STUFF  Dave Shaner

Tonight, Witness, an a cappella singing group from Cascade College will be performing at the Valley church of Christ. Several local students that have been a part of Camp Prince's Pine are a part of this group. It starts at 6 pm.

Also, this Wednesday evening we will be having a barbecue from 5-6:30 pm. The Bible Study Groups are supplying salads and desserts. After the barbecue, we will be having Won by One perform for us. Won by One is a singing group from Pepperdine University. They will have information about the college and will present a very inspiring message via their songs.

You would enjoy both of these groups very much. We would like to encourage everyone to be a part of these events. They are representing their respective colleges to encourage you to consider the value of a Christian education.

Our college age years are one of the most formidable times of our lives. Our training begins in the home and is enhanced by church. As we gain more independence, we start to form permanent habits. These habits can be changed at any age, but are less likely as they become ingrained within us. Bible class, church attendance, prayer routines, and Bible study are examples of spiritual disciplines that need to be permanent habits. Statisticians show that 21 days form a habit. Each of us needs to evaluate our habits to see if we are growing in the grace of God. Likewise, it is so easy to develop unhealthy habits that keep us from growing more like Christ. Many of our habits can be good things, but even good things can keep us from what we really need to be doing. Paul Faulkner worded it this way, 'We spend so much time on the urgent that we never get around to the important. In other words, let's be sure to keep the main thing the main thing.

Levi Sisemore has been a great blessing to us. He has been a wonderful youth minister intern, a role model, and a good friend. Be sure to keep him in your prayers as he goes to the Sunset School of Preaching to be trained for full-time ministry. If you did not get the opportunity to help in the special contribution for Levi, you may still do so by turning your gift in to the office or our Treasurer, Tim Frahm. Keep Levi in your prayers as he prepares himself to preach the Word!

Have a Great Week!

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

James 1:26-27

Shepherd's Corner

Throughout scripture there are many passages that refer to honoring God. There are a multitude of ways that we can bring honor and glory to his name. One of those ways is through our giving. This past spring we experienced a study of "Taking God At His Word". This study and much prayer has brought a large increase in our giving. The spiritual growth that preceded this increase is the exciting part. Watching God answer prayer and witnessing the renewed trust in Him is an awe inspiring experience. As an example, last Sunday, with our regular giving, the collection for Levi, funds given for missions and for Komsomolsk children's home, you gave in excess of $10,000! That's exciting! The dollar amount is not what creates the excitement but rather the growth that has and is taking place amongst us. Each one of you is to be commended for this. The elders would like to honor you all and encourage you to keep growing! -The Elders

African Evangelism in Namibia

Most will remember Roger Dickson, missionary from South Africa, who spoke here about three years ago. He sends this report:

"Martha and I just returned from preaching the gospel to 250,000 people by stuffing all the P.O. Boxes of the nation of Namibia. We have already had some response. For about $1,500 we can reach this number of people. We stuffed the boxes with a tract on "Christians". I want to stuff another tract in the boxes in about two months. We are also in a project to do the same in the Western Cape Province. The tracts cost .004 cents to print and the box'cost is 8 cents a box. Cheap evangelism."

The message is priceless with a method that certainly is cheap to communicate to a whole country. There are opportunities to share in this work should one desire to travel Africa and labor for the Lord. Talk with the Archers to learn additional details.

Household Items Needed... A family in our congregation is in need of some household items, such as a washer/dryer, oven cookware, pots and pans, children's clothing for a boy size 7/8 , a girl size 5/6x and another girl who wears 18-24 months. You may drop your donations off at the church office. Thanks!

Levi Sisemore was an enjoyable and productive temporary addition to our staff. He touched our lives and was a blessing to all of us. He is now in Abilene for Singing School, and then will go on to Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock. We miss him, and pray God's continued blessings on him. Today we share his last bulletin article.

Magnification

[M.E. magnifien < OFr. magnifier < L. magnificare, to make much of, esteem highly, LL. (Ec.) to worship < magnus, great + facere, to make, do] 1. [rare] to make greater in size, status, or importance; enlarge. 2. to cause to seem greater, more important, etc. than is really so; exaggerate [to magnify one's sufferings] 4. [Archaic] to glorify; praise; extol Ðvi. to have power of increasing the apparent size of an object, as a microscope does.

Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, 2nd College Edition (1980)

If we look at many older songs and religious texts, we see the words 'magnify' and 'magnification' used over and over. 'I will magnify the Lord' is a determination sounded many times in these ecclesiastical writings. I was curious as to what it might have meant if I were to 'magnify the Lord,' too. In Psalm 34:3 the writer pens, 'O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.' In the 69:30 he writes, 'I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.' Mary the mother of Jesus shouted out to her cousin Elisabeth (Luke 1:46), 'My soul doth magnify the Lord.' Interestingly enough, the NIV's translators did not use the English word 'magnify' in their work. The KJV, ASV, NASV, RSV are the 'mainstream' translations that do use 'magnify' as an equivalent of the Greek word 'megaluno' (which means 'to make -or declare- great, i.e. increase or extol'). Instead, the NIV, TLB, NLT and other Bible versions use 'praise.'

When I think of how we magnify -for example- small print so as to be able to better read what is written, I know that we have to have a lens of some sort. Now, if we're the ones doing the magnifying (look at definition #4 É 'as a microscope does') then we've got to be the ones who 'make God look good.' Not that God needs our help to improve His image, but I am reminded of the scripture which reads, 'let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.' You see, we're the lens that men use to see God. We have to be always ready, always presenting a God-centered existence through which men can see the life-changing power and life-giving love He gives.

Perhaps it's time to revive the term 'I will magnify the Lord.'

CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS

Winners Again! 2nd Place.....2nd Place.....2nd Place!

The CCS 4th of July Float won second place two (2) years in a row. Our theme this year was "Remember the Columbia". We had an unexpected early launch Friday morning when it left the trailer by Coeur d'Alene High School and landed on the sidewalk. Our first thought was "disaster". But, we all worked together at the site (17th and Sherman) and put together a beautiful final package for the parade.

I appreciate ALL those who participated in making this an exciting day, including our walkers behind the float. At times we seemed like two separate exhibits! Britni Welter was often the MAIN focus of the walkers. The crowds smiled and waved as she passed by in her stroller dressed in patriotic attire.

I also want to thank Rick and Janet Blanchard for ALL their help and encouragement and providing the "wheels" for the event. And, I cannot forget about the ice cold water and drinks they provided on a very warm morning. Join us for next year!
