Family August 5, 2001 Short ByStuff Dave ShanerA very special Thank You to all who have helped in our follow-up of our Vacation Bible School Guests. It was amazing to see 80 loaves of various kinds of homemade bread come into the office. In addition to our bakers many have taken the time to deliver and visit with our guests. It was also wonderful to hear the comments that the parents had of the church here and the love that was shown to their children. It takes all of us working together to be the church that the Lord desires us to be. Everyone has a part whether it be studying the scriptures with someone, teaching a group class, baking in the Soup Kitchen or elsewhere, engaging in prayer, or many other areas of service. When the body functions as it should, the body grows. When one part is hurting, the other parts rush to its aid to help it recover. This is normal, but not as much growth occurs. One of our newer members asked us to pray for him and his family that they might be able to find what their function is in the body of Christ here. Ask yourself, am I contributing to the health of the body or am I causing the body to work harder? All of us, at time, get out of our element. That may even be good. But let's be sure that each of us is doing what we do best for the overall health of the body of Christ. This is David Rude's last week working with us as a summer intern. He has been a great asset, from helping in the office, to working with the teen group, to teaching, to being the VeggieTown Mayor. David is a student at Cascade College and is majoring in Bible with plans to become a minister. Working at the church here has been his summer job. Next week, we will be taking up a special collection on his behalf to help with his schooling expenses. We would like to encourage you to be generous and help David as he has helped us a great deal. This week is Junior Camp. I will be gone this week directing this session. Preteen Camp starts next Sunday. Be sure to keep all the campers and staff in your prayers. Have a Great Week! "...let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream" Amos 5:24

Mike's Memos Well Mike was at camp this past week, and so I (David Rude) had the pleasure of writing in Mike's place. I have noticed, in my short span of life, that we as Christians, seem to have ups and downs in our lives. And that is pretty normal. Even Jesus had some rough times in his life. Sure he knew that when he came here he had to die for all of us. But given his situation, we would almost definitely fall short of our goal. But if we make Jesus our focal point as we are walking along in life, then we are sure to have a better time in the struggles we are faced with. I am reminded of the times that I went out on the ocean with my dad and brothers. Going across the bar, (that is where the ocean and the Columbia river collide) most of the time, it is really, really rough. The boat went up, and I was able to see land, and then the boat would go down, and then there was only water where ever I would look. And as a direct result of looking at the swells, I got nauseous, and soon after lost my breakfast. But when I kept my eyes on the horizon, or the land (if it was visible) then I was fine. Like wise with Jesus, we need to keep our focus on Him. If we don't, then things will come about in our lives that will distract us from our goal. Which is, being soul winners for Jesus. We need to keep on fishing. God will always provide people who are hungry, and if they take the line of Jesus, then they will be pulled in out of the ocean and to the safety found in God. But we have to be willing to trust that God will take care of us in our time of need. Camp Prince's Pine We are in need of three scholarships for kids to go to camp. If you can help with any or all of the $65 fee, please see Mike Reeves, or call the office.TNT THURSDAY NIGHT FOR TEENS SCHEDULE

Shepherd's Corner Have you ever been beaten down by the burdens of life? Maybe to the point of despair? You felt like no one cared or even noticed your predicament. There is a song that we sing occasionally that talks about that. Let's look at the words of the first verse. "I traveled down a lonely road and no one seemed to care. The burden on my weary back had bowed me to despair, I oft complained to Jesus how folks were treating me, and then I heard him say so tenderly. "My feet were also weary upon the Calvary road; The cross became so heavy I fell beneath the load, be faithful weary pilgrim the morning I can see, just lift your cross and follow close to me." I don't remember a time that I have been able to sing those words without tears filling my eyes, because no matter how down I have been, no matter how bad things seemed to be, Jesus understands because he's been there and worse . He encourages us to be faithful and stick with him. There is light at the end of the tunnel and Jesus can help us to see it. So next time you're down try to remember the words of this song and the thoughts of the master. -Scott Rouse
