STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Be sure to have the Church Planting Seminar on your calendar November 1-2. Stan Granberg from Cascade College will be the speaker. This is a result of our Think Tank a few weeks ago. I am sure you will enjoy his presentations. See the accompanying article for more information.

I would just like to say a word about our secretary here at the church. Kim Howard has been our secretary here for the past 3 years. She has been a real blessing to the office staff and a servant to all who come into the office for information. She has helped to make the office a user-friendly place. Even though she performs secretarial duties for the church, we would like to remind everyone that she often has very busy days. If you need the church to do something for your ministry, call the office and we will try to arrange it. Her time is scheduled by the ministers and elders. Sometimes, people come by and need a major project typed or some copying done at the last minute. The more time you can give us, the more likely it is to get done on time. Dave Shaner schedules her extra projects that are sometimes given to her. Sometimes, we can not get them all done due to time restraints. Items for the Family News church bulletin need to be turned in by Thursday noon (preferably Wednesday evening) to ensure they make it in. At times, the bulletin is already completed when someone calls in for something that has to be in. We try to accommodate your requests, but if you have some extra projects that your ministry requires office staff to handle, please contact Dave. As we all work together, the work is spread out over many people and many hands make the work lighter.

Currently, I am taking a course, Theological Hermeneutics through the Harding Graduate School in Memphis, Tennessee. Hermeneutics is just a fancy word that deals with how to interpret scripture. All of us come to the Bible with a lens that, in part, dictates how we understand it. One of the better books that I have read on the subject lately is entitled God's Holy Fire by authors, Cukrowski, Hamilton, and Thompson. It is volume 2 in the Heart of the Restoration Series published by Abilene Christian University Press in 2002. I highly recommend this book and would encourage you to get a copy for your personal library.

Have a Great Week!

My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:19-20

Church Planting Seminar

As you know, one of the four areas identified for emphasis of the next 5 years is church planting. It is one thing to plan. But, progress comes by working the plan. Dr. Stan Granberg, Associate Professor of Bible and Missions, Cascade College will spend the weekend of November 1st and 2nd with Dalton Gardens members.

You are welcome to attend the seminar on Saturday, November 1st at 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Snacks will be provided. He will also be speaking for Sunday morning assemblies. Make your plans to be here.

Shepherd's Corner

We hear much today about the importance of self-esteem, with the implication that lack of self-esteem is the cause of many of the personal problems and antisocial activities of so many people these days. But this is not the Biblical perspective. The problem really is too much self-esteem. The Biblical command is that we should 'in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves' Phil. 2:3. The man, Moses, was once a prince of Egypt, probably in line to become the pharaoh, a prince of Egypt, but he chose Christ and the people of God instead, 'esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt'.

Paul the apostle could have become the greatest teacher and leader in the religious/political life of his own Jewish people, but he said, 'What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for THE EXCELLENCY OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST JESUS MY LORD' (Phil. 3:7,8) In these verses, 'count' is the same word in the original Greek language as 'esteem'.

Therefore, if we would truly conform to the will of God for our lives, we should be esteeming others more than cultivating self-esteem, knowing and serving Christ more than all the riches and fame of the world. -The Elders

Kids' Harvest Party

6th grade and younger - Friday, Oct. 31st from 6-9 pm. - Games, Prizes, Treats and lots of Fun!

We have a lot of fun plans for the Harvest Party, but we need lots of help to pull it off! There are things that can be done before, during and after the party. Can't get out of the house? Could you bake at home for us? Not a baker? How about helping to serve hot dogs at the party! Can't be there early? How about helping to run a game or clean up after the party?! Please check the kiosk for the sign up sheets to help out in any way you can. Donations are also being accepted and a list of supplies is next to the volunteer sheets. Thank you in advance for helping make this a fun evening for the kids!

Magi Christmas Boxes

Please help the needy children of the world. You can make a box by yourself or bring supplies to fill up a box. A donation box is located in the foyer. If you do one by yourself you will need a flyer, located on the kiosk. This will give you an idea of what to pack and what age groups to pack for. You also need to put a $5 check in each completed box. Have supplies in by October 26th and have completed boxes in by October 29th. Thanks so much for all the support and giving a few children a Happy Christmas! For more information see Alyssa Frahm.

Check out the new updates on the Garden
of Prayer board on the easel in the foyer.

Teen Alert
taken from an article by John Hawkins in church Family magazine

There is no question that haunts us more than the question of purpose. 'Why am I here?' 'What is my place in this world?' And yet, I believe our Father still cares for his children as much as he did for Israel when he said, 'For I know the plans I have made for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'

Jeremiah 29:11.

Teens, we need to sink our teeth into that promise. We know God has something in mind for us, although much of the time we don't have a clue what the plan may be. We believe there is purpose in God's mind, but it still frustrates us that we cannot fit it into our day planner.

The answer is to not give up. God is calling and truly has made each of us for a purpose. Ephesians 1:4 reminds us that 'he chose us in him before the creation of the world.' And the message of John 15 is that even if the whole world seems to reject us, we can transcend such troubles, confident that God himself has chosen us out of the world.

We must not doubt how intimately God knows us. From saving our souls to counting our hairs, God has gone to extraordinary lengths to convince us of his loving, and personal attention. We, ( yes this 'old guy', and you, Vanessa, and Nathan, and Austin, and Ashlin, and Shelby, and Scott, and Holly, and James, and Brandy, and Kelsy, and Joleen, and Jared, and Kristin, and Johnni, and James, and Marc, and Dawn, and Anna, and Evan, and Ashley, and Chris, and Chynna, and Fares, and Laura, and Cameron and Sarah, and Hillary, and Ken, and Jeff, and Connor, and........... have purpose.

There are few things the world needs more than it needs Christians convinced of their purpose in life. Kids, so few of your peers have a sense of purpose for their lives. If your faith in Christ, and your Christian commitment are strong, they give you a purpose in life that stands out like a beacon in the night. You have an attractive strength of character that others envy. If you feed this spiritual sense of purpose with a regular spiritual diet, i.e. scripture study, prayer, Christian companionship, regular worship, it will grow and radiate from your life. Well duh! Didn't Jesus say, 'Let your light shine....'?

Yes, when we know why we are here, we know what to do, and we know who to become. It is only with a sense of purpose that one embarks on spiritual transformation. Christian teens, know your purpose, and live it with passion for Jesus, the One who modeled it.

CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS

Greetings from the K-4 and K-5 class. We are having a wonderful month. It's fire prevention month. Recently the fire department visited CCS. They did an awesome presentation. All the kids enjoyed crawling out of chapel.

Don't forget our annual Spaghetti Feed Dinner Theater on Thursday, October 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the small auditorium. It's going to be great! Featuring scarecrows in the pumpkin patch and another performance of 'The Parables'. All are invited to come and bring your family and friends!

-Miss Robin Utter

We had a great time at the ACSI convention in Portland last week. The we being Dan and Teri Dupey, Debbie Yanzick, and I. The only complaint I have is: So many classes, so little time! There was so much to learn. Myself, I attended such classes as helping children in crisis, storytelling, and puppetry. Then I was able to share my new found knowledge of storytelling with the fourth and fifth grade class when all of us teachers switched classes for an hour on Tuesday. Now that was fun.

What is interesting is that at one time or another, each one of us attended some type of class that included puppetry. As a result we are all excited about including puppets in our school programs. So that will be something to look forward to. Have a great week!

We still have craft booth spaces available but they are going fast. Those still interested need to talk to me as soon as possible. Also we are still in need of donations for the baked food booth and the candy store..... Such as homemade food items (jams, jelly's, fudge, pies, breads, cakes, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Dear Church,
