Family News March 3, 2002 Short By STUFF Dave ShanerJust a reminder that the current Sunday morning adult Bible classes will be continuing for two more weeks. The next Sunday classes will be starting on March 24. There will be no classes on March 17 because of the MIQVAH youth rally. We will be starting the process of the selection of new elders and deacons April 7. One of the new classes will be a study of I & II Timothy, and Titus. We will start with what the scriptures say about elders and deacons in this particular study. After reviewing these sections of the books, we will then go back and have a textual study of the rest of the books. You can participate in the process right now by looking among the congregation for whom you think would make good leaders (which includes current leaders). Be sure to keep the entire elder/deacon selection process in your prayers. A healthy church requires both good leaders and good followers. What is most important however, are submissive attitudes on the part of all of us to God's will in our lives every day. Friend Day, Easter Sunday, is only one month away. If there is any one day that more people are likely to visit a church than any other day, it is the Sunday that is traditionally called Easter. Even though the scriptures do not identify it as a Christian holiday, the fact that so many do so, makes it a great opportunity for us to get the message of the risen Lord out. There will be about 30 of our teens and adults out of town that day for the LTC convention in Phoenix. It is all the more important for the rest of us to invite our neighbors to fill the house. Let's make this a great day. Who can you bring to church with you that day? Recent guests have been commenting on how friendly the church here is. I must agree. Jesus said, 'A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.' - John 13:34-35. Give your friends and relatives a chance to experience Christian love. Have a Great Week!! Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. Hebrews 12:14-15

This is one of those great truths taught by Jesus in a parable in Luke 18:9-14. A parable of two men. One who thought he earned his justification. The second one humbled himself, and asked God to forgive him and be merciful on him. Another great truth is in Matthew 6:9-15 where Jesus teaches his disciples to pray. In verses 14-15 he said to forgive others, and God will also forgive us. Sometimes I'm willing to forgive someone if they act the way I think they should. But that is not what God said. Thank God that he is merciful and patient with me. Thank God that he helps me to learn how to forgive. How about you? David Bruner Spring Quarter Ladies Class On Wednesday nights will begin with two sessions (March 6 & 13) with Anna Crump sharing about her missionary experiences in Africa. Jim & Janet Almond Mike's Memos Challenging insight from teens in Russia In recent e-mail communication with Levi Sisemore in Russia, I asked him to help me understand the likenesses and differences in American and Russian youth cultures. He shared the following: Honestly, when I'm in the States it seems so shallow that I shun all connection with "my" [American teen] culture. The Russians have had to face troubles at a young age and therefore do have a more serious outlook on life. For an American, the teen years are just so much fun-and-games. Russians, on the other hand, can sit down and behave seriously by age 12 (while their American counterparts can't wait to get back to the Nintendo). When I was in California, I gave some of the teenagers ten-ruble banknotes. The first question they asked was, "Could I get a pedicure in Russia with this much?" I told them that when a Russian gets a ten-ruble note (about 33 cents) they don't think about pedicures - they think, "What's the cheaper bread that I can buy with this?" The American teens thought that this was, "so sad." They then proceeded to talk about Brittany Spears. Somehow I just wasn't impressed. I do, however, realize that not all Americans are like that. But, we are so much of a materialistic nation that it is depressing to come back to the US now after being here for many years. I would say that this is the biggest (surface) difference in the teenage cultures: we (Americans) have things/stuff to entertain us, keep us busy; they (Russians) have themselves to keep each other busy. About two thirds of the population plays a musical instrument (usually guitar or piano); everyone knows how to play chess; everyone reads extensive amounts of Russian and foreign literature; they are, as a rule, "more cultured."Food for thought. 'Oh to see ourselves as others see us.' Thanks Levi It's only two weeks until......... MIQVAH 2002 23rd Annual Youth Rally 'Living The Dream of Jesus' March 15 - 17 ........
