Our Marriage Matters Seminar with Dr. Jerry & Lynn Jones was tremendous. Most seminars held anywhere tend to fade as the week goes on, but this one just kept getting bigger. Jerry and Lynn indicated that this was one of the more enjoyable seminars that they have put on. They were particularly impressed by the response of our young people. The principles that were taught by the Jones' can help people whether married or not. It is especially good for people to learn these principles before they are married.

If you were not able to attend all of the sessions, you may check out the video of all the lessons or individual tapes of each lesson through our tape library. They are not available for sale except through Marriage Matters. If you would like to purchase a set, please check with the office for more information.

We had several guests from both the Coeur d'Alene area as well as Spokane. One of our visitors made the statement that this was one of the friendliest churches that they had ever been to.

I would like to give some of the suggestions that I give as part of premarital counseling sessions that I conduct with young couples . I refer to them as Rules for a Happy Marriage. Some of these are qualified, but may be helpful to you. I am sure that you could add to this list. If you have a good suggestion, please let me know.

1. Keep personal attractiveness at its very best.
2. Eliminate the needless irritants and sources of antagonism.
3. Don't cherish feelings of resentment.
4. Look for new ways of doing joyful activities together.
5. Be loyal! Refuse to talk about faults or troubles to outsiders.
6. Don't wonder what would have happened if you had married someone else.
7. Learn that neither can dominate the other -- never get mad at the same time.
8. Don't try to get your way by unfair means.
9. Learn that a dissatisfaction with self brings an impulse to criticize.
10. Keep your sense of humor.
11. Let your partner know that he or she is first in your life after God.
12. Learn to make the best of whatever life brings--learn to be content.
13. Make together a long range plan of finance.
14. Don't neglect your health.
15. Cultivate your own spiritual life.

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

-Romans 14:19

'Dead Men Walking'

With this year's youth rally only three weeks off, we need now to enlist the help of the whole congregation.....food, housing, registration, etc. From previous years' experience, you know that we will be needing housing, for all our out-of-town guests. Please sign the sheet on the kiosk TODAY and indicate the number of kids you can manage. Remember, they will bring sleeping bags. They only need floor space, access to a bathroom, and breakfast on Saturday & Sunday. If you need help with transportation, that can be arranged. As we open out hearts and our homes to others, God will send His blessings to us and through us. 'Give, and it will be given to you.....'

We try hard to make the Dalton Gardens Youth Rally a weekend for real spiritual growth for Christian teens in the Northwest. It takes the cooperative efforts of everyone in this church family to make this happen. Please help!

Shepherd's Corner

Out of Sight - Out of Mind. How true this statement seems to apply to us in the church. If we don't see something every day we seem to forget it exists. During 2002, the prayer ministry started several projects to encourage the congregation. Here's a short summary of those projects. Each Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. we meet for breakfast and prayer. You are encouraged to attend at any time. Also part of the ministry completed is the prayer room located on the southeast corner of the auditorium. It is available for anyone's use, so please use it. Another element of prayer which includes everyone in the congregation is our prayer trios. Strong prayer relationships are developing through families and individuals sharing their needs and praying for one another. The final project is the Garden of Prayer. You can see that this project is started and now that spring is approaching, we need to volunteer to help Rick Blanchard complete it. Please share some of your time and come fellowship with members as we do this project. God blesses us so much. -The Elders

Ladies Craft Night

Our next Ladies Craft night will be on February 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Sandy Simpson. Bring your unfinished crafts and supplies to use and share, or come and learn a new one from someone else. Also bring a card table if you need table space to craft on and bring your favorite snacks (low fat or sugar free if you wish) to keep us going. See you all there!

Vacation Bible School

We are beginning big plans for a super VBS this year. The theme is Super Heroes of the Bible. We plan to learn all about Jesus, Daniel, Esther, and Joseph. VBS is July 7 - 10, but you can help out now by donating craft items to the box in the foyer. If everyone donates just an item or two in these early months, we'll have a much easier preparation this summer! Thank you in advance! Here are some items we could use: child-size blunt-tip scissors, boxes of markers and crayons, bottles of glue, construction paper (any size, any color), yarn, Sharpies markers, pencils, popsicle sticks, felt, old plain white bed sheets, pipe cleaners, and most of all - TEACHERS AND VOLUNTEERS (see Michelle Kish or Alyssa Frahm to volunteer).

Mike's Memos....

Bringing Up Kids

There was a time when the home community was helpful to parents in the rearing of children. Censorship kept the movies from going too far, schools maintained strict discipline, infractions were reported to parents, chaperones usually preserved virginity, alcohol was not sold to minors, and illicit drugs were un-heard of.

Unfortunately, rather than assisting parents in their child-rearing responsibilities, now the culture actually conspires against them. Harmful ideas bombard them from every angle. The world becomes progressively more sexualized and violent, with too many opportunities for kids to get into trouble. Innumerable 'voices' are out there enticing them to do what is wrong. Parental authority is being undermined at every turn.

Considering all these negative impacts, it is doubly important to build positive relationships with our kids at home and at church. It is still very important to prohibit immoral or harmful behavior, but those prohibitions must be supplemented by an emotional closeness that makes children want to do what is right. They must know that you love them unconditionally. Josh McDowell said, 'Rules without relationship lead to rebellion.' The tricky part is to establish those friendships while maintaining parental / adult authority and respect. This requires personal time and effort.

Close-knit physical and spiritual families help to keep kids grounded when the world is up-side-down and is urging them to break loose. We dare not become disconnected during the time when everything is on the line. Sooner or later you will need to draw on the foundations of love and caring that have been built through the years. This love bank is built with a healthy balance of authority and love.

'Dead Men Walking'

Richland Bible Bowl.... Last Friday night and Saturday Earlene and I took 15 of our teens to participate in a Bible Bowl Challenge with the Richland teens. It was a great time of Christian fellowship, and learning more of God's word. We shared our knowledge of Matthew chapters 1 - 20. Scores ranged from average to very high, and I am proud of these kids for their efforts to learn the scriptures. It is only eight weeks until we go to Phoenix for the LTC convention and Bible Bowl over all the book of Matthew. We covet your prayers.

CCS CORNER - School News

Greetings from Miss Utter!

When my oldest daughter was 3 it was then I found my path and a wonderful adventure. 16 years of early childhood experience and my best years have been here at CCS. As I teach the blessings of God to my K-kids I learn myself. As of today February 23, the reading from 'Blessings Everyday' is:

The Perfect Path

God will not permit the godly to slip or fall.

Psalm 55:22

Going through life is like taking a walk through the woods. There are little twigs that are really easy to step over and big tree trunks you have to climb over. Sometimes you might get lost, and other times you know just where to go. As you walk through life, isn't it nice to know God is walking with you? When you follow his path, you'll never fall or lose your way.

God's path is the best path for one and for all.

If I follow him, then he won't let me fall.

Aloha! We're goin' Hawaiian!
