Family News January 20, 2002 The congregational meeting was very positive and some exciting things were shared with us by the elders. One is the 'Stephen Ministry.' This program trains members of the body of Christ to be able to be better people helpers. Ralph Crump has already been through the training but he along with some of our elders will be attending a conference in Seattle to be trained to teach others. Stephen was one of the men in Acts 6 who was selected by the congregation and appointed by the apostles to be a minister of mercy to the widows who were being neglected. The scriptures describe him as full of the Holy Spirit and faith. He has become a symbol of the kind of person needed to serve the church when people are in need. It is so easy when others are encountering difficulties in their lives to not know how to help. The Stephen Ministry trains Christians to help people. In Ralph Crump's words, 'See a need and fill it, and find a wound and heal it.' This training will not necessarily make one a certified counselor but will give you needed skills to just be a good listener, an encourager, and to know available resources to be of real help to those in time of need. You will be hearing more about this ministry in the coming weeks, but pray for its success and how we can all be better ministers for the Lord. The new budget was also revealed to us. Through some restructuring of our mortgage debt along with some prudent deacons in their planning, the goal of $4561 is a little lower than last year's goal. Brochures detailing this year's budget are available in the tract rack in the foyer. Of course, you may get any additional information or an accounting of spending any time from the Finance Ministry. We had a wonderful contribution the first week of January, but we were down a bit last week. We are about $80 from where we need to be. This is a small amount right now but over the course of the year, at this rate, the deficit can increase significantly. Be sure to purpose in your heart to the Lord what you will give and be generous knowing that the Lord will bless you so that you can be generous for other occasions as well. Have a Great Week!! Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints. - Philemon 1:7
Desperate for God, Satisfying Your Soul's Deepest Hunger Joe Beam February 10-12 We will be hosting a revival meeting February 10-12. Internationally-known inspirational speaker Joe Beam will be the guest speaker for this series. He is the founder of Family Dynamics, a nonprofit corporation using biblical truths to strengthen marriages and families. The goal of Family Dynamics is to honor our Lord by helping couples begin, build, and sustain better marriages and families. 'Our goal is not just to educate, but to change behavior. We teach people to actually apply what they learn.' -Joe Beam For fifteen years Joe served as pulpit minister for growing churches in Georgia, Indiana, and Alabama. Before heading Family Dynamics, he served as President of Change Dynamics International, a successful resource development and training development company that worked with clients including major retail chains, service companies, cable companies, banks, manufacturing companies, and hospitals. His client list included several companies that are within the ten largest in the world in their specific industries, such as Sears, United Artists, Heilig-Meyers, and Club Car. Since 1970, Joe has spoken to over two million people worldwide through personal appearances. He has been interviewed on many radio and television programs, including ABC's Good Morning America. Brochures and 'tickets' are available in the church office for you to help advertise this meeting by distributing them to your friends and business associates. Shepherd's Corner How many of you pray for God to lead you? If that is your prayer, what do you do when he directs you to serve or work in a certain area? When God speaks to us we have to be obedient and act according to his calling. Sometimes we may not particularly care for the task he may set before us. It may require us to get out of our comfort zone. If the truth be known, we will not grow spiritually unless we get 'uncomfortable.' But you know what...that is where God wants us, out front on the cutting edge. He wants us to trust him to see us through. So next time you feel him leading you...FOLLOW HIM!Scott Rouse Elders available for shepherding: This week - Larry Grow & David Bruner goi ng & growing,The Tweener's Retreat Today is the last day to sign up at the kiosk. The weather was beautiful, with heavy snow in the mountains most of the day Saturday. Sledding, snow boarding, tubing, and snowmobiling were lots of fun, but we also enjoyed the working hours cutting, splitting, carrying in and stacking about three cords of firewood. This supply should last through the Tweeners' Retreat, the Teens' Mid-Winter Retreat, and have some wood left for campfires at Bible Camps this summer. We played together and worked together. I appreciate John Simpson who led this retreat, Scott Rouse for his help, and all the guys who participated: James Graham, Garret Jaynes, Kurt Shaner, Scott Simpson, Charlie Batson, Adam Welch, Nathan Frisk, Chris Rouse, Austin Morse, and his friend, Rob. NORTHWEST BIBLE BOWL CHALLENGE Our 2nd Northwest Bible Bowl Challenge is only two weeks away. It will be hosted by the Richland congregation, and we hope to be taking three or four or even five teams to challenge others in the Northwest Region in their knowledge of Genesis 13 - 25. This is such an excellent way for our young people to learn scripture, and to enjoy the camaraderie of their Christian peers. Some parental direction and encouragement in these areas is certainly in order. We appreciate the good attendance we have had in our Wednesday Night Bible Bowl Class. Now we have a special opportunity to evaluate our progress. We will leave Dalton Gardens about 7am and return about 6pm Saturday, February 2.
