Family News October 20, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerGuest Editorial: Dan & Katherine Cooper will be conducting a Friendship Evangelism Seminar for us on November 3-5. We have been viewing his videos during the adult Sunday Bible class this quarter. He will be a guest columnist for the next few weeks. 'Golfing Fanatic' The 1986 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is history. Along with millions of other Americans, I watched part of the final round on television. However, unlike most others, I watched part of the U.S. Open in person. Yes, I was there on that rainy Thursday that the U.S. Open began. My brother, brother-in-law and I arrived at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club about 9:30 A.M. From my home in Pitman, NJ that was a five hour drive. The course was beautiful! We followed Ben Crenshaw, Craig Stadler, and Greg Norman for 18 holes. Then the rain and cold became too much for us. We left long before many of the golfers had even hit their first tee shot. At one point, as we stood in the pouring rain, I said to my brother Jim, 'If we'd ask people to do this for religious reasons we'd be called fanatics or crazy.' The fact is that just to watch the U.S. Open, thousands of people; 1) Paid $30 per day, 2) Drove hundreds of miles, 3) Drug themselves out of bed hours earlier than they normally would, 4) Endured the cold, wind and driving rain, and 5) Tolerated crowds of avid golf spectators. You talk about sacrifice....people were willing to make some pretty significant sacrifices to watch the U.S. Open! All golfers understand that kind of commitment. Now, what kind of sacrifices are you willing to make for your God? How deep is your commitment. 1) Will you spend $30 a day for Him, even $30 a week? 2) Will you drive dozens or hundreds of miles for Him? 3) Will you get up early or go to bed late for Him? 4) Will you endure uncomfortable weather conditions for Him? 5) Will you tolerate crowds of people for Him? Scripture quotations such as 'A friend loves at all times', 'There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother', and 'Do not forsake your friends' remind us of the importance God places on friendship. Abraham was called a friend of God. Jesus often made reference to his friends. He even called Judas a friend. We live in a much too busy society where people don't have time to truly be friends, and yet psychologists tell us how desperately we all need a friend. I believe basic Christianity calls on us to take time for friendships and be the best neighbors, the best friends in our communities. How could I say I am a good friend and not tell my friend about Jesus? - Dan CooperOh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Psalm 8:1
Getting to Know You Better Two of your shepherds with the church here are now meeting on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. with a different family each week in an effort to better meet your needs. They will be getting your input and offering ways in which you will be able to get involved in the work of the Lord's church. So........ when you are called, welcome their invitation as they want to serve you. They are starting with the newer members, but if you would like to meet sooner, please contact the office. Astoria - Coat Give Away Jim & Diane Rude at the Astoria church are asking for donations of coats and blankets to provide warmth to those in need. There is a box in the lobby for your donations. For more information please see Betty Rude.Shepherd's Corner Have you made plans to attend the Friendship Evangelism Seminar on November 3-5? This is one of those great opportunities we have to learn of and encourage each other to reach out to others with God's love. The elders want to encourage each of you to make plans to be there. One of the best ways for us to grow together as a family is to work together in evangelism. Some have asked, 'Aren't we doing friendship evangelism now?' We may be. But wouldn't you want to know if there is something else we could do to be more effective? Dan and Katherine Cooper are coming to share with us an effective way of teaching and sharing God's love. -The Elders Baby Shower This afternoon ladies you are invited to come share the excitement of a baby shower for Patty Welter, hosted by the ladies of Post Falls Bible Study Group. Thank you for allowing us to share a Spanish Fiesta with many of you on Saturday night. We hope the food wasn't too spicy, the music wasn't too loud, and our efforts to be waiters and waitresses were not too bumbling. We had a fun time and hope we were an encouragement to you as you are to us. May we continue to grow together, in love, in Christ, as we love and serve one another. 'Cider Press' Youth Rally was an enjoyable and encouraging weekend for the thirty teens and three adults from here who were able to attend. We joined some 300 others for a wonderful time of fellowship, study of God's word, and devotion to God. Thank you John Simpson for being a chaperone and for taking my place as the bus driver. That made it possible for me to use road time sharing and talking with the kids. And thank you Mallory Jaynes for being the girls' chaperone. I know they appreciate you, as I do.

Thanks! CCS CORNER -School News Praising God by Dan Dupey The year at CCS is progressing! We have students achieving things they thought were unattainable, memory verses flow with ease on most of our Fridays, and Bible classes reveal exciting truths to students in all of our classes. We are very busy with many activities for God! We are thankful to have a great secretary that can initiate and delegate! She has that tender heart, giving attitude, and ambitious character that Jesus often talked about. Thank you Jennifer! We appreciate all your concern for the progress of the school! We are getting volunteers for our areas of student need. Whether it is listening to someone read, reading to someone, showing what 2 + 2 really is, or helping a student spell a word correctly, our tutoring people are a great asset to CCS. We appreciate the extra singing times we have with Mike Reeves on Thursday mornings. This is so much fun for Mike and ALL of us! We also hope to have a short singing class for our Jr. High students with Mike as their director. We celebrate God each day. I mean, we do that right here on site. As Christians, we should feel fortunate to be able to speak and act....in HIS STEPS each day. This should move us, excite us, and motivate us each all day as we work through the obstacles that greet us. How exciting to praise God in so many ways! The wisdom and doctrine of Scripture teach us that the experience of celebrating God is the 'CORE'.....yes, the CORE of worship! So, we must start with a grateful heart....a Christ-like heart....an attitude of I am here for YOU. I care about you. I want to help you today. I want you to succeed. I want to encourage you. I am smiling because of YOU. As we rejoice before the Lord, as we serve Him, as we enter into the Love that surrounds our days, as we give thanks to Him for His Kindness and Faithfulness, we celebrate God. How does your day begin? How does it end? Who do you rely on? Who do you praise? Are you leaning on Him or are you leaning on what the 'world' has to offer. True happiness comes from leaning on God each step of the way!
