Family News September 23, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner Last week was both very traumatic and very encouraging. Dealing with the aftermath of the tragic events taking place in our country has spawned a revival of patriotism and love for each other. So many times, when tragedy hits, people band together to create a unity that makes us much stronger as a people. The determination that is being displayed by President Bush and a united Congress must instill fear in the hearts of the terrorists and would be terrorists. God has given governments the right to dispense justice. Romans 13:4 says of government that "He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." That does not make all that governments do right, but it does mean that God has given them that responsibility. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future. Jesus said "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall." - Luke 11:17. Early Christians had to deal with terrorism. Sometimes it was subtle while at other times it was very open. Entire evil governments set their face against Christianity. But every time one was martyred, two more would rise to take that person’s place. When Jesus, Himself, was killed, I am sure that the Jewish leaders thought to themselves that they were finally rid of this man. Little did they know what kind of a movement they were contributing to. We exist today as a body, in part, because so many early Christians believed in the cause and were willing to die for it. Today, the church can learn some valuable lessons from the events that have taken place in our country. A united front will instill fear into Satan. Their will be division even within his own house. The kingdom of darkness will and already has fallen. This is a great opportunity for us to show the world the love of Christ. There are times in a person’s life where he/she is more open to Christ than at other times. This is one of those times. God really does cause all things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Let’s be thankful both for our country and our church. Let’s endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace while we band together to diligently work for Him. Have a Great Week!! "Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." Colossians 3:13-14

Mike’s Memos The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases As this sweet devotional song, taken from Lam. 3:22-24 suggests, the book of Lamentations is not a book of whining. It is a lament for the horrible spiritual condition of Israel and the resulting punishment. Jeremiah is dealing honestly and painfully with the hurt - self-imposed - because God’s people strayed from righteous living, failed to stand against wickedness, and ignored the warnings of the prophets. Right in the middle of his weeping, the writer expresses his confident belief that Yahweh is a God of steadfast love. Even the punishment of Israel was an expression of God’s love. In the final analysis, Lamentations is a magnificent call to realistic faith. How real is our faith? Are we awake and are we living righteously, standing against evil and heeding the warnings of the righteous? Our God, who revealed himself most clearly in Jesus Christ, is a faithful God who can always be trusted. Let’s be constantly demonstrating our faithfulness to him, and leading others toward better understanding of his will and a closer walk with him. TNT We plan to do some "outside activities" for the next few weeks while the weather is still nice.If any parents would like to host, plan , or chaperone one of these, please let me know. I would be thrilled to get some volunteers.

Is God’s Word Worth $30? SEPT. 30 - $1,000,000 Sunday! Over 22,000 families, from all over Russia, have already written asking for Bibles and Biblical literature. More are coming! They responded to the Bible programming on Nationwide Radio in Russia. They are hungry for God’s Word. They want something to live for and by. They want to teach their children. They want hope. They have asked and they are waiting... Eastern European Missions (EEM) has organized this effort to meet this need. Each $30 "Family Bible Bundle" thoroughly teaches a family God’s Word. How many families does your family want to reach? To help this effort, one may mark a check "For EEM Russian Missions" and place in collection, give to the church office, or mail P.O. Box 90755, Houston, TX 77290. $30 will feed your family for a meal - it will feed a family in Russia for eternity.

REPORT FROM SIBERIA To read full report - see mission board on wall at top of foyer. Jerry and Levi Sisemore returned to Barnaul in mid August. Pam stayed in California for several reasons, chief of which is that of employment, in order for family to have a financial base upon return from the mission field. She is living with her parents and the Lord provided for full time employment as a teacher in the public school system. Levi tells of life "missing mamma" ranging from how not to cook, digging potatoes, math studies and the joy of singing in harmony. He writes the Church in Barnaul has no history of singing in harmony. After 3 weeks of his instructing, they sang their first song in 4 part harmony: God Is So Good. Preaching school has 12 new student this fall. Student body comes from west of Moscow on the European side of Russia to Birobidzhan in the Far East of Asia. Jerry relates it is exciting to see the quality of students our Lord has given us. During his time in the states, there were baptisms in a nearby village. Two were baptized in the deaf ministry and another was immersed the night of his report. The building remodel is on going and, as in many construction efforts, progress has experienced additional legal requirements. Pictures are on the board of doors which had to be added for additional fire escapes and there is one of the interior walls. Perhaps in late March, there will be opportunity for persons from Dalton Gardens to be involved in the School and Church works in Barnaul for a short term missions experience. Anyone with interest, let that be known to Dave Shaner or Ivan Archer.
