Family News February 10, 2002 Our winter meeting with Joe Beam is underway. He will continue the series, 'Desperate for God', Sunday through Tuesday evenings. Even though the meeting has already started it is still not too late to invite and/or bring a friend to another session. Be in prayer during this time that our hearts will be open and receptive to God. Also ask God to lead us to others and guide others who need to know Him to us that we all may enjoy a saving relationship with Him. Another phase of the Prayer Ministry is off and running. A special Prayer Garden will be constructed over the next few months. The purpose of this is to provide a peaceful place for both the congregation and the community to be able to come and pray and/or study in a beautiful setting. Of course, anyone can pray any place any time. But, being able to provide a place to pray, may encourage prayer and may also get more people to actually pray. Rick and Janet Blanchard are leading this particular part of the prayer ministry. Several people have already been involved in the planning. The site of the garden will be on the northeast section of the church property on 4th Street. A sketch of the proposed garden will be available for you to view and to offer your ideas as well. A community prayer box will be on site as well, so requests for prayer can be picked up. Although some funds will be necessary for the completion of this project, we do not expect this to be very much. Much of the trees, shrubs, and landscaping will be donated. Anyone who wishes to help with labor or materials, be sure to contact Rick. Jesus would often go by himself to pray. His best known prayer took place in the Garden of Gethsemane. The disciples took notice of Jesus' prayer habits. They did not ask Him how to preach, lead singing, or teach a class, but they did ask him how to pray. They knew that Jesus' spiritual strength sprang from prayer. Albert Lemmons once said, 'Where there is much prayer there is much faith. Where there is little prayer there is little faith. And where there is no prayer there is no faith.' Prayer reveals the heart of God to the believer. God doesn't need to hear our prayers as much as we need to pray. Have a Great Week! This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord. Jeremiah 10:23-34
Elders available for shepherding: Desperate for God, Satisfying Your Soul's Deepest Hunger February 10-12 Joe Beam from Augusta, Georgia will be speaking for this series each evening, Sunday through Tuesday. Joe is also the author of Forgiven Forever and Seeing the Unseen. He is the president of Family Dynamics which trains leaders for the acclaimed His Needs, Her Needs seminars. Your faith will be strengthened by these presentations from the word of God. Lifeline of Hope Next Sunday, February 17, Jim Miller from Kalispell, Montana, will be preaching for our worship assembly and teaching our adult classes. Jim has been very involved in the development of the Lord's church in Eastern Russia. He is also very instrumental in helping to place homeless children into Christian homes. He will be sharing with us some of the exciting things going on in a country that is so open to the gospel. Shepherd's Corner In the beginning, when God created man and woman, they were profoundly different from all of the rest of His creation. They were distinctly human, definitely a part of that creation, yet distinctly spiritual in many ways. For permeating the very essence of each person was an element that was created in the "image of God". We underestimate the impact of that on our lives, because whether we realize it or not, we are driven by it's influence. It's as if a part of us that has that connection to God, that heritage, wants to be home. The trouble is, we often don't recognize the feeling as a yearning or hunger for God. Instead we strive to satisfy that hunger with worldly things, as if they can give us that final sense of fulfillment. Proverbs 13: verses 12 and 19 say, "a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." And, "A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul". Be filled with God, and be fulfilled. Mike Swaim Ladies Craft Night! Erwin* Thank You! Thank all of you, brothers and sisters, for your prayers and concerns for my eye surgery. It was another one of the many remarkable blessings that God, my Father always gives to me. -Russ Allen I just want to thank God for hearing my prayer, and the prayers of those others who prayed with me, for my sister in the birth of her son. It was a high risk pregnancy. Praise the Lord, mother and son are doing fine. In Jesus Name, Mike's Memos Warnings From God Before they entered the promised land, Moses told the Israelites, in effect: Stay true. Stand firm. Be distinct. Don't compromise. No idols. No intermarriage. Remember Jehovah. Obey him. Watch out for the signs of erosion! It wasn't long before the Hebrews forgot those warnings. They transgressed the covenant of God. They looked at God's laws, and they rearranged things. Can't you imagine their thinking? 'This seems pretty strict for Canaan life. It made sense when we were in the desert, but we've got to look at things more realistically now. A lot of what Moses said just isn't practical anymore. Our culture requires us to adjust here and be tolerant there. I mean, these Canaanite girls are not only attractive.....they look great! What's the difference if we really love one of them? We won't really forget about God.' So, they rejected the good, and embraced the bad. They slowly stopped listening to God. It all started with one or two shrug-of-the-shoulders compromises. One or two small decisions led God's people into so much sin, so much sorrow, so much suffering, and finally, a nation in exile. We, too, must pay attention to the first few steps down the slope. They often set in motion a series of events that lead to pain and destruction. We must not ignore God's warnings. Registration Forms should be in
