Family News November 11, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave ShanerOur meeting with Randy Harris was very well received and challenged us to be simply a Christian. One of the things that Randy preached about was the concept of undenominational Christianity. This idea is as appropriate now as at any time in history. In fact, most people now don't care about joining a particular church. Loyalties to the old institutions are a thing of the past. This is good news for God's people. We have been teaching this for a century and a half, but have always communicated it very well. To the average person, the churches of Christ are just one of many from which to choose. In fact, many churches have even adopted a circle the wagons and protect what is left approach. Is it possible to be just a Christian and still be loyal to God's church without becoming a part of the institution we know as denominationalism? Undenominational Christianity is simply to be a Christian and practice the scriptures without all the man made trappings that so often accompany religion. First century Christians lived in a culture against a backdrop of paganism. They did not have to deal with a denominational structure that is so prevalent today. They had to unite together to allow God to fulfill His purposes in them. We must do the same thing today. It does not involve compromising truth. But neither does not mean that all error will be eliminated. In fact, the purpose of grace is to cover our errors. Grace, for the Christian, covers both moral and doctrinal errors. At a preachers meeting, the question, 'Can we fellowship brethren in error?' was asked. One wise man answered, 'Are there any other kind?' We need to seek to follow God by keeping His Word. But none of us have absolute, perfect understanding. It is also important that we allow the scriptures to do their intended work - to lead us closer to Christ. It is very possible to be 'always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.' - II Timothy 3:7. Jesus said, 'You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, ...' - John 5:39. Study hard, practice what you learn, teach what you know, and trust God with what you don't. Have a Great Week!! And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8

Mike's Memos A recent Christian magazine article titled, 'Raising Balanced Kids in an Unbalanced World' began as follows: A teen fashion catalogue arrived in my mailbox, full of ads for chokers, very short tight skirts, baggy hip-huggers, and tight tank tops barely covering the model's belly. My daughter picked it up, took a quick look and threw it away. She sighed. 'I wish I didn't get that stuff.'What is it that causes some kids to see the devaluing effect of some fashions and fads, while others get caught up in their popularity? How do some Christian kids manage to develop a higher set of values, a self worth that causes them to be turned off by negative elements and stay balanced while buffeted by whirlwinds of peer pressure and the seduction of popular culture? Obviously, most fads and current fashions are harmless. Sometimes they're even good. But how do we teach our teens to make wise, Christian choices? It is certainly more than stuffing them full of rules. Nor is it allowing them to make their own rules, robbing them of the benefit of our experiences, having walked the same road they are now on. Good parents lead by example. Let them see your devotion to God.....your praying, scripture study, sharing, morality, integrity, forgiveness and your uncompromising commitment to the Lord and his church. Don't confuse them with spiritual inconsistencies. Be careful to display a Christ-like attitude. It's tough, but work hard to live the example of Christ before them, and always be quick to openly admit your failings and ask for forgiveness...theirs and God's. Let them see you make wise, Christian choices from the catalog of things your culture offers you.....your clothing, TV programs, movies, recreation, time and money management, always choosing a God centered prioritizing of your life. Teach them at home, and help them be a part of every opportunity to learn God's word. We live in a culture filled with sexual images, innuendoes and me-first attitudes that can drag kids away from God and family like a powerful ocean under-tow. But parents who will tirelessly, unselfishly follow God's direction in their lives, and teach and model that direction for their children, will raise wonderful kids who remain balanced in an unbalanced world. 'COME BEFORE WINTER' Our Fall Retreat at the cabins at St Maries for the whole youth group is next weekend, November 16th - 18th We will leave the church building at 5:00 pm. on Friday, and return on Sunday about 4:00 pm. Be sure to bring your Bible, a sleeping bag & pillow, towels & toiletries, etc., and a good attitude.
