Family News October 7, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave ShanerAre you involved in the 40 Days of Prayer? We have started, as of last week, the 'Survival for the New Millennium' 40 Days of Prayer course. Most of you received one in your mail boxes, but if you did not get one, be sure to see the office to get your copy. Even though we are a week into the program, it is not too late to pick it up and get started with us. Of course, our goal is to make sure that prayer becomes a regular daily habit with every Christian. This program simply enables us to concentrate for this period of time to help strengthen the church and your family. It is designed to carry us through our Fall Meeting with Randy Harris, which will be November 4-6. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1Thessalonians 5:18. The 2001 Ladies Fall Fellowship is now officially history. Actually, the event may be over, but the results will be long lasting. Some of the greatest results were seen in so many working together for a common goal. We appreciate Debbie Lynn & Kathy Shaner for speaking for the seminar. There were so many that worked on it that I could not begin to name them all, but all of you did a great job. We also appreciate Dennis Lynn, for preaching this Sunday. Dennis is the President of Cascade Christian College in Portland, Oregon. We have had many of our members attend Cascade, and graduates of Cascade have benefited the churches of the Northwest enormously. The elders and preachers, along with their wives will be meeting this weekend for a prayer and goal session. The Rudes' cabins at St. Maries will be the site. They will meet this Friday night and all day Saturday to share and to discuss the items you brought to their attention at the recent congregational meeting as well as future ideas. Pray that God's Spirit and his direction will be pervasive throughout the retreat. We appreciate the hospitality of Don & Betty and Eldon & Ruby for the use of their cabins on the St. Joe River. This will be followed up by an elders-deacons-preachers planning session soon after. We want to arrange a time when all of the deacons will be able to be there. Be sure to keep these sessions in your prayers. If anyone has any suggestions for what you would like to see the church involved in, be sure to see one of the elders or preachers. Have a Great Week!! 'Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.' Ephesians 4:15-16
Elders available for shepherding: This week - Scott Rouse & Don Rude.
MAKING CHILDREN MIND WITHOUT LOSING YOURS Dr. Kevin Leman New Adult Bible Class beginning Sunday morning, October 14th.
Where Will We Be When We Get Where We're Going? Randy Harris The Dalton church will be hosting a very special seminar November 4-6 with Randy Harris as our guest preacher. The theme will be on the outlook for the future of the churches of Christ in the 21st century. Although the scriptures are always the same, many of the methods of the church have changed over the years. To some this is very uncomfortable and represents a threat to their security. Others see it as a breath of fresh air and in keeping more with the times. Randy will address these from scripture and will help us to focus on God's will today. Randy is a professor at Abilene Christian University and is very much in demand all over the country. Be sure to make your plans to be here at each and every session. More details will be coming next week.
Forty Days of Prayer... promises of God's blessings for those who......1) Pray believing that God hears and answers
Elder's Corner Today is the Seventh Day of our Forty Days of Prayer as announced by our Brother Ray Rayburn last Sunday. To some it is an exciting addition to their daily prayers. To some it is a beginning of a daily prayer life. Whichever it is, it is a time of excitement. Ray gave us a Purple Booklet of Prayer (PBOP) to help us in our growth in prayer. God hears our prayers, and uses us to accomplish great things. I encourage you to pray specifically for our meeting with Randy Harris (November 4,5,6), and that great things will be accomplished. -David Bruner

Thank Yous! A big Thank You to everyone who helped with the Ladies Fall Fellowship, before, during and after. You all helped in ways too numerous to mention with your food, time, talents, and the big and little, upfront and behind the scene jobs. Not only were your participation and prayers appreciated but also our working together brought a closeness within the family and praise and glory to God. Thanks again for everything, Jean Grow In this wonderful church family, there are many special servants who quietly go about doing things for others, and for the family as a whole. One of those who serves so willingly, and often so quietly is Ken Neubauer. Recently Ken used his excellent carpentry/ cabinetry skills to build us a new set of nicely crafted stage stairs in the small auditorium. Thank you Ken!

Mike's Memos THE CONFUSING FACE OF CHRISTIANITY THESE DAYS..... It continues to come at us from every direction...even from our own circles. For years I have been hearing, in ever increasing volume, the praise, by Christians, of the value of 'Christian music'.....music set to the same kinds of rhythms, using the same kinds of screaming instrumentation, sometimes even visualized by the same kinds of bodily gyrations, etc., as hard rock, and heavy metal. 'But the value', as the arguments go, 'is in the words. At least our kids, and growing numbers of adults, are listening to spiritual messages.' Well, as a person with some musical training and skill, I know that the music itself is by far the strongest element in a song. It will either be carefully written and played/sung to enhance the words, or it will obscure them, as is the case in much of what is called 'Christian music' today. They are often further obscured by the rock concert like environments where they are most often performed. And a much more subtle devaluation of this genre is its commercialization. I know this is stepping on toes, and yes, I also know these things are not true of all popular Christian music. But I also know that Satan is doing a number on us today by confusing the face of Christianity in so many areas of our lives. He has a major foothold within the circle, and we are being duped. By this time some of you are asking, 'What has gotten Mike all riled up?' Let me share a little part of an article from Group, a youth leaders' magazine, about the mentality of praise. The article by Bryan Belknap entitled 'Shackled by Fear' addresses the problem of watering down the message of the gospel. Fear drives the media and the message in most Christian art. It may be more dangerous to our teenagers' faith than the secular media. Much of what is produced in the Christian art world is biblical in the sense that its reference point is the Bible, but it is unbiblical in the sense that it is dishonest about life. It doesn't reflect kids' reality - there's a 'God world' and a 'Real world', and the two rarely intersect. So we get kids who say they love God, and are doing all the things that we require for evidence of their faith (Bible study, prayer, service, outreach, leadership) but show little or inconsistent commitment. Much of Popular Christian music promotes a tiny diminished view of God's will, skillfully wrapped in a nice sounding message of unity of believers, promoted by a controlling media, bought by an often gullible audience, pressured by relentless peer pressure. I think we are being sold a bill of goods which is far more destructive than we realize. It is very subtle. The more we allow the blending of Christianity with the world, the compromising of God's values, and the watering down of God's expectations, the bigger Satan smiles. You know he's got to love it when 'Christians' don't know what Christianity really is.

A Note from Togo Dear Family and Friends, As Togo takes another 'leap forward' in the technological advances arena, they have informed us that we are to have a 'new' seven digit phone number. Thanks so much for staying in touch with us! We appreciate it very much! In His service, David, Becky, Hannah and Elijah
