Family News July 1, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner Jesus came to earth to seek and save the lost. He also patterned and taught a lifestyle that all who would be disciples are to emulate in order to be his follower. He came because of one reason - Sin. Sin is more than just a thoughtless act or a simple mistake that anyone could make. It is a power at work in the world whose chief aim is to destroy you and all that God opposes. Because of the holiness of God, His perfection, his justice, sin can not simply be overlooked as if it was nothing. The magnitude of sin demands a drastic measure in order to offset the damage it has done. God, in His wisdom, decided to sacrifice his son as an offering for sin. This plan was set in motion even before the foundation of the earth was laid. He was able to foresee the decisions of man and what it took to set things right. He told the tempter, Satan, in the garden, after sin had been introduced into the world that one born of woman would one day come to crush his head. From that time on, Satan determinedly tried to wipe out the seed that would eventually ruin him. The scriptures describe it as a war which took place in heaven (Revelation 12). When he had Jesus crucified, the devil thought he had won. But Jesus defeated sin by being raised from the dead opening the door for you to also be raised from the dead. Our nation is getting older. It is said that in the year 2020, in America, there will be more people older than 65 than younger. It seems that many people that we have grown up knowing from TV, Carroll O'Connor, Jack Lemmon, among many others are dying. This trend will continue, despite the fact that we are living longer and longer. But no matter how long you live, nobody will escape this ultimate effect of sin. Someday, all of us will take one last breath and die. Stanley Shipp, once asked "why do we spend millions and millions of dollars to live a few extra years on earth only for that person to go to hell?" If only we could devote our energies into what Jesus did with his. He came to seek and save us from eternal damnation so that we could live eternally with Him! This is why we have missions. It starts right where you are. God says that all people are lost, not because they don't know Jesus, but because they have sinned. With that postulate, we are to go into all the world and preach the gospel. The ones who believe and are baptized into Christ will be saved. Those who reject this will be lost. An attitude that has formed in the Lord's church is that because a person is a good person, God somehow will save him anyway. God is able to do anything He wants, but he has already worked the plan for us to be saved. It involves acceptance to the gospel of Jesus Christ on His terms not our own. Any person is deceived that thinks he can go to heaven because he is good enough. The only person who has ever lived who is good enough is Jesus. Therefore, the Lord has asked us to spread the message of salvation throughout the entire earth. That is why the Antioch church sent Paul and Barnabas out as missionaries. They knew that unless someone told them the message of salvation, that they would never get it. That is still true today. Unless someone is told, that person will never get it. God has asked you and me to be that person. Start right where you are. Model His life. Put in a good word for Jesus as you have the opportunity. Enlist the help of others. And if you can not go throughout the earth, then cheerfully support those who do. Jesus died for people. He died for you. I don't understand it all, but I am thankful He did. There will be a new class on Wednesday evenings, starting July 11, on how to share your faith with others. Let's put our minds together, study the Word, and help to make Jesus' dream a reality. Have a Great Week!! Then Jesus came to them
and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the
very end of the age." - Matthew 28:18-20

Mike's Memos America seems to have finally become distressed about the moral erosion of our nation. To our shame, most Christians have sat and silently watched as sexual immorality has engulfed us. We've witnessed the disintegration of the family without a whimper. We've watched as 1.5 million babies per year have been aborted. Gunshots are common in our streets, young boys gang rape a classmate, thieves break into our homes, schools are unsafe for our kids, and we finally admit - America is suffering from a moral crisis. This admission betrays the self-centeredness that brought us here. Our moral chaos reminds me of the riveting account of Sodom's destruction found in Genesis 18 & 19. While righteous Abraham bargains with God to spare the wicked city for his nephew, Lot's sake, God's angels are threatened by the insidious lust of the men of Sodom. Three powerful elements converge in this account. The first is God's incredibly patient love. God loves Abraham so much, and his patient hope that people will repent of their wickedness is so great, that he listens to Abraham's pleading. The second element found in the Sodom story is the depth of degradation to which mankind can sink. In bold contrast to Jehovah's patient love, the self-centered, militant, lustful, angry, immoral men of Sodom demand that the angels be sent out of Lot's house for their sexual perversions. And, the third element is this - God does not tolerate evil. He is patient. He is kind. But He does not rejoice with evil, and He will not sit idly by and be mocked by mankind. We've all seen parents who, in the name of loving their children, have been so lax and permissive that they've produced teenagers, with a cynical, mocking, sneering, condescending, self-centered disdain for all authority. These parents have not done themselves nor their children any favors. When God's heart is broken by man's inhumanity to men, God disciplines. Perhaps nowhere in scripture or history have these three elements - God's love, man's awful lust, and God's decisive discipline - collided with such intensity as on Golgotha. In this horribly, beautiful scene God writes the final page. When God's love confronts human sinfulness, God wins. And when human hearts respond to God's love, we win! As history attests, mankind may still choose an immoral course. We may still choose to mock Jehovah God in our homes and in our nation. Only if we respond to God's incredibly patient love can we be spared his just and inevitable discipline. Shepherd's Corner Since the Elders are now meeting on Wednesday evening, I would like to see the members invite the Elders to their homes. The Elders plan to ask you, but it can be either way. This is an excellent way to get to know each other, share your faith and develop strong bonds of love. Jesus spent quality and quantity time with his disciples which helped bond them together. The faith gained by the friendship helped them to reach out to all the world and share Jesus. We need to build our own relationships to support one another as we reach out to the community. God Bless each one of you. Elder, LaMont Petersen will be available every Tuesday in the church office from 8:00-12:00. Available for any need. Two elders will also be available on Sundays from 4 to 5pm.

Reeves Report: Trekking for God Mountain climbing and off-road biking are two activities that are not often associated with being a missionary; but Friday found David Reeves and team mate Matt Miller climbing Mount Kabiye in order to visit some of the villages of the Kabiye people. Four-wheel drive just won't make it on some of the remote and narrow trails which must be taken to reach many of the Kabiye villages, so two wheels (mountain bikes) are the preferred mode of transportation, until the feet must take over. Even the cities of Togo, W. Africa seem remote to most of us; but there are people in rural areas who have never had a chance to hear the good news that God loves them and has sent Jesus to die for their sins for that they can live eternally with Him. The plan for Saturday is to survey more mountain villages: Niada, Kabanda, Tchabouga, Bohouda, and Leguelegue in order to find out if any denominations have ever contacted these people. First one must meet and talk to the chief, and then other villages may be approached. The rainy season is just around the corner. Already it is raining 2-3 times a week. This hopefully will cool the temperatures, but also provides more breeding opportunities for the mosquitoes. Malaria is still a threat. Please pray for the health of all on the team, especially the children. Togo Team Would anyone be interested in helping Earlene Reeves with the postage of prepackaged envelopes of items, that have been requested from David and Becky in Togo, Africa? The envelopes are sealed and are ready for the mail. Contact Earlene at 762-8024 if this is something you could help out with.
