Family News February 1, 2004 Short BY STUFF DAVE SHANERWhat do you think of when you hear the term 'minister' or 'the minister'? The New Testament has apostles, elders, deacons, preachers or evangelists, but the term minister was simply the term for servant. It was not an official designation. Preachers are to be ministers, but it is a term applied to every Christian. In other words, all Christians are to be ministers. Not everyone preaches or teaches (at least publicly), but all can minister. In part, concerning our usage of the term minister, we have fallen victim to our culture. The minister is the one who stands up and preaches or performs a wedding or funeral. Often the minister is the one who visits the sick or encourages the downtrodden. But the New Testament also teaches what is often referred to as the priesthood of all believers. We don't have special ministers who have a lock on God that you don't also have. Over many years, a clergy-laity system developed that has taken the task of ministry out of people's hands and placed it in the hands of the professional. Our Wednesday night class on II Corinthians talks about a ministry of reconciliation that God has entrusted to us. He goes on to say that we are co-workers with God. This is not a reference only to the preacher, but to all of us. Would it change your view of church work if you looked at yourself as a minister? If everyone can believe this, all of a sudden, we can start to view everything we do as an opportunity to minister. The apostle Paul said, we are to 'regard no one from a worldly point of view.' - II Corinthians 5:17. People are more than coincidences, distractions, or acquaintances. They are ones for whom Christ died and was raised. Everyday we need to keep the main thing the main thing. What is that? People are important. God has asked all of us to be ministers of his grace sharing the message of reconciliation. Don't leave it all up to 'the staff'. If you do, they are sure to let you down. But, together with God, we can conquer the world. Have a Great Week!!! And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped. - Exodus 4:31b

Shepherds Corner It was exciting and encouraging to see such a good turn out for our church growth seminar by brother Mark McLean. As we learn from Matthew 28:18-20 God wants his church to grow, and he expects us to go out and teach in order for it to grow. Mark gave us a lot of information and suggestions as to how to overcome some obstacles so that we can grow. But as Mark also said our true spiritual growth comes from keeping our focus on God. Let us all continue in our growth as we continue to help God's church grow. - For the Elders Ladies, Ladies, Ladies!!! How to stay safe in the world today 1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents. 2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home. 3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians. 4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation. 5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in Hospitals. Above all else, avoid hospitals. You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church! Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less. Upcoming Youth Events Sunday AM Teen / Parent Class Of all the events in the lives of the Master and his twelve apostles, one of the most amazing to me was the event in Matthew 14 where Peter walked on the water to Jesus. I just love the humanness of this unhuman episode. The storm on the Sea of Galilee was raging,
and Jesus went out to the apostles, walking on the water. They thought he was
a ghost, but when he identified himself, Peter said, 'Lord, if it is you, tell
me to come to you on the water.' But then he was afraid, and began to sink. Jesus saved him, and when they got into the boat he asked Peter, 'Why did you doubt?' As Larry Huntsperger explains in The Fisherman, the twofold answer to the question is obvious. Peter took his eyes off the Master, and he focused on where he was coming from and what was going on around him. Doubt and fear do not come from seeing the storm around us; they come from not seeing who stands beside us. Whenever we fear, whenever we doubt, whenever we allow our past to define our future and feel the stress and anxiety they bring, whenever we feel ourselves sinking, we must know that we are not seeing our Lord correctly. Jesus is there to walk beside us. Let's keep our eyes on him. CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Hola - from the K-kids. For two weeks we have been on a pretend trip to Mexico. We even flew there on a pretend airplane. We learned to say good morning and how are you, and count to 10, say the months of the year, and we learned a song in Spanish We made Mexican flags and learned the legend of the flag. We made a favorite Mexican toy that the children in Mexico enjoy. We each have our own hand made 'poncho'. On Thursday we had authentic tacos from 'Toro Viejo' and then on Friday we had a fiesta with a pi–ata. Most important we learned that God is also in Mexico and Mexico also has Christian schools. -Miss Utter CCS Valentine's Sale The CCS Valentine's fundraiser has begun!
