us as we move forward this next two years. -For the Elders

LIFE Groups

On Sunday, May 30 at 5:30 pm, we will be having an evening worship assembly. All of our LIFE Groups will be meeting here instead of their normal meeting times. We will be doing this whenever there is a 5th Sunday in a given month. This gives our leaders a break plus allows us to get together to learn new songs, pray together, and enjoy each other's fellowship.

Who Is Jesus...Really?

When Jesus asked the disciples, 'Who do men say that I am?' Peter responded, 'You are the Christ, the Son of God.' And that was the truth, but it is doubtful that Peter understood what he had said. At the end, when the mob came to arrest the Master, Jesus asked them, 'Whom do you seek?' One of the officials responded, 'Jesus of Nazareth.' Perhaps that's all he knew. Or maybe that's all he wanted to know. Jesus' three word, five letter response added, oh so much more. He said, 'I am he.' His statement pierced his enemies with terror. In that simple statement Jesus confronted his attackers with everything they needed to know about the person standing before them. His answer was the same one Moses had received at the burning bush so many years before when God said, 'I AM.' The Jewish leaders had come in their arrogance to arrest Jesus of Nazareth. Instead they found the great I AM, the absolute and supreme authority of life. John 18:6 tells us that they were so terrorized 'they drew back and fell to the ground.' ....a pathetic heap of humanity before the God of all creation who held the power of life and death.

A question for you: Do you come seeking Jesus of Nazareth, or are you really looking for, needing, desiring The Great I AM?

Donations Needed

We are needing refrigerator boxes for VBS. Please give them to Alyssa Frahm or Michelle Kish. Also, a big microwave is needed for the kitchen and there is a need for another vacuum cleaner. These items donated would be greatly appreciated.

C.C.S CORNER SCHOOL NEWS

Love Passage for Kids

If I can speak beautifully and can sing like an angel, but don't love others, I sound like a child banging on a piano or a screeching radio.

If I'm very smart, almost genius, if I can figure out the hardest math problems and understand sentence diagrams, but don't love others, I am nothing.

Love will stand in line and wait its turn.

Love looks for the good in others.

Love doesn't always want what others have, and it doesn't brag about what it does have.

Love is polite, even when the other person is rude.

Love doesn't always have to be first.

Love doesn't get angry over the small things, and it doesn't remember one reason after another to be hurt.

Love isn't happy when someone else fails but is happy with the truth.

Love will always protect others, especially those who are often picked on or teased.

Love always believes the best about others and is steady and true.

Love never gives up. Preaching will stop someday. So will speeches. Knowledge will come to an end. Today we only know part of what there is to know. We can preach and speak only with a small part of understanding, but when perfection comes then what is imperfect will go away.

I am now young, and so I talk and think and speak like a child. When I become an adult I will put childish ways behind me. Now we see only a poor reflection, like in a mirror; then we will see face to face. Now I only know part of what there is to know; then I will know fully and will be fully known.

The three most important things to have are faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13
