STUFF   Dave Shaner

Has you summer been as busy as mine? I am sure that it has. I was talking to a lady not too long ago when she commented on how busy it is this time of year. I replied by asking if she has a time of year when she was not so busy. She thought and smiled saying, 'Oh, I guess not. It just seems like I am always busy.' We have a tendency to think that when things slow down, I will be able to devote more to various projects. Ding! Ding! There is always one more thing to do. Just about the time things seems to settle down, something will go wrong to interrupt your nice planned out schedule. I still remember when I was a senior in high school in 1971. My history teacher was projecting into the future about how easy life would be in the 1990's and beyond. She stated that because of all the advances in technology, we would be trying to figure out what to do with all of our extra leisure time! Her prophecy did not come true. Even with all of the high-tech gizmos we have now, those did not produce the leisure time we thought they would. What has happened to all the extra time we saved? We have simply chosen to use it in other ways. We have not allowed it to reduce our stress, but we have simply filled it with something else often even more stressful.

It is all about priorities. Generally speaking, we spend time doing what we value. If I don't have the time to be involved in a certain project, but it is one that I really want to do, suddenly I find the time. If it is something I don't really want to do, it is very easy to find other things that rank higher on my priority list. The apostle Paul said that we are to redeem the time. We only have a limited number of days to ask our neighbor to church, to visit the sick or hurting, to share the gospel with a friend, to go out for coffee with a friend, to take our children to the park. If I wait till I have time, the time will never come. There is a Latin phrase, Carpe Diem. It means seize the day and make life count now. If you have been planning on being involved in a church ministry or whatever you have wanted to do for God, but simply haven't made the time, Carpe Diem! You will be glad you did.

Have a Great Week!

You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

Shepherd's Corner

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." Psalm 30:5 Have you ever felt like you were living your life in darkness, alone and afraid? Even in those dark times God is working in our lives. Listen and hear him whisper. Our God is neither intimidated, limited, nor in any way hampered by darkness. When his children enter into dark seasons of their lives, he is never more available, never more active, never more able to work on our behalf. In fact, God is especially ready in these times to speak peace into our turmoil. To penetrate the thickest darkness with his comforting words. I'm here. I'm on watch. I see your secret pain. Your pain has a purpose. Step into my strength. Taste my joy.

Our Mission to Tecate', Baja, Mexico

Space will not allow me to tell all the good things the Lord did in us, to us, and through us in our work with the little church in Tecate'. He is truly amazing. Mark & Kim Borsheim and I were truly blessed to share this wonderful experience with an awesome group of Spirit-filled teens. And we all thank you for your prayers and for the many ways you encouraged us. No church budget funds were used for this trip. Each participant raised support, or paid his own way. The work included a four day Vacation Bible School in which we had attendance of 77, 78, 78 and 84. More than half of these were children from outside the church. Our teachers, (Scott Simpson, Bobbie Reeves, Jared Wuest, Dawn Knife, Nathan Frisk, Scott Adams, Vanessa Borsheim, James Graham, Adrienne Morse, & Birrell White) assisted by teen interpreters from the church in Tecate', handled the difficult language challenge so very well, allowing Jesus' love to be seen in every way they could. The Tecate' teens learned so much from this experience, and we did as well. Two of them, Ivon and Reben, were baptized on Wednesday morning! I enjoyed my teenage class immensely with Isaac as my interpreter, helping us with the four lessons - Jesus, Joseph, Esther, and David.

Our second area of work was to paint the outside of their church building....a fairly large, two-story building. In three days we gave it two undercoats, and two finish coats. It looked like a new building. We were almost as proud as they were. The sun, at 110 degrees, scorched us, but nobody complained. We drank gallons of water each day. Their teens worked alongside ours, and we all had a great time. Occasionally a little water or paint would get on 'somebody'. I don't know how that happened?!?

The other focus of our time there was with their teen group. This was an on-going joy as we shared every part of our days with them....but especially in the evenings with discussions, games and devotionals. Our hearts were knit together with the shared love of Christ. None of us will ever be the same again. We are all already talking about next year, and I'm convinced that is God's will. We will go to Tecate' again.

IN OUR MIDST

'For where two or three come together in my name there am I with them.'

Matthew 18:20

We must never underestimate the value of a small group praying, for Christ promised that where two or three of his followers are gathered together in his name, He will be in their midst.

What an opportunity it is to practice the presence of Christ in our midst.

Do you remember in the account of the stoning of Stephen he lifted up his eyes and 'saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God'? (Acts 7:55)

The right hand of God is the place of authority and honor. Christ is still at the right hand of God today, interceding for us, but we also have his promise that he will be with us - where even two or three are gathered together.

He is in heaven, but his presence is in the midst of those who gather together in His name. Christ helped the disciples and those who knew him very intimately here on earth to understand this.

G. Campbell Morgan, in his message 'Rekindled Fire,' emphasizes the importance of our Lord's vanishing and appearing after his resurrection.

He explains that the disciples and his friends were learning the lesson that Christ was with them, even when they did not see him with their physical eyes.

These followers of Jesus were practicing his presence even though they could not see him.

After he had vanished from their sight for the last time at his ascension, He was in their midst in the upper room, and they knew it.

Dear Father, Please give us the privilege of being aware of the presence of Jesus, in a prayer group.

Come join us Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. at JB's Restaurant on Appleway and be encouraged by more uplifting thoughts.

A Helping Hand

For those interested in providing food or prepared meals for the Rupnick family. You may drop it off at the building, and Judie Sanborn will deliver it. Please see Robin Utter if you would be able to help out.
