Family News January 12, 2003 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerThe church which meets in Dalton Gardens will be having a congregational meeting next Sunday afternoon. This is a time of communication of where the church here is going and a time where everyone can participate with their input. I appreciate our elders for making such a time whereby everyone's viewpoint can be expressed and understood. Our Sunday evening Bible Study Groups will not be meeting next week in order to encourage attendance at the congregational meeting. Why should you come to this? After all, you will have already been to the church assembly earlier that day. I suppose that depends on why you are a Christian and what your view of the church is. Many look at church as a duty to be performed at a certain time and place in order to have your name checked. Once this has happened, church is rarely thought of until the next check time. Although we are happy to have 'check' people come to the assembly in hopes that something can be said or done to encourage them to take the Lord more seriously, the truth is that God is displeased. In Amos 5:21, God said, 'I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies.' He goes on to say that without a sense of justice and caring among the people for each other, that all the music, prayers, and offerings are meaningless. The word, 'ekklesia', translated 'church' refers to the assembly of God's people. It is not something you do as much as somebody you are. The people of God need to care about each other and about what goes on. Many see church as something that the elders and preachers do. In reality, church should be that which we are all together on. We are a body that needs to work closely together. Families sometimes have family meetings. This is a family time designed to help each of us get better involved and to understand one another better. It is not designed to be a gripe session or a time to tear down, but a time to build up and encourage. Ask yourselves why you 'go to church'. Why are there times when you don't go? Whenever I don't attend an assembly of God's people it is either because I have something else I would rather be doing, it is not that important, something has come up that is more important, or I physically am unable to go. Let's not give up the habit of meeting regularly to love and encourage each other to keep on keeping on. But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.' - Matthew 14:27
Congregational Meeting There will be a Congregational meeting on January 19, at 3:00 pm. We will be discussing plans for the year 2003 as well as receiving input from anyone desiring to do so. Included in this will be the mandatory Idaho State Incorporation Meeting. Also, following the meeting we will be having a dessert pot luck. So bring a dessert that will go with George's famous homemade ice cream. Everyone is encouraged to attend. GREAT NEWS!!! Mark Mood is finally home! Some of you have graciously helped in those kinds of circumstances, and I thank you. We need some help right now; if anyone can help at this time, see Mike. Shepherd's Corner We all remember the saying, "Reach Out And Touch Someone" and the emphasis put on calling family and friends. In the church it is especially important that we reach out and get to know each other to strengthen the body. As we again prepare for new prayer groups to be assigned we have the opportunity to get to know another family in a more intimate way. The benefit is a closer relationship, getting to know the specific needs of our prayer group and becoming powerful prayer partners. The value of prayer in our lives is strengthening and bonding. Keep in touch, make calls, send cards, spend time with each other. Most of all Pray for and with each other. -The Elders 'Families That Glow' Tweeners Winter Retreat If you have not sign-up yet, please do so today! January 17th - 19th WINTERFEST - Northside's Youth Rally Get Off the Roller Coaster (part two of a guest article by Brent Riggs - edited) At the end of last week's article we said, impulsive Christianity (the old roller coaster) leads us to spiritual frustration and eventually discouragement. The day will come when we get sick of it and don't even want to try anymore. So...... What is the cure for impulsiveness? Discipline (doing the right thing despite feeling), consistency (planning the right thing despite feeling), routine (boundaries, security and predictability which lead to consistency) and daily living (quit trying to fix your whole life in one shot) Let's start with the last point because that is where it all begins. Don't worry about fixing your WHOLE life. God is only concerned with what you do today. He'll forgive you for yesterday, and only He knows if there will even be a tomorrow. God is the God of NEW BEGINNING every single day. You have a new chance to please God and grow close to Him every day, 'pressing on towards the mark'. Impulsiveness says 'fix my whole life right now and I'll become a super Christian for the rest of my life'. Discipline says 'Lord, what will you have me do today?' Living on a day-by-day basis allows us to turn our failures into 'bumps' instead of roller coaster hills. Now don't miss this, its important. If you live your life one day at a time, then tomorrow you will only have, AT MOST, one day's failure to deal with. Not six weeks, six months or six years worth. A bump instead of a mountain. Okay, that's great but most of us need something practical to sink our teeth into. Well....here are daily disciplines that will help you to begin to cultivate consistency and kill impulsiveness: *Wake up at the same time every day. *Spend a set amount of time, at least 15 minutes, of each day with God. *Confess your sins to God every single day. *As much as possible, create a daily routine. *Pray and read the Bible with your family daily. *Go to bed at the same time every night so your body will become regulated to your schedule. I know routine is boring and strictly out of style nowadays. We live in a pleasure-mad, fast paced, entertain-me-or-I-will-die world. Television, movies, sports; our whole existence is based on what will entertain us next. God forbid we would ever be bored; or not be busy; or have to do anything monotonous; or not be able to just 'shoot from the hip' every day and do whatever we feel like. It seems to me, the lack of routine in our daily lives is the number one killer of consistency and Christian growth, and it keeps us on a spiritual roller coaster. Let's begin this week to work on daily living and routine, and next week we will share more about consistency and discipline.
