STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Many ideas came out of the 'Think Tank' Saturday from 3 weeks ago. Many of these ideas are already in process and off and running. There were several great suggestions, but two particular ideas came up several times. One is getting a sign/reader board. There are already people working on this and we should have one very soon. Also the idea of planting a new church in the area was suggested several times. As a result of that, Stan Granberg will be here to conduct a church planting seminar on November 1-2. Stan is currently one of the Bible professors at Cascade College in Portland. He also served as a missionary in Kenya for many years. In addition to that he conducts church planting seminars throughout the Northwest and acts as a consultant to help facilitate this. More information will be given next week in regard to times, but be sure to mark off those dates so you can participate in it. If you would like to be a part of a focus group that helps in the planning of a new congregation, see Ivan Archer.

Family Life Ministries will be here in Coeur d'Alene on November 7-9 to conduct a Weekend to Remember marriage enrichment seminar. This particular group is not from the churches of Christ but have been shown to be very effective in helping troubled marriages get back on a solid base and for helping good marriages to get even better. Dennis and Barbara Rainey developed these seminars and have published several excellent books and videos on marriage. We cannot vouch for all of their teaching, not knowing the instructors personally, but do know they come from a biblical perspective. Brochures for the conference are available at the kiosk in the church building.

I appreciate Ralph Crump preaching in my absence this Sunday. The church in Lebanon, Oregon asked me to conduct a Missions Day emphasis Sunday and Monday. Jim Vice, former administrator of the Coeur d'Alene Christian School is the preacher for the church in Lebanon. We would appreciate your prayers as we conduct this seminar.

Have a Great Week!

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ

Philippians 1:9-10

Inside Church Planting

As you know, one of the four areas identified for emphasis of the next 5 years is Church planting. It is one thing to plan. But, progress comes by working the plan.

Dr. Stan Granberg, Associate Professor of Bible and Missions, Cascade College will spend the weekend of November 1st and 2nd with Dalton Gardens members.

We are seeking persons who will serve as a focus group to advance our efforts toward a church plant. If you are interested in being a part of this planning group please let one of the elders, office staff or Ivan Archer know as soon as possible.

LET US RISE UP AND BUILD

'And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work'

Nehemiah 2:18

It has been said that when the people of God say, 'Let us arise and build' Satan says, 'Let us arise and oppose.' The work of the Lord never advances without Satanic opposition.

Satan opposed Nehemiah externally. Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem did everything they could to stop the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. They tried ridicule: 'They laughed us to scorn, and despised us.' (2:19); anger: 'Sanballat.... was wroth, and took great indignation' (4:1) criticism: What do these feeble Jews? Will they fortify themselves?' Nehemiah succumbed to none of these attacks. (there were many more).

Satan opposed Nehemiah internally, through discouragement: 'The strength of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish (4:10); cowardice: 'Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple.... for they will come to slay you' (6:10).

In spite of it all, the work WAS COMPLETED (6:15) and the enemies of God were defeated (6:16) MAY WE NEVER GIVE UP, BUT CONTINUE IN OUR WORK TO ITS COMPLETION! TO DO THIS IS TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE!! 'Let us approve the things that are excellent' was Paul's prayer for the Philippians. And it's God's will to work for excellence in our Christian service. Finally let us rise up and build the following things in our lives; whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things' R.S.V. Phil. 4:8. -The Elders

'Come Before Winter- Retreat'

I love God's family, the church, the people Jesus redeemed with his precious blood. Through many years of ministry I have seen how God works in beautiful ways through those who love him, trust him, and obey him. When disciples worship, grow and serve together, guided by God's word and energized by his Spirit, they are truly the presence of Christ in this world.

Sincere believers overflow with joyful praise for their redemption and all the awesome works of God's love. Willing disciples of Jesus devote themselves, as he did, to serving others, and mentoring converts who will also learn to serve. They are compelled by God's grace and their own gratitude, to focus heart, mind and life on the Christ who is Lord of their lives. I, myself, have been encouraged over the years by some of these great believers, and I will always be grateful for them.

It is wonderful to see a church whose members are spending time in prayer and Bible study at home, and who are growing in the graces of loving, giving, and sharing with one another, and who are reaching out to the lost in the community. Far too often, Christians have allowed their faith to become institutionalized, believing it okay to leave prayer and Bible study to the corporate church assemblies, and that church staff should take care of visitation, evangelism, training of children, and benevolence. Seeing those things happen in the day-to-day lives of the Christians here at Dalton is gratifying indeed. More and more of us are coming to understand that Bible study, worship assembly, and ministry programs are opportunities for us to serve one another, rather than times to be served. 'Church' is really not about me. It is not about finding a place to meet my needs, but rather, it is about worshiping, serving, and glorifying God, and sharing this with the body of believers.

Church is not an organization whose purpose is to serve the interests of the individual members. Ministry is not the business of a select few. As L. Donovan Owen wrote, 'Faith flounders in the shallow pool of comfort and inactivity rather than running as a deep stream of personal conviction and service out of every disciple.' It is truly gratifying to see so many members of this church of Christ learning to serve, give, teach and encourage. I love this church!

Linda Hopkins,
Northside Church of Christ, Spokane

The Coffee Hour Committee for the Ladies Fall Fellowship wants to thank everyone who furnished breads, muffins, fruits, etc. for last weekend. We appreciate you very much.

To the Church of Christ,

For all who were involved in my wonderful, warm welcome; Russ and Eldon for delivering the bread, and to whoever baked it - it was incredibly delicious!

Thank you all. I'm so happy to have found a church that I want to call 'Home'. I feel completely comfortable and relaxed when I'm there, and thankful for the other group activities and instant friendships I've acquired. Thanks for your help in learning all I can about Christ. I need you as well as Him.

-Carrie Forbush

Thanks so much for cards and prayers, I'm improving slowly. I'm still in lots of pain, but I know God is the greatest healer.
