Family News June 2, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerA special thank you to all those who donated to the Manna International Fund. This is a ministry under the oversight of the Redwood City church in Redwood City, California. They have been supplying needed food, clothing, and medical supplies to many 3rd world countries. They also have been able to dig many water wells supplying fresh water in many countries. They are doing a good work and we ask that you remember them in your prayers. If anybody was not able to participate in the special collection for them and would like to still have that opportunity, you may drop your donations off in the office. In conjunction with that, we have also encouraged you to consider fasting for one day or at least one meal. This is simply to enable us to focus our minds on benevolence and to spend some extra time in prayer. As Americans, we normally do not have to worry about where the next meal is coming from. My children have let me know if they have to wait longer than normal for a meal. Cries of 'I'm starving' have been heard because of simply not being at home at the supper hour. It is very difficult for us to understand the plight of those in other worlds who do not have the pantries that we do. God has blessed us so much. This exercise on fasting allows us to express out gratitude for His countless blessings and to remind ourselves of our own obligations. Galatians 6:9-10 states, 'Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.' Sometimes we do tire when doing good, but simply count your blessings, and help to make someone else's load a little lighter. You will continue to receive blessing upon blessing if you do so. Don't forget the congregational meeting next Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. We try to have these once every 3 months. This meeting will give us some vital information as well as give everyone an opportunity for suggestions. Your input is valued and we appreciate the work that everyone does for the Lord. We will follow this meeting with a barbecue meal together. Let's all be here for this! Have a Great Week!! 'Even now,' declares the LORD, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' - Joel 2:12
Congregational Meeting & BBQ There will be a congregational meeting and barbecue on Sunday June 9, at 3 pm. Make your plans to be present as vital church family information is discussed and fellowship is enjoyed. The following are requested items to bring from each Bible Study Group. If you are not currently a part of a group, feel free to bring any item. Buns/Chips & Dips
Condiments Side Dishes/Salads Desserts Each time we have a congregational meal, a group will be scheduled for clean-up. The teens will take their turn first, and I know they will do a great job. Who Will Benefit from the Stephen Series? The Stephen Series, for which Dalton Gardens church of Christ will soon begin training, benefits many others besides those who receive care of their Stephen Ministers. The Stephen Ministers grow greatly as they learn about helping others. They learn about themselves. As the hurting members of our congregation grow stronger through this caring ministry, the whole church is built up and made stronger. And, of course, we all can have the confident knowledge that when the pains of life come our way, someone will always be there, ready to care for us, to bring God's love to us in a special, personal way. Perhaps God is calling you to be one of these caring, committed servants who offer His love to those who are hurting. Help for the 'Wee Ones' Our church provides some wonderful guidance for our 'Wee Ones', and help for the parents during Sunday morning worship. We appreciate Nancy Litterell's leadership in this program. Now she needs help. Please call her and volunteer to help her out. She would like to schedule different helpers for 1 month at a time. Call 623-5079. Shepherd's Corner This past month, we have had an opportunity to serve God and today is the culmination of that opportunity. That opportunity is provided by Manna International. We have had an opportunity to save money each day to bring for a special collection today. Today we are asked to fast one meal and to donate that money also for this special contribution. This special contribution will then be used to help out others in third world countries. We are also asked to remember this in prayer today. Won't you join us in this opportunity. - Dave Bruner for the EldersPrayer Trio It has been five months since we began our prayer trio ministry. I trust that all of you have been praying daily for the other families in your group. It has been exciting for me to watch people meeting and getting to know one another, and very encouraging to see God answering our prayers. If you have not been participating in this you are really missing out. Make it a priority to spend time in prayer. Find your time and place and just talk with God. When we began this prayer trio process, we thought we would keep the same groups for one year. After some time to experience the effects of our praying, the prayer ministry leaders would like to shuffle the groups at the six month mark. Watch for more news and new families to pray for around July 1.- Scott Rouse for the Prayer Ministry American Cancer Society's Relay for Life - July 19th-20th We are putting a team together for this year's relay.
