September 2, 2001 Short ByStuff Dave ShanerIt was great to have two people give their lives to Christ when they were baptized. Baptism is an important anchor in the Christian faith that we need to continue to hang on to. Why? Simply because God's word says that it is essential for salvation. There are some trends in the "Christian" world that we need to be aware of. First is that more and more people are interested in simply going back to the Bible. This is awesome and what we have always advocated. However, like anyone else, it is easy to get trapped in your own traditions where we can read into the scriptures what we want rather than what God actually says. Regardless, in today's world, there is less dependence on manmade traditions and an increasing interest in a church going by the Bible only. A second trend I see which goes hand in hand with the 1st trend is that there is less reliance on denominationalism. No matter what a certain church teaches, if it has an undenominational appeal, people are attracted to it. People no longer want to attach themselves to a particular denomination. Once again, I see this as a positive. The Dalton Gardens church is, in its essence, an undenominational group of people committed to sharing the love of God and the teachings of the New Testament. However, is that how the community views us? It is easy for any group, regardless of what it claims to be, to become entrenched in its own ways, making it basically a denomination. That is why it is essential for us to constantly monitor ourselves to seek to not become like what we are against. A third trend is that most "undenominational" churches have deemphasized baptism. Ironically, many of these same groups are baptizing large numbers of people. Most of these groups tend to view baptism as an outward work of man. The scriptures look at it as a faith response to God's working in us at that moment. Baptism adds us to the body of Christ, spiritually circumcises us, causes us to be born again, grants us the gift of God's Holy Spirit, allows us to reenact the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and cleanses us of our sin. These items have often been ignored by many churches, but they do emphasize complete obedience to Christ. This is the highest motivation to be baptized and we need to continue to emphasize Jesus not only as Savior, but as Lord. Have A Great Week! "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God." - Colossians 3:1

Prayer Ministry - Important Meeting Those interested in the new Prayer Ministry are urged to be present for a meeting next Thursday evening, 7 pm, September 6, in the small auditorium. Prayer Ministry assignments, on a volunteer basis, will be made at this meeting. This may well be the most important and significant meeting we have had thus far. All interested in the life-changing ministry are invited to attend.
Thank You There are several people who have pitched in and helped to improve the building prior to the start of school. Opal and Fred Bonney did some sheetrock work in the small auditorium. Opal and Fred have now gone back to Albuquerque, but will be back in the Spring. Dave Posey taped and textured. Marci Nelson did a lot of prep work for tile in the basement while Jerry Riggs laid the tile. Dan DuPey, Teri DuPey, Sandy Simpson, Robin Utter, and Lynelle Dehlbom have worked very hard in sprucing up the classrooms. Pat Riggs also has worked countless hours in working all over the building. We appreciate their care of the facility and the love they show for the Lord. Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate them.

Mike's Memos NEW YOUTH GROUP BEGINNINGS....... Next Sunday, September 9th will be kick-off day for this year's Leadership Training for Christ, and for our new Youth Evangelism Outreach programs. There will be an information / orientation meeting in the large auditorium at 6:00 pm to give general information about both LTC & YEO. Then there will be separate meetings for further information, organization and sign-up with YEO meeting in Room 3 and LTC in the kitchen. I pray that 100% of our Youth Group will be in one or the other of these training programs. Parents, I do not mean to offend, but I cannot say this too strongly. Be the parent! Help your sons or daughters decide to participate in the program you believe is best for them. Then be the supportive parent to help them learn and grow. Be involved. It will require time, effort, and work....that's parenting, but the seed sown now will produce a wonderful, or a sorry crop in years to come. Right now that is in your hands. Wednesday Night Bible Class "Bible Bowl Challenge" BBC will be an intensive Bible study class open to all Dalton Gardens youth in small age appropriate groups from 3rd - 12th grade. Bible Bowl teams will be developed as learning progresses. Teams will have opportunities to qualify for competition at Cascade College, Richland church of Christ, perhaps other congregations, as well as here at home, and the LTC convention in Phoenix. We will begin this class study of the book of Genesis on Wednesday night, September 12th, and we will meet from 6:30 - 7:30 every Wednesday night. This careful study of the Bible's first book will build stronger foundations for our faith, and clearer understandings of God. In class, team study and competition will be expected of all participants. Travel to other places will be optional. All of our young people are encouraged to participate.
Bible Hour...... Honors Sunday, September 9, after worship there will be a Pizza / Cake & Ice Cream lunch party in the small auditorium for all Bible Hour children and their parents to honor those who have memorized the books of the Bible.
