STUFF     Dave Shaner

Be sure to be here this Thursday evening for the National Day of Prayer session. We appreciate all that participated in the leader selection process. Keep everyone in your prayers as the elders meet and discuss the willingness and role of prospective leaders. They will be providing a final list for your approval soon.

Today, we officially kick off the start of our Stephen Ministry. Some of you may be asking exactly what this is. I prefer to think of this as a people helpers ministry. The name Stephen Ministry is taken from Acts 6 where Stephen was one of the seven that was appointed to oversee some widows that were in need. The setting may have changed, but people still have some very real needs. God has placed in our hands the responsibility of ministering to people such that we can display the love of Christ and lead people to a closer walk with God. The Stephen Ministry is a comprehensive and dynamic training program that equips people to provide confidential and distinctively Christian one-on-one care to persons who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances. Anna & Ralph Crump and Dave Bruner will be trained at an upcoming special seminar in Seattle on how to meet people's needs. They will in turn be qualified to train all who desire to become a Stephen minister here.

In the long view of things, all that matters are people. We spend so much energy in the pursuit of things that don't matter. People matter to God and people need to matter to God's children. One thing that we need to be wary of is slipping into the mode where other people become a hassle for us and thus we disengage ourselves from them. What if Jesus had taken that approach? Nothing good ever comes easy. After leading many people to Christ, the scriptures say of Paul and Barnabas, 'They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples.' Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. 'We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.' It is still worth it!

Have a Great Week!!

'The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

- Luke 4:18-19

National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer will be this Thursday, May 2. President Reagan established this date by special proclamation in 1988. The Dalton Gardens church will be having a special prayer service this Thursday evening from 6 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. We have invited the community to come and pray with us. Bring your friends. To encourage attendance, we have switched our normal Wednesday Bible Study time to Thursday where we will be participating in the Prayer session. There will be no Wednesday evening Bible study this week only.

After the National Day of Prayer session, we would like to encourage everyone to stay for the Coeur d'Alene Christian School Talent Show which starts at 7 p.m.

Why the Stephen Series?

Dalton Gardens has begun participating in the Stephen Series, a program that equips people to do caring ministry. Why the Stephen Series? The Stephen Series trains people in the basic skills necessary for helping others. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential learning, people learn everything from how to be an effective listener to specific techniques for ministering to grieving people. Our congregation will reap many, many blessings through our involvement in this ministry of care.

Shepherd's Corner

Thank you church for your participation in the selection process for Elders and Deacons. We thank you for your prayerful input. The current elders are now in the process of conducting interviews with the men you selected that are full of the Spirit and have a servant heart for ministry. We hope to present the names of those willing to serve, to the congregation soon. Please continue your prayers on behalf of this important process and the church.

Baby Shower

There will be a baby shower for Kathy Taylor on Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the small auditorium. Come for brunch and games! Kathy is registered at Target. If you'd like to contribute to a larger gift, please talk to Katrina Swaim, Shari Swaim, or Jennifer Rude. Kathy is having a boy!

Attention Ladies:

It is only 5 months now until our 2002 Ladies Fall Fellowship, October 5, 2002. We will have an important meeting next Monday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Jean Grow, 5905 Pleasant Way (off Dalton between 95 and Ramsey).

We need to start forming our committees and planning now. We will be making final decisions on the theme and topic which will be from the idea of our being a light in the world. So be thinking along that line and come with your suggestions for topics, titles, scriptures, etc. Everyone's help is needed to make the day bring glory to God and encourage one another.

Please plan on attending and being involved, whether heading a committee, or just being a helper, you are needed. Be thinking how you want to help. Remember the purpose of the Ladies Fall Fellowship:

1. To involve our ladies in working together to serve the Lord and draw closer to one another.

2. To be an encouraging, uplifting day and growing time for our sisters as Christian women.

3. To be a non-threatening time to share Christ with our non-Christian family and friends.

4. To bring glory to God.

See you at the meeting!

Mike's Memos

The Aim Team, Anna, Ivan & Mike, from Siberia is back! Thank you for your prayers and thoughtfulness while we were away. It is SO good to be back home.

Our God is so awesome. With his strength and his wonderful Spirit, we were able to touch the lives of people on the other side of the world. I was able to spend lots of time with Ivan (Yvonya) and the Barnaul youth group, as well as attending Ivan's classes at the preaching school and one of Anna's sessions with the ladies.

On our way home, we were also able to spend some time with Gary Jackson and Lubbock AIM students in the church in Moscow. It was a time of mutual encouragement for all.

Maybe I will share more later, but the bulletin is waiting for this article so..........just thanks again from the three of us for the wonderful opportunity to be a part of serving God in Russia.

'Return To Sender', the Tri-Cities Youth Rally is May 3 - 5. That's next weekend!! I hope you are planning to go. We will leave Dalton Gardens church of Christ about 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Be ready!!!

Senior High Spring Formal is planned for May 17th. This is for our 9th - 12th grades and their dates. We will have a special formal dinner as only Warren & Lynn Brown can do. Make your plans to attend.

There will be a work day at Camp Prince's Pine May 10-12. Bring your tools and help us get the site ready for the summer camps.

Jabulani Africa......

It will be an opportunity to honor heroes of the faith in Africa, both Americans and Africans as well and for praying, learning and planning for the future of African missions.

The event is being hosted by Richland Hills church of Christ in Fort Worth, TX July 31 through August 4, 2002. More information can be read in the material posted on the missions bulletin board, just outside the auditorium.

CCS CORNER - School News

A Solid Foundation Is Required!

Are you ready? A job may have opened up in a special field that you wanted. Are you ready?

An opportunity has opened up for a trip you had always wanted to go on. Are you ready? There is this special person in your life. You care so much about this person. You have spent a great amount of time with them. And, now you want to join together in marriage. Are you ready? Your child has reached that special age. It is time to be enrolled in school. Are you ready? What is to be expected? It has been said that we always need to be ready (In season and out of season). I have had the opportunity to discuss the necessity of quality education at an early age to many parents over the past few months. I have reiterated many times the importance of a quality foundation. This foundation we give our children at the ages of 3, 4, and 5 will be everlasting or crumble over time. Firmness for what is right is as important as compassion when one has done wrong. Our children need to be ready for the world. They will enter the world more confident and capable with their armor on and their swords sharpened. An environment of love, understanding, devotion, and discipleship builds a student's solid foundation!

Coeur d'Alene Christian School is based on the foundation of Christ. Jesus taught his disciples many things in preparation for what was to come. There were many things that they did not understand at the time, but Jesus gave them the foundation they would need to carry them through. We are that 'second' family the student so often needs. We are the extra arm, the comforting hug, the open ear, the understanding mind, and the prayerful leaders for our students at CCS. As we plan for the new year and prepare for our classes, we are excited about teaching your children!

-Dan Dupey
