SHORT  BY

STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Next week, the church starts a process of the selection and appointment of new elders and deacons. The Dalton church appoints its leaders every two years. We will discuss this more in the coming weeks, but you can start right now by praying for the church and the direction that God wants it to go. The congregation will rarely rise above the quality of its leaders.

We will have a lesson on elders and deacons on March 21. We have spent the last few weeks on conflict resolution. Remember that as long as there is a devil, he will insure that conflict arises even within brothers and sisters who love each other very much. It comes in families, at work, and in the church. We simply need some tools to learn how to deal with it in a Christian way. We have seen 3 methods for dealing with conflict: accommodation, collaboration, and compromise. Each of these has merit depending on the situation. Another method of dealing with conflict is that of avoidance. The avoider evades conflict and takes on a lose/win posture. On the surface, this appears negative, but there are occasions when this style is appropriate. This is good when the issue is deemed more trivial or more tangential, when others can deal with the conflict more effectively, or when time is short and a decision is not really necessary. Not every thing in life is a make it or break it issue!. But avoidance is inappropriate when both parties care about the issue and the relationship is important. It should not be used habitually for most issues, or if it will leave negative feelings lingering.

Jesus avoided confrontation in John 11:45-54, simply because the time was not appropriate. He waited until the time was right. We are also told to turn the other cheek which is a form of avoidance. This principle can apply to many contexts. Not all conflict involves anger. If anger is involved,, then we need to follow Ephesians 4:26 where we are instructed to not let the sun go down on our anger. In other words, we are to deal with it because waiting will not make things better.

Have a Great Week!!

'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.'
-John 7:37-38

Shepherds Corner

Bible study is a great blessing! The failure to recognize the great blessings in Bible study is the result of a failure to learn two important lessons: The Word of God can save our souls, and the Word of God is our guide to success and happiness in this world. James says RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE IMPLANTED WORD, WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOULS James 1:21.

Not only is the Bible a guide to temporal blessings, but also the only true guide to happiness as well. Paul exhorted 'Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say Rejoice' Phil. 4:4 The early Christians showed this joy in their lives despite their sufferings and persecutions. Do you want a guide to happiness? Turn to your Bible and study. Do you want your burdens lightened? Go to your Bible. Do you want the best principles of health? Find them in your Bible. Do you want to avoid personal conflicts or adjust to personal problems? Learn your Bible. Do you want to be the right kind of son or daughter, brother or sister, husband or wife, father or mother, teacher or student, employer or employee? STUDY YOUR BIBLE. Do you want to learn to love others and or want people to love you? Practice your Bible.

It is not a matter of how great a thing man may do, how much sacrifice he may make or how much he has suffered but rather how IMPLICITLY HE PUTS HIS TRUST IN GOD AND WITH HUMILITY HE ENTHRONES GOD IN HIS HEART, GIVING HIM THE COMPLETE RULE OVER HIS LIFE, DOING HONOR TO THE WISDOM OF GOD BY THE CARE WITH WHICH HE FOLLOWS HIS TEACHINGS FOUND IN THE WORD.

Mt. 28:18-20; Heb. 4:12.

What a Fellowship!

The Pepperdine Bible Lectures will come to a close on Friday evening, May 7. Rick Atchley will do the honors with his message, 'Take Hold of Life that is Truly Life.' You'll want to be there, not only for the challenging lecture, but also for the fellowship for the final song, the final prayer, the final embrace and good-bye. There's nothing quite like it. Even then, there's one more opportunity for late evening worship fellowships, and that final cup of coffee with friends. Call (310) 506-4270.

MIQVAH 2004

March 12th - 14th

When most of you read this, Miqvah 2004 will be history. Our theme, Hall of Unborn Destinies, was a good one, but very challenging. As we planned lessons we learned so much about God's special plans for us. We continue to pray that the lives of all the teens who came were enriched by the power and love of God.

Church Family, thank you for all you did to help make this a great weekend for so many young Christians and their friends. This church is a beautiful example of unity and Christian strength. When we pull together, and tap into the awesome power of our God, there is so much good that can be done. His Spirit has certainly been alive in our youth group in the preparation for Miqvah 2004.

Leadership Training For Christ

Our kids in LTC are doing some great work which I'd like to share with you over the next few weeks. This year's LTC theme is 'Stand Firm'. The following is Service Challenge Report by 12th grade student, Nathan Frisk.

Service Challenge is one of the more challenging of our LTC events. It causes one to step out of his 'comfort bubble' in order to serve others. Thus, the event is helpful to both those being served, and those doing the serving.

This year I chose to do service projects for some of the elderly in our community. This included: preparing for a church banquet in honor of our elderly members, singing in nursing homes, and visiting elderly church members in the hospital.

Most other projects were in service to our youth ministry. These included: chopping wood and preparing for a winter youth group retreat, teaching VBS classes for our younger children as well as for the kids in Tecate, Mexico, preparing lessons for a youth retreat, and volunteering many hours around the church... mostly doing youth work.

All of these were uplifting, but my favorite experience was helping prepare and deliver a food box to a struggling young mother and her children. We had gotten a call earlier saying she was having problems and needing help. My youth minister and I prepared the boxes and delivered them. This affected me more deeply because I saw the condition of the family, and was forced to be more thankful for all that God has blessed me with.

Obviously, Service Challenge benefits the community, and softens the heart of those serving.

Our group will be going to the LTC Convention in Phoenix in a few weeks. Each participant has to pay his/her own plane fare. Tickets were purchased this week at $276. If you can help any of these families, please see me soon.

CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS

Trust

My daughter, Jennifer, is always saying: 'If you worry, don't pray, or if you pray don't worry.' God is patient and faithful..... He wants us to put our lives in his hands. He has entrusted a few to do His work here at C.C.S. He has blessed us richly. We teach the children to do the very best they can and leave the outcome to God. So, we, must be the example, in prayer, studying God's word, and in all we do.

Students are using their time and energy to prepare for the Talent Show and Science Fair! Georgette Rude has spent many hours with grades 3-8 as well as organizing fine details of the Talent Show. It is fun to see what the students have accomplished. Join us Tuesday evening.
