Family News March 31, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerIf you are visiting with us today, we would like to welcome you. Today is a day that most Christian traditions have celebrated as the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. The actual day in the calendar was set by man but what it represents was set by God. Sin is what separates man from God. Sin is not just an innocent act of indiscretion but an act of rebellion against a holy God. We do not like to think of it like that, but the sheer number of times that we have violated God's will indicate that we have had a tendency to trivialize sin. All have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23. Jesus came as a gift from God whose stated purpose was to seek and save the lost - Luke 19:10. The apostle, John, said that the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work - I John 3:8. It is because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ that the devil has been ultimately defeated. Satan still likes to have his say, but the outcome of the war has already been determined for all who exhibit faith in Jesus Christ. Many celebrate the Lord's resurrection once a year, but New Testament Christians remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ all year long. Have you experienced the power of the resurrection? I am not talking about what happens when you pass from this earthly existence, but am referring to what God can do for you and through you right now! When a person is united with Christ in his death, he/she is united with Him in His resurrection and His ongoing life. This is not to be viewed as a future event as much as a present reality. The very day that any person becomes a Christian, God infuses into Him a new life. It changes the way we look at the world, at each other, and even ourselves. It affects for the good the way we work and the way we play. All this does not result in a restricted lifestyle as much as one that is a liberated lifestyle. In Christ, we are now free to love and serve one another resulting in great contentment that the world can never know. Yes, all this and more starts with what God accomplished through Jesus on the cross and via the grave. Have a Great Week!! For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance : that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, ... - I Corinthians 15:3-4

Shepherd's Corner Have you ever had the flu? I'm talking about the kind you have, and everything hurts. Your back hurts, your knees hurt, your hands hurt, your head hurts, and on and on. It is an incessant, dull, throbbing pain in which there is no relief. You try to move yourself to relieve the pain, but in seconds it is back. You try a handful of pill (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol) to relieve the pain, but they don't work. You fall asleep from an exhaustion of this pain to wake up, and find that your still in pain and coughing now. While going through this I chuckled to myself as I thought about Job, and the pain he went through. Some people like to believe that God would have us experience this kind of pain so we can understand spiritual pain. I don't believe my God would do that. I do believe that my God would open my eyes when I suffer physical pain so that I maybe aware of a similarity to suffering spiritual pain. When we suffer spiritually we may not be aware of it initially. Satan does like to seduce us so that initially we rationalize our actions, and say that this feels so good and so right that it can't be wrong. Then this rationalization begins to creep in and soon we find ourselves in the midst of spiritual suffering and pain just as our physical body went through suffering and pain in the paragraph above. As your spiritual life suffers you go through hurt and pain also. An incessant, dull, and throbbing pain in which there is no relief. You try to mask the pain with a handful of pills (greed, stealing, affairs, alcohol, drugs). It dulls the pain initially, but it doesn't last. There is only one cure just like when you have the flu. The right medicine, the right nourishment, and time as your body overcomes the consequences of the flu. Our spiritual life needs the right medicine which comes through Jesus and the forgiveness we obtain through him. We need the continual nourishment of God's Word which we can have through study, prayer, and fellowship. And we need time. God forgives us immediately, but as humans we need time to overcome the hurt as a consequence of sin. - Dave BrunerJoin us this Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. at JB's Restaurant on Appleway for our weekly Prayer Breakfast Menu for Wednesday, March 27th :Turkey/Noodle Casserole, Corn, Salad, Rolls, Dessert Soup Kitchen/Pantry Item of the Week: Cheddar Cheese, Ranch Salad Dressing Calendar of Events April 2 - Prayer Breakfast 6:30 a.m. at JB's April 6 - 2 p.m. Russ & Jo Allen's Anniversary Reception April 7 - Dalton Gardens LTC Celebration April 9 - 25 - AIM Team in Barnaul, Siberia April 12 - 6:30 p.m. - Game Night in the Kitchen April 20 - CCS Auction at the Fairgrounds Prayer Requests Shari Swaim & Jennie Brown as they continue treatments for cancer. Mike's Memos Mosaics .....the NEW Generation - This is my brief summary of George Barna's critical research into America's people and a look at what's coming with a view to future youth ministry. New book - Real Teens A generation is traditionally accepted as a span of approximately 15 to 20 years. The Mosaics, sometimes called Millennialists, are the youngest of the five generations that co-exist within America today. There are the Seniors (born in 1926 or earlier); the Builders (1927-1945); the Baby Boomers (1946-1964); the Baby Busters (1965-1983); and the Mosaics (1984-2002). While the Builders had devoted themselves to fostering a nation of prosperity and civility, Boomers were intent upon redefining authority and burying tradition. They signaled the end of predictability, fairness, and the notion of the common good, with a complete disregard for the prevailing cultural norms, among other things. The Busters built upon that 'wonderful' heritage, taking everything a step further. They took pride in sloppy work habits, and a musical genre filled with anger, sarcasm, independence, and dissonance. Instead of shaggy hair, unkempt beards , and bandanas, Busters opted for the more permanent signs of cultural contempt in tattoos and body piercing. They ushered in the New Age spirituality that has affected every component of American society. So where do we go with the Mosaics? What do we know? What can we expect? Not only will they be the most numerous, by far, they will be the longest living, best educated, wealthiest, and most wired / wireless. They have unpredictable, idealistic, impractical, seemingly inconsistent values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. They are an unusual conglomeration of views and ideas. Though spiritually savvy, they are predominantly un-churched, and will provide the church with a fertile, but difficult, population for evangelism. As a mosaic is a combination of small pieces, the new generation is mosaic because their..... *lifestyles are a combination of traditional and alternative activities; *thinking style is nonlinear, 'just whatever' *relationships are racially integrated and fluid *core values are cut-and-paste...feelings, facts, principles, experiences and lessons; *information source is the internet; *and their basis for spiritual substance are a blend of multiple-faith views and religious practices. Putting all this together results in a mosaic that will challenge and change us and our culture in almost every dimension of life. I believe that Barna's research provides us with a link between the past, present and future. It helps us understand where our culture is going, and provides insight to guide us as we try in youth ministry, and in the church in general, to influence the young people of the mosaic generation. CCS CORNER - School News Beautiful Minds God has blessed us richly....He has given us children to guide in His ways.... Each day that I teach, I am amazed at what they say about life. Last week, I had the opportunity to teach the children from God's word....Isaiah 53:2& 3....We talked about God's plan and how He foretold that Jesus would not be desired for His beauty...What was desirable about Jesus? What attracted men to Him then and now...His great love...His enter beauty that shined in all the good He spoke and all the things He did.... There are days when I grow weary and everything seems to be challenge...Last week we closed school on Tuesday....Four teachers and many students had the flu/cold/bug...One day was not quite enough to recover...I am stronger now...but looking forward to spring break, just as the children are...Their bodies are full of energy and their minds are filled with thoughts of freedom in all the possibilities of what spring break has in store. I had a visitor last week. They were amazed at the creative writing of my first graders. Please visit our hallways and stop and read some of their original works...And visit us sometime...You will be our welcomed guest! -Teri Dupey Hot Doggies! Report from Eastern European Missions It pleases me to share with you that enough people participated in our $1 Million Sunday appeal this pastfall that we will be able to deliver Family Bible Bundles to 40,000 non-Christian Russian families who have requested them. Praise God for the fruit, which will undoubtedly come! Already, we have printed the Russian Children's Bibles, 'Newcomer's Guide to the Bible', and morality lessons in our Vienna, Austria facility and shipped these to St. Petersburg, Russia for distribution. Vienna reports that 40,000 Russian adult (Synodal) Bibles are currently being printed and should be completed next month. The remaining materials will be completed shortly and it is our target to have all deliveries completed by the end of this year. Congregations of churches of Christ across Russia and Ukraine are so excited about this project and the follow-up opportunities.
