Family News June 1, 2003 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerWe appreciate all who turned in the questionnaire regarding planning the future of the church here in Dalton Gardens. Some of these ideas will be discussed at the congregational meeting this afternoon. The shepherds of this church body appreciate all of your responses. Communication is the key to any group learning to get along well and work together. Whenever someone does not know what is being done in any sphere, there is a tendency toward speculation and that can often become a breeding ground for discontent. This just doesn't apply to church relations but also to interpersonal ones as well. If you notice yourself ever getting into a critical mode, seek to do several things. Number one is to check the source of your information. Often times, our information is built on a 'I heard from so and so that so and so said this about so and so, etc.' Secondly, if you are finding yourself tempted to criticize someone, go to that person yourself instead of through someone else. Jesus always encouraged us to go to the source. In Matthew 18:15-20, in reference to someone who has committed a sin, Jesus instructed us to go to the individual and encourage him to repent. Only after doing this, are we to involve anyone else. This was in regard to someone who has sinned against you. The opposite is true as well. In Matthew 5:23-24, regarding someone that I have offended or sinned against (it doesn't matter if the perception is true or not), it is my responsibility to go to the one involved and make it right. Whenever we do this, we can often solve whatever the problem was quickly without involving others. It also remedies miscommunication because someone took the initiative to get it resolved properly. Notice who that someone is! In every case, the responsibility falls on myself. If you are like me, you likely tend to avoid confrontation. That is likely not on anybody's top ten of enjoyable things to do. But if we will communicate regularly with one another, we lessen the fears that confrontation often brings with it. In the church, always be sure to let your ideas be known. With everybody adding their suggestions, we often can piece an entire program together where the sum of the parts creates a better whole. Have a Great Week! Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:1-2

It will meet at 5:00 p.m., in the home of Keith and Carole Fredrikson, 7800 W. Mt. Carleton Drive, Spirit Lake. If you need directions, call the Fredrikson's at 623-6133.Ray Rayburn will be the instructor, with Keith filling in when Ray is out of town. The topic is based on the professional film: 'JESUS OF NAZARETH'. This is the epic majesty of the life of Jesus as told by the Apostles. The class will consist of discussion, film viewing, fellowship; all designed to bring the participants closer to an in-depth life like Jesus. We are Christians, but how many of us really know what Christ was like? When tempted, our answer is to ask ourselves, 'What would Jesus do?' But do we really know what Christ would do? We need to learn more of 'The Book and the Man Nobody Knows'. We urge members to bring a non-member with them for this new and exciting study of Jesus of Nazareth. Stephen Ministry We are in the process of organizing the second class for Stephen Ministers. A few weeks ago letters were sent to several individuals. If you did not receive a letter and would like to be considered for this class, please notify either Dave Bruner, Ralph or Anna Crump concerning your interest. Shepherd's Corner In March, Ivan Archer and Lamont Petersen had an opportunity to attend a Church Planting workshop at Cascade College. Many churches in the brotherhood are not growing because of too much of an inward focus. The congregations that are growing are the ones that are planting churches. The small group concept is working to accomplish this, especially if a church can be planted near an existing congregation. The questionnaire recently distributed addressed this possibility, so we hope you all responded. If you did not complete the questionnaire, would you please do so today. Extra copies are available on the kiosk. -The Elders Secret Sisters Just a note to remind you to let your secret sister know you are praying for her. Family Congratulations! to grandparents Larry & Sylvia Slate on the arrival of their new grandson, Kolby Duane born May 22nd. He weighed 8lbs. 13 oz. and was 21 1/2 inches long.Mike's Memos.... Guest article by Levi Sisemore Just this past Thursday I talked with my dad, who is still in Russia. I hadn't talked with him in several months. It was an eighteen-minute conversation É with about fifteen minutes of arguing. He and I had a difference of opinion on a matter that, in the long run, didn't really matter. It wasn't trivial or insignificant, but nor did my salvation hang on it. As I write this, I'm trying to remember just why it is that such a big deal was made of it. I'm not saying that one of us should of just rolled over and given in, but was it worth getting into a full-blown argument over? I mean, this is my daddy and in the only chance I had to talk with him, I just let the Devil get a foothold and keep the two of us back from building up one another. By the middle of the conversation I was crying, but trying to keep some composure. Why did we argue? 'Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a wicked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the Word of Life.' (Philippians 2:14. 15) How many things does it say to do without arguing? Half? A third maybe? 'Do everything É' Do we sometimes pass over that verse as something that 'we just can't do?' I know I have in the past. What a pretty picture it would be, though, if there was no arguing. Serenity and calm, peaceful discussions instead of knock-down-drag-out-name-callin'-mud-slingin' contests. Instead of having a blow up, why not try to remember to 'encourage one another and build each other up' so that we will be more Christ-like? Young people, there's something said in the Bible specifically to you about your relationship with your parents. Who is it you argue with most? When I was living at home, it was with my mom and dad (mostly my dad) É what were 99.9999% of all the arguments over? Mom and dad wanted me to do something that I didn't want to do, or they wanted me to behave a certain way É 'Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.' (Ephesians 6:1) 'Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.' (Colossians 3:20) Do we take these verses seriously, too? It's a sobering thought to know that something as 'natural' as arguing is not pleasing to God. Aren't we extra thankful for forgiveness at times like this? CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS 'Wow! It is the end of May already?! We have experienced the full nine months of the school year?! It sure doesn't feel like it. Time has past so quickly, and we have another year's worth of memories stored, to look back on. Another great year of learning and growing. Of friendships and experiences. A time of changes, of saying goodbye and looking forward. It has been a great year. Last Thursday, the K4-5th grade experienced a wonderful field trip. We went to the Old Cataldo Mission. It was a mini adventure for all the kids. Each were able to see real Indian artifacts, and walk on historical ground. We even were able to talk to a gentleman who was reenacting the time period for us. The students were awestruck. More great memories. This Thursday, the 5K class will graduate! Thereby becoming official grade schoolers. The ceremony is open to all who would like to celebrate with us. The next day, on Friday, at 11 am, we will have a special ceremony where each student will receive an award. Then it will be officially summer vacation! Many, many more memories. Please join with us as we pray that each child and his family has a safe vacation filled with happy memories that will last a lifetime.
