SHORT  BY

STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Over the last few weeks, we have looked at conflict and have proposed several methods of dealing with it. As long as there is a devil, he will do what he can to drive wedges between brethren in Christ. We have seen the presence and resolution of conflict throughout the scriptures. It can be used to help us grow closer to God and each other if we will allow it to do so. It can also be destructive if we allow pride to manifest itself. Several principles have emerged thus far. Proverbs 27:17 states “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” We also saw the paradox “If you want to have less conflict in your relationships, try to have more.” In other words, the more you invite openness which includes disagreement into your life, the more likely you will be to resolve problems.

One method for resolving conflict was accommodation. The accommodator retains the relationship at all cost. He/she gives in more easily for the sake of the relationship. Abraham practiced this form of resolution in his dealings with Lot. Another method is collaboration. This form says that both the relationship and the issue are important. Collaboration involves a lot of time and energy, and is more risky. So as the saying goes, choose your battles wisely. Another form of resolution involves compromise. This is best when a win/win situation is not possible. This form is appropriate when cooperation is important but time and resources are limited. It is good when finding some solution, even less than the best , is better than a complete statement. Acts l5 is an example of compromise being successfully used. The Jews were concerned that the new Gentile converts had no respect for their law (customs). After much discussion, they reached a middle ground that both parties could live with. As a result, the Jews became more accepting and the Gentiles were careful not to be so blatantly offensive to the Jews. It was a good solution for them.

We may need to seek compromise at times as well. It is not a sign of weakness, but a method to help us solve problems and promote the gospel.

Have a Great Week!!

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

It’s No Time To Go To Bed!

Nights are alive with activities at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures—late night classes, exciting praise services, drama presentations, choral groups, and, of course, the ever-popular “Coffee and Pie in the Café.” As the sun sinks into the western sea, the sky deepens to cobalt, then to ebony. The campus takes on a new look with sparkling lights under a dark star-lit sky. May 4-7, 2004, is coming soon. The Bible Lectures have something planned for everyone, from early morning until late in the evening. For a beautiful booklet, call 310-506-4270 or email Whitney.Wall@pepperdine.edu

Getting to Know You Better

Two of your shepherds with the church here are meeting on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. with a different family each week in an effort to better meet your needs. They will be getting your input and offering ways in which you will be able to get involved in the work of the Lord’s church. So..... when you are called, welcome their invitation as they want to serve you. They are starting with the newer members, but if you would like to meet sooner, please contact the office.

Leadership Training For Christ

Our kids in LTC are doing some great work which I’d like to share with you over the next few weeks. This year’s LTC theme is “Stand Firm”. The following is a Radio Minute Message by 8th grade student, Brandi Welter.

Did you ever lose your mom in a grocery store when you were a little kid? Do you remember getting that panicky feeling when you’ve looked all around and you just can’t find her? Well, that’s how it feels when you get lost and can’t find God.....when you know he’s there, and you’re pretty sure he wouldn’t , and hasn’t left you alone in the world, but you just can’t find him. You know you’ll be lost forever if you don’t find him soon, but you’re just not sure how or where to look.

Well, if that’s the case, I know how you feel because I’ve been there, and I know for a fact that others have been in that same position as well. When you’ve lost God, or even when you do have him, it’s hard to stand firm in your faith against the world. Exodus 14:13d says, “Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” And Psalm 33:11 says, “But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart throughout all generations.” So remember, when you feel you have lost him, stand firm.

Our group will be going to the LTC Convention in Phoenix in a few week. Each participant has to buy his/her own plane ticket. If you can help any of these families, please see me soon.

News From Togo

The latest report from David and Becky Reeves shares the future addition of Brett and April Emerson to the Kabiye team. They are currently obtaining support and plan to join the team in 2005. The Emerson’s will add to the work force needed to guide the growing work. Currently there are fourteen small churches and four new ones expected to be born this weekend.

Currently David is working in the four villages of Kpindi, Kitogotaa, Limgao and Nyangbanda. The Christians are internalizing the things they are learning and their faith in Christ is growing every day. The Christians in Nyangbanda have built their first building are are very excited about evangelizing in their own community and beyond. They are also very eager to meet every Wednesday to learn from God’s word.

The team’s health is very good at this time. Continue to pray for God’s blessings.

Come join us for Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday mornings, at 6:30 a.m. at JB’s Restaurant on Appleway for prayer and encouragement!
