Family News October 6, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerWe were very pleased to be able to have Diane Rude and Anna Crump deliver some great lessons for the Ladies Fall Fellowship over the weekend. There were ladies from many congregations throughout the Northwest. We especially appreciate all of the men that helped to set-up and take down for the weekend as well. A special thanks goes to Jean Grow along with a host of others who have done such a wonderful job of organizing this event each year. It is also great to be able to have Dr. Jerry Rushford with us today. Jerry is the director of church relations with Pepperdine University. He has also directed the Pepperdine lectures for the past 20 years. He is a very prolific writer and preacher. He has contributed greatly to us being able to gain a clearer understanding of our heritage. If you did not get the opportunity to purchase one of his books, please see the office, and we can give you further information as needed. We hope you visit our web site frequently. From there you can receive valuable information about what is going on in the Dalton Gardens church, as well as links to other valuable church sites. You can also listen to all of the sermons delivered here. We have switched to a different Web host. The name, daltongardenschurch.org has changed to simply dgchurch.org. Along with more web space, it also allows for an e-mail address for any in the church who would like one. If you would like to use a church e-mail address, you can still receive all of your e-mail through this one single address no matter who your Internet Service Provider is. There is no cost to have a church e-mail address. Each person could have an address such as, 'larrygrow@dgchurch.org' Everyone would be able to quickly send a message to anyone in the church. Steve Taylor will be collecting names of those who would like to participate. You will be able to provide a password. This procedure is now complete. If you would like to participate, simply sign the list at the kiosk. Be sure to let Steve Taylor know what a great job he does with, not only the web site, but also the audio-video ministry. Have a Great Week! Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. - Hebrews 12:1-2
Guest Editorial: Dan & Katherine Cooper will be conducting a Friendship Evangelism Seminar for us on November 3-5. We have been viewing his videos during the adult Sunday Bible class this quarter. He will be a guest columnist for the next few weeks. What's Happening in America Today with Regard to Soul-Winning? Win Arn, a church growth specialist, has calculated the number of all Protestant groups in America has declined by 9.5%, in the same time that the national population has increased by 11.4%. Roman Catholic seminaries are desperately short of the candidates that they need to fill their priesthood quota. (Down as much as 50% over one generation ago.) Put another way; in 1900 there were 27 churches for every 10,000 people. In 1950, this had slipped to 17 churches for 10,000 people. Today, it has declined to only 12 churches for every 10,000 Americans and the decline apparently continues. Obviously, one reason for fewer churches is that existing churches are becoming larger. The 'little country church' era is gone- at least for the east coast! But there are obviously other reasons for the decline ... like secularism, humanism, and (as one fellows has said), 'Don't forget the rheumatism!' What should we do? We must continue to reach out. We must teach. We must develop relationships with the lost. Studies indicate that Americans are not as interested in RELIGION as there are in RELATIONSHIPS. Will you share the Good News of Jesus with an unchurched friend? Will you communicate the love of Jesus? - Dan Cooper 'A Spanish Fiesta' Senior Saints, you are invited to the annual 'Keenage Banquet' hosted by the Dalton Gardens Youth Group. You will be served and entertained in the small auditorium from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, October 19th. Please come and let us serve you, and share an evening of fun and fellowship with you. Please RSVP the church office by Oct. 16th. Help for the 'Wee Ones' We are looking for volunteers to help with 'Wee Worship' (bible hour for 2 & 3 year olds). If you are willing to teach or help for one month each year, please contact Jennifer Rude at 683-1634. Thanks! Shepherd's Corner Have you hugged your child today? Do you remember that slogan which was posted on walls, billboards, bumpers, etc. It was one of these slogans that made you stop and think. That is good. We need to stop and think. Then we need to stop and thank. To thank God for our children. To thank God that we can hug them, and to love them. Our children are a blessing to us, 'a gift of the Lord,' as we read in Psalm 127. As with all gifts we need to treasure them. God expects us to nurture and train our children. To teach them of God's Word, to impress it on their hearts (Deut. 11:18-19). We need to be teaching our children at our homes, as we walk with them, as we sit with them, at night, and in the morning. To nurture and train our children's spiritual lives. They need to hear this in our words, and they need to see this in our lives. An excellent way to help us teach our children is to bring them to Sunday morning Bible class. We have a superb educational program that is directed by Arrty Rude and Mike Reeves. They assist the many wonderful teachers we have who love to teach and share God's word. This provides a wonderful opportunity for your children to grow and develop relationships with other children who are learning about God. This also provides you with an opportunity to study God's Word in the adult classes, or to even teach or assist in teaching. -The Elders Magi Project - Christmas Boxes For KidsWe need all of the supplies for the Christmas boxes turned in by October 20 and we will pack up the boxes on Wednesday, October 23 right after Bible study class in the small auditorium. Mike's Memos TEACHING CHILDREN TO WALK WITH GOD I've been sharing some tips for parenting which came via another church bulletin, and which offer some excellent advice. Last week we talked about younger children, this week............ Six Tips for parenting Preteens / Adolescents Puberty - Nothing shakes up a household quite like it. From age 10 to 14 your child is transitioning into physical adulthood-and consequently he is edging away from you and toward independence. Adolescents respond to relationships, and parents still top the list despite what they have been told. It is a tricky road to maneuver through; tightening your grip, though sometimes necessary, is sure to backfire. The following tips may help you navigate this age. 1) Model Christianity in your life. Be sure they can see in your life what you want to see in theirs. Let them see Jesus in you. 2) Teach them how to find answers for themselves in the Bible. Somewhere between age 10 and 14 kids need to make a decision for Christ. This, to be scriptural, must be a personal relationship with Christ based on an understanding of and obedience to His will, and it should be at least the beginning of a growing faith. The relationship and the commitment that goes with it may have its foundation in the faith and teaching of others...parents, grandparents, ministers..., but its stability and growth depends on the child's ability to find it, in God's word, for himself. 3) Get involved with them in a dynamic, God-centered youth ministry. In this environment your middle school/ junior highers can develop healthy friendships with peers and other adults while gaining autonomy in their faith. It will afford them many opportunities for spiritual growth as well as a safe place to just be the kids they still are. 4) Help them begin to discern between the world's 'truth' and God's unchanging truth while still under your guidance. The world has decided that there is no absolute truth. Christians, however, recognize that God's word is truth.... ....absolutely and unchangeably, no matter how people may gray the lines. It is imperative that adolescents begin to personally assimilate that truth into their live. 5) Listen and talk more without having an agenda. This will help keep your relationship and the lines of communication open. 6) Reflect God's love, forgiveness and mercy. Reflect God's love, forgiveness and mercy. Reflect God's love, forgiveness and mercy.
