The Real Meaning of Holy Living

Human beings are not divine. They cannot be 'holy' in the magnificent sense that God is holy. Still, God can 'make them holy' or 'sanctify them' through the blood of Jesus, and in God's sight they can 'be holy.' Perhaps the clearest definition of 'holiness' comes from the apostle Paul. He says that 'holiness' consists of:

+ being 'separate' or different from ungodly people in thought, word, & deed;

+ having a close relationship to God, like sons and daughters have with a loving father; and

+ cleansing oneself from everything that would defile body or spirit.

In recent years, groups in the United States which are trying to promote good health and long life have adopted catchy sayings to influence and motivate the public. 'Say NO' to drugs,' or 'Say No' to drinking and driving,' 'Say No' to foods that have high cholesterol content,' have become slogans. God's appeal for human beings to 'be holy' is an appeal to 'Say No' to sources that promote evil thoughts, to environments that solicit and condone wicked speech, and to people and influences which participate in and nurture ungodly living.'

Every human being can respond to this appeal. It simply means that God has given us the capabilities of becoming what he created us to be, if we are willing to turn to Him and let Him work salvation and holiness in our hearts and lives. No one can be sinlessly perfect. God knows that and does not expect it. But each person who is willing can turn to God and let God make her or him holy so that God may be glorified in his creatures.

Have a Great Week!!

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Shepherd's Corner

Friday, July 4th marked the celebration of Independence Day, the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed establishing the United States as a free nation. With the exception of Mike Reeves, none of us are old enough to have experienced this. The oppression of being controlled by another power is a foreign concept to us. All we have ever known is freedom.

Our spiritual lives are another story. We were all living under the oppressive power of sin and the father of lies. But that all changed the day we were immersed into Christ. We know what it was like to be lost but we also know how it feels to be free.. Just as our great nation has a historic document declaring freedom, we as Christians have a greater declaration of freedom. It is not written on parchment but written on our hearts. Not signed by John Hancock but signed by our savior in his own blood. Doesn't it feel wonderful to be free? But lest we grow complacent let's not forget what it was like to be lost. -The Elders

TOGO WEST AFRICA

Kabiye Mission News

Our mission work in Togo is truly a beautiful work of God. In two years there have been nine congregations of the Lord's Church planted in the following villages around Kara: N'Djdie, Kpindi, Sokode, Sanda Te, Legue-Legue, Kitokoda, Kara, Tungboa, and Kindja. At the present time their preaching points are in the villages of Nangbade, Nyangbanda, Limgao, and Chickpe. I have lost track of the number of baptisms, but it is getting close to 200. Just last Friday 1 woman was baptized in Tungboa, and 7 men & 7 women were baptized at Sokode.

Let's continue to hold up the hands of the mission team there: David & Becky Reeves, Matt & Andrea Miller, Don & Jane Neal, and Brian & Tracy Riess. They are enduring many hardships, and having the time of their lives sharing the gospel of Christ with a people who have never heard of Jesus. Pray, and praise God who is always faithful to his servants.

Work Days at the Church

A group is needed to help clean up and repaint the classrooms in the basement on July 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. See Pat Riggs. We will also be having a church work day on Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. All ages are welcome to come. Please bring buckets and we will provide the cleaning supplies. God has blessed us with a very nice facility to meet in. Let's honor him in the care we show for it.

World Bible School News

We got about 200 lessons and letters to correct from Joel in California. This is one of the letters I received. We receive a lot of letters but this one seemed special to me. My helpers and I have finished correcting the lessons and they are ready to go out.

In Christ, Marjorie Dupey

Dear teacher,

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May the Lord continue to bless you and give you many more years in His service. I must say that I am encouraged by your consistency and effort for us in Africa.

I could not by this letter recount some of the opposition I am encountering from my immediate family members especially my parents who are staunch Mohammedans (Muslims) since I renounced Islam and became baptized into Christ. Often it became hard to go on because they withdrew their responsibility to me but I have always found strength in Christ. Please remember me in your prayers, now that I attend the Christian Bible College at Abeokuta in Ogun State Nigeria. I need not to tell you how difficult this is going to be for me, especially coping with the financial implications of this decision. But I really wanted to study more of God's word even if I have to disobey my parents (and I hope I am right!)

The college is about 500 k/m from my home state and I shall be there full time. I still request you send my the study Bible and materials that can help me in my courses. May the Lord continue to bless you.

Yours in Christ, Lawalson Akinola
