Family News April 25, 2004 SHORT
BY Sometimes, people will come to me for advice on their marriage. Without being flippant, I usually know the problems before they walk through my door. How do I know? Because most marriages struggle with a lot of the same basic problems. One of those is communication. A close second would be finances. In fact, one of the leading causes for marriage failures can often be attributed to improper handling of finances. Wouldn't it be great to be able to be out of debt and to be a better steward of the resources that God has given us? Do you realize that nearly 1/3 of the parables of Christ have to do with handling our material blessings. At the same time, I know of very few things that will drain you spiritually more than not having a good handle on your finances. We would like to encourage you to attend The Total Money Makeover. It is a seminar by Dave Ramsey on May 25 at the Spokane Opera House from 5:30-10 pm. For those unfamiliar with Dave Ramsey, he is the popular radio host of ... 'The Dave Ramsey Show.' He can be heard Monday through Friday on AM 1510 from 11-2 p.m. He gives very practical advice on how to get out of debt, how to live on cash, how to give to the church, and be a blessing to others. The seminar will be very active, humorous, and insightful. The cost to attend the live event is $25 per person. However, the cost is only $19 if you register by this Friday. The church is planning on purchasing some tickets at this price. If you would like to go, please notify the office by this Friday at noon, and we will be sure that some are reserved for you. You may always buy tickets at the door, if seats are available, at the increased price. As a plus, if we have 30 in attendance from this church, we will receive the 13 lesson course, Financial Peace University leaders kit for free. Preachers often do not like preaching on money. But Jesus spent a lot of time on it. He said you cannot serve God and money. Too many people make money their god. Remember money is simply a commodity. It can be used for good or evil, but it has the power to captivate you and take over your life. It also has the power to do a lot of good. What if you were debt free and were able to use more of your resources for building up the kingdom of God? It would be a great blessing for you and others. Have a Great Week! For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the
Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with
bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

THE 61st ANNUAL PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY As we near the 61st Annual Pepperdine University Bible Lectures, we solicit your daily prayers for God's work in those who will lead and participate in this year's program. Each year, our work is rewarded by letters that recount blessings received as a result of the Bible Lectures. We credit these blessings to God's honoring of prayers. We ask that, this year, you contribute your prayers toward the people and churches that will be affected by God's work in Malibu, May 4 -7. Please join us for an inspirational week! Call Church Relations at (310) 506-4270 for a booklet, or visit www.pepperdine.edu/churchrelations. Lifeline of Hope Another group of orphans has been added to the Lifeline of Hope family and are in need of inoculations. We have been asked to donate an additional $500 by the end of May. The money collected at the Easter egg hunt will go to this cause. If any of you can help with this special cause please contact LeeAnn Freshour or indicate on your check 'Inoculations' on the memo line. Thank you. Shepherd's Corner The Bible is a gift from God and therefore true, complete, and authoritative. The men God chose to write the Bible were not left to give their own opinions or mere personal feelings about matters discussed in Scripture; they were fully guided along by the Holy Spirit so that every word they wrote was a God-breathed word. After revealing, confirming, and recording the saving truth that constitutes the Bible, God has seen to its preservation and dissemination through the ages. That process of preservation has been almost as great a miracle as the original production of Scripture. We can be confident that the Bibles we read today truly are God's word, and it is probably impossible for us to be as grateful as we should be for having it in our homes. Praise God for His saving word. -For the Elders African International Missions Roger Dickson reports contributions for the International Christian Press has raised funds to purchase 14 tons of the 20 tons of paper needed for printing. Cost is $1350 a ton, so he is praying that the rest of the $8100.00 will be raised by the time he gets back to So. Africa. Please note missions bulletin board for details of that work. Make your contribution by check to Dalton Gardens with notation for Africa Press. Family Camp - May 28-31 This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to spend time together in the beautiful outdoor setting of Camp Prince's Pine on Lake Thomas. Christian families from all over the Northwest will enjoy a weekend of fellowship and fun. John Ives of the Valley congregation in Spokane is the director and needs to hear from you if you plan to go. Registration forms are available in the lobby Camp Workday We love our Christian camp. Prince's Pines is a blessing to all of us. It requires upkeep and improvements. Please schedule time to help with these on May 7-8. Ask John Simpson for further information. Secret Sisters The secret sister bulletin board is getting pretty full! Be sure to check it for a message from someone who wants to write back to you. This is the only way for the person who you have to contact you. They may have a special prayer request that they would like to share with you. Also, please remember to contact your secret sister, once a week if you can. She is busy praying for her secret sister, as well as for whoever has her, and I'm sure we could all use the encouragement! Christians need each others' prayers. Even when there is no immediate crisis, those prayers refresh and sustain us. It has been a while since we divided the congregation into groups of 3 family units. Each family's role is to pray for the other families in their "TRIO" everyday. This way each group has 2 other families praying for them on a daily basis. Look for your new Prayer Trio assignments on May 2nd. Rejoice ever more. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. I Thess. 5:16-18 Mike's Memos..... Just one more note about LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR CHRIST 2003 - 04. Thank you, church family, for your attendance and positive support of our celebration program last Sunday night. I know we were all very proud of the accomplishments and spiritual growth of our kids. They were great. LTC is such an excellent training tool, and does so much to maintain spiritual focus, and develop the leadership skills in our young people that are so badly needed in the church. I pray fervently that God will remove every obstacle that stands in the way of any 3rd-12th grade student being a part of the program next year. Can you imagine how great it would be if every teen was involved, and truly committed to doing his/her very best in LTC, and we could avoid the struggles between those who are and those who are not in the program? What a dream! Help me pray about that dream. I have no doubt that we would certainly honor God with our unity and strength. There will be some changes next year. Instead of the Borsheim's, whom we will miss, I will be leading next year's LTC, and I welcome any suggestions for change. We've had a good program, but there's always room for improvement. I covet your prayers, and the involvement of all parents. If you are willing, there is a place for you to serve. Our Bible Bowl study will be the book of Luke, and the LTC theme for 2004-05 is 'Lost and Found'. I'm already excited. Please begin now to anticipate a great LTC this fall and next spring. And let's continue to encourage our kids as they use their skills to honor and praise God. Wednesday night, in place of our Bible Bowl study, we are beginning a series on: Jesus - 'The Sweetest Name I Know' It would be great if we could have 100% of our teens, 7th - 12th grades, involved in this study. There are all kinds of good reasons for living the Christian life, but the greatest motivation of all is our relationship to the Christ. When disciples were turning away from Jesus because of his hard teaching, he asked them, 'Will you also go away?' Peter replied, 'To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.' Although he probably didn't understand all that he was saying, he correctly surmised, there was nothing in the world he wanted more than he wanted Jesus. Jesus was his friend; that was enough. That is my desire for my life, for my family, and for the teens in this youth group. I pray we will find / magnify that awesome friendship during this Wednesday night study. C.C.S CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Believe it or not, there are only six weeks left of school. This year has been challenging for me and I look forward to summer, but I have to admit that I will miss each student in my class. (Don't tell them I said that!) This year's class is especially imaginative, artistic, active, and enthusiastic. They are great communicators and have a great sense of humor. Next week we will begin writing book reports. Each student chose a book several weeks ago. It was interesting to see how each student chose a book that matched his or her personality. They chose books mainly based on what is important to them.... horses, robots, airplanes. It made me wonder what book I would choose. What is most important to me today? Is it my family, my job, my Lord? The next step is to then read that book and to determine the main characters, setting, important parts and conclusion. If I were to choose the Bible, based on importance in my life, how would I answer these questions? Who was the main character, where did He live, what were the important parts of His life, and how does His story end? We know these answers, but the next part of the assignment is really what matters. The oral report. My students will share with the class about their books and tell why they would recommend it to others. Isn't that our assignment, too? To stand up and say, 'I've read this book and you should, too!' And if we follow the instructions and complete the assignment, we will, like my students, make the grade we so desire. - Jennifer Rude Thank Yous! Church thank you for all your support and good fellowship at the annual school auction Saturday! We appreciate your support of Coeur d'Alene Christian School. -Dan Dupey Thanks to all the children and adults who contributed money to Lifeline of Hope at the Easter egg hunt on April 10th. -LeeAnn Freshour Thanks for all your love and prayers. We are glad to be home. -Fred & Opal Bonney Ladies Scrapbooking Night! Are you still trying to get caught up on your scrapbook? You can always tell when you are on the road to righteousness - it's all uphill.
