MAY 20, 2001

Stuff   Dave Shaner

When Jesus created the church, he created a family. The church represents a lot of things. According to Timothy's letter, it is the pillar and foundation of the truth - I Timothy 3:15. To the Ephesians, it is the agency through whom God's manifold wisdom is to be made known - Ephesians 3:10. Several books of the New Testament refer to the church as a family - Galatians 6:10; Ephesians 3:15; Hebrews 2:11; I Peter 4:17.

What are some qualities of functional families? Most important is that they love each other. Each of them may have irritations and warts, but they still will defend the family against anyone or anything. Another is that they will sometimes disagree with each other. Again, however, this is not a basis for not being in the family. An important feature of a functional family is communication. This is an area where many families fall short. We often don't like to talk about some things and just superficially cover others. Listening is a vital part to good communication. James said that, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires." The Lord expects us to be long on listening while being more cautious in our speech. When problems arise, we must seek out one another and resolve differences. Paul publicly pleaded with Euodia and Syntyche to get along. They had both labored with Paul in the building up of the kingdom. He knew that a house divided against itself can not stand. Successful families also spend a lot of time with each other. The early church met together daily for the purpose of study, encouragement, worship, and fellowship. Everyone in the family of God today leads busy lives, but we must make time for each other because we are all in the same family.

The church belongs to the Lord. He created it. He is also the one that will sustain it. We must cooperate with Him to be good family members. Despite all of the faults of individual members, Christ Jesus has accepted us just as we are to become whom He wants us to be. The Lord's church is still the single most important family/agency on earth. Always seek to build the church up by building each other up.

Have a Great Week !!

"He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy."

-Proverbs 28:13

Mike's Memos

Roses, Roses, Roses

Spring is lovely. God paints his world in beautiful shades of green, and then highlights it with brilliant floral colors. We relish the bright yellow splashes of the daffodils and the forsythia bushes....the varied hues of the tulips, and the soft pink of the flowering crabapple trees. And soon the roses will begin to bloom, bringing beautiful colors and fragrance which lasts all the way to frost. There's nothing quite like a rose, and the giving and receiving of roses is always special.

If I may, I'd like to pass out a few verbal roses in this week's column. You know, some roses bloom in obvious places and are noticed by everyone, while others, like Kipling's Rhodora, bloom in quiet secluded places. Serving unnoticeably has its special blessing, but may I help us notice a few quiet roses among us.....

There's Debbie Yanzick who spends hours each week planning and implementing a great Bible Hour program. There's Jack Pierce who stays late after services to be sure the lights are off and the building is locked...as well as trying so hard to take care of the many benevolence requests. There's Earlene Reeves who puts together a very attractive monthly calendar, and spends many late nights cleaning up after the many activities in the building. Then there's Kim Frisk and her wonderful crew who keeps the soup kitchen sharing with the community, There's Teri Dupey who is a constant encourager...especially for the office staff. There's George and Joanna Wuest who constantly go about quietly serving in so many ways. Not to mention our shepherds and their wonderful wives, the Archers, Bob & Jennie, Warren & Lynn, Tim Frahm who spends evenings and Saturdays keeping the financial records, Paula Jaynes and Monica Keough who quietly serve in so many areas......and there are so many others who continue to serve, and serve, and serve,

Isn't it wonderful to be a part of such a beautiful rose garden?!!

"UNDER THE INFLUENCE"

Today a group of our teens along with David Rude, the Dupeys and the Simpsons are in Kennewick for the Tri-Cities Youth Rally. I know they have enjoyed a great weekend of fellowship with other Christian teens, and learned from some excellent Bible classes. Pray for a safe trip home.

CCS Corner - School News

The Light Continues to Shine . . . . (Because of You)

The staff, students, and school board appreciate the response you have given us about the Church's school.

We have had an overwhelming response of support to continue this Church mission effort.

The school continues to put God first in shining His light! This guidance and direction moves the children, and future of our Church, down the right path.

We are building an army for God. Jesus said, "You are the light of the world . . . Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14,16

We continue to stress the importance of the scripture: "The Lord is my light and my salvation." Psalm 27:1

We appreciate all of you that attended our "super" talent show, Thursday night. This was great fellowship for the Church, our parents, and school family! We are always thankful for your support of this mission effort.
