STUFF   Dave Shaner

We will be hosting a Marriage Matters seminar February 16-19. Our speakers for this seminar will be Jerry and Lynn Jones from St. Charles, Missouri. I had the opportunity to be able to take several preaching classes under Jerry when he was a professor at Harding University. Together, both Jerry and Lynn bring a wealth of experience, humor, and insight into their seminar. They have conducted these in many states and at college lectureships and workshops. He has spoken here at Dalton Gardens several times, but it has been over 10 years ago since he was last here. This seminar will focus on a number of life/family issues including recovery from the death or divorce of a spouse, parenting, listening skills, and the effects of pornography. It will be valuable for teens and adults.

In talking with Jerry, he indicated how important it is to have maximum attendance for the very first class which is on Sunday morning. He has asked us to have an attendance drive for that day. If every one brought one person with him, we could have well over 400 in attendance! Let's mark this day as Friend Day and seek to set a record for attendance. I am sure we could accomplish this if we all work together. What can you do to help insure the success of the seminar? First, you could pray every day for both Jerry and Lynn and for lives to be drawn closer to God. Secondly, make a commitment to be there yourself. Thirdly, invite a friend to come with you. Fourth, you can help pass out brochures advertising the seminar to neighbors and local businesses. Thanks so much to all who helped with the special contribution taken up last week to defray some of the expenses for this meeting. Over $1,100 was collected. That's fantastic.

I had the opportunity to attend a preacher's expositors seminar at Cascade College in Portland last week and was reminded of what God can do through the proclaimed Word. His Word is not something that was just intended for Christians 2,000 years ago but is alive and active today as much as at any time. Preaching has always been one of God's main tools for changing people's lives. It is a huge responsibility, but is a great privilege to be able to preach with the church in Dalton. I am blessed to be here. Pray that I may proclaim it fearlessly as I should.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK !!

Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.' Matthew 16:24

Marriage Matters Seminar

Dr. Jerry & Lynn Jones

February 16-19, 2003

This couple brings a wealth of experiences and exceptional qualifications to this seminar. Jerry's education includes two master's degrees and a doctorate. His forty-year teaching ministry has taken him to 43 states and six foreign countries and includes 17 years of teaching at Harding University, in Searcy, Arkansas. Lynn's education includes a Master's degree in clinical psychology and seven years of university level teaching.

Jerry and Lynn married in 1995, the second marriage for each. Jerry's 35 year marriage ended in 1994 with the loss of his wife to a 5-year battle with cancer. Lynn's 23-year marriage ended in divorce in 1993.

Jerry and Lynn will openly share their insights and experience in this seminar's series of studies and special sessions designed to benefit any marriage.

Shepherd's Corner

Isaiah 5:20 says "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." When people do not observe the distinction between good and evil, destruction soon follows. It is easy for people to say, "No one can decide for anyone else what is really right or wrong." They may think that getting drunk can't hurt them, that extramarital sex isn't really wrong, or that money doesn't control them. But when we make excuses for our actions, we break down the distinction between right and wrong. If we do not take God's word as our standard, soon all moral choices will appear fuzzy. Without God, we are headed for a breakdown and much suffering.

Mike's Memos....

Youth Ministry is so much fun!

It is not true, and I wouldn't suggest that all we do in youth ministry is a joy ride. Far from it! There are challenges. Big challenges. Almost daily challenges, and lots and lots of long hours and hard work. But for over thirty years it has been, and continues to be a source of great joy in my life.

Youth ministry is fun because of the wonderful, contagious enthusiasm with which most young people approach life on a daily basis. Oh, their lives are filled with struggles, but most of the time they choose to see the bright side...to live on the bright side. They choose to believe, and act on the belief, that somehow things will work out for the best....just as Jesus promised it would for those who love and trust him. They are 'eternal optimists', and I love that. Working with them helps me be that way.

It is fun because of the wholesome, Christ-filled relationships that result from caring, consistent, regular sharing of the love of Christ that dwells in us, and that we strive to make grow. My life has been continually enriched by the sweet fellowship of kids who desire to build loving friendships, without regard for age differences, upon the shared heart of Jesus Christ. Hearts all bound up in the love of Jesus truly beat as one.

Youth ministry fills me with exhilaration as I watch, and share in the spiritual development of our kids. I love them so much. And to witness the transformation of their lives as they increasingly allow God's word, and his Spirit, to mold them into the pattern set by Jesus, has to be life's greatest joy. Yes, like some others I know, they make mistakes, and bungle the process, but God is so faithful. And as long as we can keep them, with their beautiful soft hearts, coming back to the Father, He will build them into Christian men and women, valuable to the kingdom both now and in future years.

It is fun because the developmental process must, for young people, include an array of fun stuff to do. As we learn, we interact with other kids at camps, youth rallies, retreats, snowball fights, hiking, group games, etc. I've long since lost track of the number of these activities I have shared with kids, but I always enjoy them. I enjoy going to, interacting with, and teaching their classes. I love the exuberance of their singing. I love sharing their struggles...their joy and their pain.

Yes, Youth Ministry is fun. It really is. I'm so thankful to God, and to you...church, parents and kids for allowing me to have so much fun. Next month we will begin our eighth year here at Dalton. How time flies when you're having fun!

Bible Bowl Challenge

CCS CORNER - School News

A Time to Thank! by Dan DuPey

When is the time to be thankful? When do you thank someone for what they have done?

We CAN be excited and appreciative for all that we HAVE to be thankful for! Can we do this to the glory of God? As God's people, His soldiers, as we live each day, we should emulate His Son. In our thankfulness, we need to be kind-hearted, humble, giving, sharing!

It is NOT always easy to do, but essential for those who love the Lord. When we are thankful we become more humble. It just happens. When we give to each other from our resources and/or our time, we become more humble. Romans 12:3 discusses how we should acknowledge who we are with all our strengths and weaknesses, pluses and minuses, successes and failures! Jesus PRAISED the humble, the thankful, and those with a giving heart. When we give they know we care. And, remember, NOW they will care about what we KNOW! Humility is NOT an option for us as believers. It is an ESSENTIAL if we want to walk with God. Doesn't scripture say over and over again that we either walk humbly with Him or not at all. Look at Psalms 138:6; Is 57:15; I Peter 5:5-7. And, Micah instructs us on the importance of humility, kindness, and "what is good". "He has shown you. O man, what good is; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to Love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8
