Family News February 8, 2004 SHORT
BY How do you handle conflict? God’s Word has many examples of Christians overcoming difficulties. Conflict comes in various forms. In our Wednesday night class on II Corinthians we saw that the apostle Paul had to deal with troubles from without and pressures from within - II Corinthians 7:5. Some conflict comes from within ourselves. Other forms come from close relationships, such as family, work, or church. Still others can come from those who are opposing your efforts from the outside. Conflicts are inevitable. Jesus had to deal with it. Paul had to deal with it. You have to deal with it. With conflict a given fact, the important element is not how to avoid it, but how to deal with it in a Christian manner. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers” not blessed are the trouble makers. Paul told the Romans, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everybody.” - Romans 12:17. People pursue peace and understanding in different ways. Some of them are appropriate; some can have long term consequences. In resolving differences it is important to first take a look at our own motives. We also have to be able to place ourselves in the other person’s shoes. We have a tendency to take one of four courses in resolving conflict. Sometimes we accommodate. This can be appropriate when the issues are more important to others than to yourself or when you find that you are wrong. Accommodation allows a person to be heard, and it shows your reasonableness. Accommodation is inappropriate when you are likely to harbor resentment or you are using it simply to gain acceptance. Some of you may remember Edith Bunker (from All in the Family) frequently used accommodation for this reason. There are several examples of accommodation in the scripture. Abraham allowed Lot to choose (Genesis 13). Paul had Timothy circumcised (Acts 16:1-4). Even God sometimes used accommodation. In I Samuel 8, He allowed the people to have a king even though it was clearly not what was best. Other measures of dealing with conflict include Collaboration, Compromising, Controlling, and Avoiding. Don’t let the terms throw you off. All have both pluses and minuses. I will deal with these more next week. In the meantime, let’s work for peace and mutual edification. Have a Great Week!!
Garden of PrayerThe Prayer Ministry is planning a dedication of the Garden of Prayer and Open House on August 22, 2004. Planning committees must be formed as soon as possible. We would appreciate everyone’s help in making this a memorable event that will not only glorify God, but encourage the use of the Garden. Please remember to return your form identifying the committee you would like to serve by February 15th to Janet Blanchard or Leeann Freshour. Additional forms are located on the kiosk. Rescue tickets can NOW be purchased in the school or church office or see Georgette Rude. The concert, a fundraiser for the Coeur d’Alene Christian School, is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2nd, 7:00 p.m. at NIC Schuler Auditorium. VBS Planning MeetingIt is time again to start planning this year’s Vacation Bible School. We need lots of help this year. Several of our usual teachers will not be available. fun! Shepherds CornerAs your shepherds we continually encourage you to keep prayer as a central point in your lives as found in 1 Thess. 5:17, “pray without ceasing.” We also ask and encourage you to pray for future events. One such event is that of the selecting and appointing elders and deacons. This is a process that God wants the church involved in. We encourage you to study and prayerfully meditate upon the scriptures about elders and deacons. Then we encourage you to pray some more as you look around you and select men who would serve the Lord in these capacities. Pray for this process, pray for these men, and pray that God will be glorified in this. Some scriptures to study and pray about: Acts 6:1-6; 1 Tim. 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-10. - For the Elders Ladies, Ladies, Ladies!!! Remember to mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 17th, at 6:30 p.m. for a fun time of sharing and fellowship at Joanna Wuest’s home. Ladies Fall Fellowship Our 13th Annual Ladies Fall Fellowship will be on Saturday, October 2, 2004. The theme is "Measure of Grace" and Lacreta Scott from Altadena, CA will be speaking. Bill & Jamie Wright, Katrina’s brother and sister-in law, gave birth to a baby boy, Seth. Keep Seth in your prayers as a muscle in his stomach strengthens so he can hold his food down. Pray for the quick healing for Kelly Dupey's finger, which was cut needing seven stitches. Adam Bristow, Mae Fultz’s 6 month old great grandson, is in the hospital in Colorado with a lung virus. He is having difficulty breathing. Pray for the Reeves and the Togo Team as they continue to fulfill the Lord’s work with the Kabiye people in Togo, Africa. At this time of year they are dealing with the dry season’s desert winds which fill their homes with dust. But it is a good season for teaching because there are no crops and the people are idle. Continue to remember: Harold Long, the families in Tecate, Mexico, Dave Shaner, Sr., George Parrish, Tammy Heath, Chris Williams, Red Caylor, James Rude & Family, Shirley Lindell, Barbra D. pain that’s all over now. She will be missed by all who loved her, but never
forgotten. Thank you for your prayers for my daughter, Donann Scott.
She is healing and is doing much better. You will find your 2003 yearly contribution slip in your
mailbox. Mike’s Memos..... Sunday AM Teen / Parent Class ______________________________ Bible Bowl Challenge _______________________ MIQVAH 2004 Yes, it is only five weeks until we will be hosting all the Northwest teens...some 150 of them, for our youth rally weekend. It is always a very busy, challenging, exciting time for this congregation. It is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to live what we preach. Please be praying for our Youth Group as we make all the necessary preparations for classes, devotionals, activities, decorations, etc. Pray for all the teens from surrounding areas to come with hearts prepared to receive God’s word, and pray for this church family as we prepare to open our homes and our hearts to so many young guests. We will need about 30 host homes! Please be willing to serve in this way. A sign-up sheet will be on the Kiosk in a couple of weeks. _____________________________________ Use It Or Lose It Everyone realizes that regular good physical workouts will build a stronger body. The same is said to be true with our mental powers. It is a small stretch to understand that exercise is also necessary for spiritual strengths. When I do not make time for Bible study and prayer in my daily routine, I will experience a decline in my spiritual life and a spiritual softness which makes me an easy target for Satan. I am not as sensitive to spiritual things, I react differently to worldly things. But when I exercise my spirit with Godly themes, I see His handiwork more clearly, and contemplate divine purposes at work in and around me. I treat others more respectfully and lovingly. Study and meditation, submission and service, confession and worship are all spiritual disciplines which lead to better Christian lives. Those actions have little merit in themselves, but they strengthen the soul for more authentic spiritual lifestyles. The Spirit’s real fruit is neither knowledge nor orthodoxy, enthusiasm nor testimony; it is holy character. But the will to live as Jesus did is like the strength of your back or the sharpness of your mind. You have to use it or lose it. (seed thoughts taken from The Fax of Life) CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Rescue Wow! That is how I would describe the show put on by the group Rescue. Their immense talent permeates every song that they perform which range from comical to serious. Each song glorifies our Lord. Each one of these young men would be a standout on his own, but together they are a powerhouse. They include our own Tim Storms who is married to Angie (Swaim). He currently holds the world record for lowest bass note sung by a human which all who attend the concert will get to hear. Speaking of concert, they are coming to Coeur d’Alene! They will be performing a concert at NIC March 2nd at 7:00 p.m. All the proceeds will benefit our own Coeur d’Alene Christian School. Be sure to attend this concert. I saw it last year - and loved every minute of it. Tickets are available in the school office, church office and from Georgette Rude. See you there!
