Family News December 15, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave Shaner Have you ventured into our website lately? Steve Taylor has done an outstanding job in putting this together. In it you will find information about the various ministries of this church, sermons on line, a joke of the week, mission updates, and links to other church sites. A new feature that has been added recently is the DGChurch discussion board. This is a way of starting some friendly discussions online to see what others in the church here think about Biblical or even other topics. I say other because one of the topics is whether your preacher should grow a beard or not! It gives you the chance to vote on this. The poll instantly gives you up to date results. I would like to encourage you to visit our website. It makes a great communication tool and serves as advertisement to others about the church here.I would like to show you a written response to one of the e-mails we received in the office here most likely via the website and not from one of our local members. It was unsigned but I am publishing my response because of the topic and the nature of the letter. My response was not written in anger but simply shows how labels are so easily placed upon people. First, I will publish the e-mail and then my response. 'are you liberals?? Do you believe in music in worship?? in one of your sermons I read this...."In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Is this saying its ok to be angry?? is this not a direct contradiction to the word of God?? In the King James its written....Be ye angry and sin NOT... meaning we are NOT to be angry or sin!!! Now I am really confused... why are we to be angry?? Please reply!!'Dear Sir, I normally don't respond to unsigned letters. I realize that this is an old e-mail, but I will respond briefly. Yes, I am a liberal. The Bible holds up the example of the Corinthians for their liberality. (I Corinthians 16:3) The Bible also teaches that we are to be liberal givers and liberal in our encouragement of one another. ( II Corinthians 8-9 - KJV) Yes, I do believe in music in worship. The scriptures teach that we should sing to one another (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:16) and that is very acceptable music to God which is the only form of music that I practice. The Bible says in Mark 3:5 (King James Version) that Jesus "... looked around about on them with anger..." If Jesus could do this, so could I. In Ephesians 4:26, in the verse that you quoted, the King James version, which is an English translation, you left out the comma. The translators evidently felt in the placing of that comma that the word "not" applied to the sinning rather than the being angry. If it was to apply to both there should be no comma. Jesus, in my opinion, seemed to be angry on two distinct occasions (Mark 3:5 & John 2:13-17) - when others were mistreated and when God was mistreated. He never got angry when he, himself, was mistreated, which is normally when man gets angry. A cursory reading of Matthew 23 also seems to show Jesus expressing anger although he certainly could have said these things without a violent outburst. Anger is listed in Colossians 3:8 as something that we must rid ourselves. Although it may sound picky, there is a difference in expressing anger and being an angry person. Anger can be expressed but it needs to always be under control. Being an angry person is who you are and is a part of your character. This, I feel, is sinful and destructive. There are different words for anger in the Greek. I would encourage you to look those up. Thank you for your inquiry. If you quote anything I say in this letter to anybody else, please do so in its entirety. I wish you had left your name. Please do so from now on. Thank you. Sincerely, Dave Shaner Let's always make sure that we are quoting the Bible correctly and that we consider the context when we determine its meaning. Let's also do all things in love as we encourage one another day after day. HAVE A GREAT WEEK !! She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. -Matthew 1:21

Core Values There's a great deal of talk today about defining a church's core values. But it is a mistake to think that we create our values in a vacuum. The truth is we discover them by looking back.....all the way back, not just to the restoration, but all the way to the beginning of the church on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ, and to the personal ministry and teachings of Jesus.Just as the people of Israel looked to the past to rebuild their values, we must look back to our roots to discover and rebuild the values of the Lord's church.....his values. Remember when you are not sure where you are going, look where you have been. Winston Churchill once said, 'The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see.' It is an awesome thought that by looking back to the cross, we can see all the way to heaven....and go there, if we follow the path defined by the core values Jesus established. I would not suggest that we turn backward, or move backward, but only that we look backward to be sure the path we are following is the same path the first Christians walked. When Australia was a new nation, its leaders established a crest to represent their newly formed country. Two animals stood one on each side of the crest - the kangaroo and the emu. These two particular animals were chosen because of a unique common characteristic. While both animals can turn their heads to glance backward in order to get their bearings, they always move forward. In other words, kangaroos and emu look back but leap forward. We must do the same: look back to be sure of our values and leap forward taking hold of the future. It is an interesting concept - we live life forward by understanding it backward.
