Family News March 23, 2003 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerLast week's youth rally was a great event. I would like to commend our teenagers for their hard work. Special kudos goes to James Graham and Nathan Frisk for their excellent sermons last Sunday morning. We had nearly 400 total in attendance which is noteworthy in itself. I would also like to thank our out of town guests for their thoughtfulness. After all, how many times does it happen when teenagers staying at your home leave it cleaner than when they found it?! There were many others who helped make it a success as well. When we all work together, great things happen. Today, we kick off our sermon series entitled, 'Take God at His Word.' Giving is a subject many preachers like to avoid. One reason is battling the perception that all churches care about is your money. Another is the desire to avoid being identified with charlatan television evangelists. We must never allow someone's abuse to keep us from teaching the truth. The subject of giving is discussed frequently in the Bible. The more you explore the subject, the more you discover that giving is really a matter of faith. Indeed, when you take God at His Word, faith is exercised, and God honors your actions. Be sure to make your reading a family event and expect God to bless you. I am excited and am looking forward to what God will do in our lives and in His church! Last week, I attended a week long class at the Harding Graduate School in Memphis, Tennessee on Small Groups in the Church. Nearly every church in America that is growing is doing so largely because of an active small group ministry. There are many desirable objectives for being part of a Bible Study Group here at Dalton Gardens. Among these include, Bible study, evangelism, fellowship, accountability, service, and prayer. Some groups tend to concentrate more on one than some of the others. A notable finding in small group research has found that people who are a part of a small group do not fall away from the Lord nor do they leave the church. The obvious lesson? To help ensure and stabilize your relationship with God, be active in a Bible Study Group. Listed on the back of the Family News bulletin are the various Bible Study Groups that meet each week. Contact one of them if you need help in finding a group. Have a Great Week!! In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' - Acts 20:35
Take God At His Word Explore God's Word and see how He uses tithing as a doorway to blessings today. Read chapter two from Take God at His Word to start your discovery process before next Sunday. Getting to Know You Better Two of your shepherds with the church here are meeting on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. with a different family each week in an effort to better meet your needs. They will be getting your input and offering ways in which you will be able to get involved in the work of the Lord's church. So........ when you are called, welcome their invitation as they want to serve you. They are starting with the newer members, but if you would like to meet sooner, please contact the office. Leadership Training for Christ All pre-convention events are now complete and sent to Phoenix. Some excellent work has been done. Now we work on convention events, as we anticipate the trip to Phoenix April 17th - 20th. Airline tickets have been purchased at $254.11. If anyone would like to help out, some could surely use the help. Fishing Seminar This is a chance to bond with your fellow brothers in learning how to 'Deep Water' fish on Lake Pend Oreille. The seminar will be held on March 29th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 7950-F Meadowlark Way, Hayden. If interested, a sign-up sheet is on the kiosk or if you're needing more information contact Rick Blanchard at 762-5096. We Need New Helpers!!! It is awesome to have new babies in the congregation this however does create a need for additional nursery staff. It only requires a brief commitment. The idea is for each helper to only have to work two Sundays a year. If we get enough volunteers this is possible. As of now we need more helpers. Please let me know if you would like to help out our church families and allow these mothers and fathers a chance for uninterrupted worship with the rest of us. Please call Alyssa Frahm at 665-5851. Shepherd's Corner Lately we have had several lessons about faith, and to help us to grow in our faith. Today brother Dave is beginning a new series of lessons which is from Take God At His Word. This material is also developed to help us grow in our faith. A growth that comes as we 'experience the power of giving.' A growth that comes as we learn to trust in God as we give. God has promised that He will bless us. Sometimes we don't think He will, or that He has because His blessings aren't always what we think they should be. When this occurs it is usually because we begin to take our focus off of God, and to not trust Him. We pray that this material will help you to grow in your faith with God. That you may continue to grow in your trust in God as you 'experience the power of giving.' -The Elders Game Night Do you like to play board games, card games, dominos, etc.? Please bring snacks and drinks to share. Bring any games you'd like to play. If you are a family with children, come and bring the little ones. Just be sure to bring an activity for them so they will have fun while you are having your fun. Game night will be Friday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the kitchen. Friday Night Youth Group 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. This is a weekly youth activity hosted in parents' homes or at the church building. We would also welcome opportunities to come to other church member's homes. If you would enjoy having a group of about 15 to 20 teens come and sing and laugh and share in your home, let us know, and we'll schedule a time. Thank yous! Thank you all for your prayers, cards, hugs and words of encouragement at this time of loss of my brother and Chynna's uncle, Vince. Dominick Sorino*Chris Flick*Kathryn Lee Mike's Memos.... "The Cost Of Children" The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into: $8,896.66 a year, $741.38 a month, or $171.08 a week. That's a mere $24.24 a day! Just over a dollar an hour. Still, you might think the best financial advice says don't have children if you want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you get for your $160,140? 1. Naming rights. First, middle, and last! 2. Glimpses of God every day. 3. Giggles under the covers every night. 4. More love than your heart can hold. 5. Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs. 6. Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies. 7. A hand to hold, usually covered with jam. 8. A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites, building sand castles, and skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain. 9. Someone to laugh yourself silly with no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed. For $160,140. 1. You get to finger-paint, carve pumpkins, play hide-and-seek, catch lightning bugs, and never stop believing in Santa Claus. 2. You have an excuse to keep: reading the Adventures of Pooh and watching Saturday morning cartoons, going to Disney movies, and wishing on stars. 3. You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day. For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. 1. You get to be a hero just for retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof, taking the training wheels off the bike, removing a splinter, filling a wading pool, coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless. 2. You get a front row seat to history to witness the first step, first word, first bra, first date, and first time behind the wheel. 3. You get to be immortal. 4. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren. 5. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match. In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there with God. (Well, at least until they reach their teenage years.) 6. You have all the power to heal a booboo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost. ENJOY YOUR KIDS AND GRAND KIDS. The best blessings in life are family and friends. CCS CORNER SCHOOL NEWS Join us any day for chapel at 8:45 a.m. Spring is officially here!
