April 8, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner Next week, each of us will have a great opportunity to be able reach out to some one in need of the Lord. There are times in a person's life when they are more reachable than at others. Easter is a time when many will consider going to church when they would not at a different time. Granted, "Easter" is not a biblical holiday, nor is it a time that Christians are expected to honor. But the religious world recognizes this as a time of celebration in honor of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Christ is one of the most important topics in the Bible. It is the very core of our hope. Without the resurrection, we will have been deceived and, as Paul words it, would be of all men most pitied. But with the resurrection of Christ being true, we have the opportunity to ring the message out to all who would hear it. Next Sunday, we will honor Christ's death, burial, and resurrection as we take the Lord's Supper together. The entire service will center around this meal that Jesus instituted the night before he died on the cross. The Lord's Supper was intended for Christians as a time to remember Christ and his body, the church. When the visitor can observe what takes place in an assembly setting, often times he will walk away convicted that God is with us and he will to fall down worship God (I Corinthians 14:24-25). Many churches do not take the Lord's Supper each week while many do not even take it at all. Why do the churches of Christ take it every week? There is no command from scripture to do so. There is no command that says it is wrong to take it on any other day. Yet the weekly observance of this meal is in total keeping with scripture. First of all, we now that Jesus instituted it before he died with instructions that whenever we do take it to take it in remembrance of him (Matthew 26). We further learn that this is an activity meant for the entire body ( I Corinthians 11). It is not intended for the individual to take at a separate time from the gathering of God's people together. It is intended to bring about unity within the church. We find that early Christians met every first day of the week (I Corinthians 16:2). We also have an example of them taking the Lord's Supper at this time(Acts 20:7). We also have the corroboration of history that this was a regular habit of the early church to do this together at this time. Even beyond implicit statements, in light of the world's constant barrage against the Christian lifestyle, we need a regular time to remind ourselves of what we are about. The Lord's Supper enables us to prioritize what is most important. It is possible to allow it to become merely a ritual. But it can also be a "ritual" to help stabilize your faith as you put first things first. All Christians need this every week time. We are to continue this habit until Jesus comes again when we will take it with him together in heaven. Have a Great Week!! For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.. - I Corinthians 15:3-4 Bring a Friend Day Next Sunday, April 15 !!! Mike's Memos LTC participants and chaperones will be leaving early Thursday morning for the convention in Phoenix, Arizona. Although, as always, we've had struggles along the way trying to balance the practice times for all the events, this excellent training program has taught us, and helped us develop many talents. Our kids from 3rd through 12th grades, and the leaders, have learned a lot about the book of Revelation, and become more adept at many spiritual leadership skills. Their faith and often their patience...and ours... has sometimes been tried and strengthened. We appreciate the congregation for the support of this part of the youth ministry here. Please be praying for our safety as we travel, and that each will do his best at the convention. TNT - THURSDAY NIGHT TEEN SCHEDULE Apr.12 - No TNT this week
We appreciate all our TNT hosts and hostesses very much. If you would like to be one of those, give me a call. SNF - Saturday Night Fever ........another opportunity for Christian teens in the area to share a time of fellowship, fun, and praise. This event is hosted the last Saturday night of each month by the teens at the Valley congregation. Medical Mission to Guyana, South America Postponed until July of next year Timing is critical to any endeavor, and that is certainly true of a mission effort. Although we have been talking about this medical mission for over a year, we've allowed other things to keep us from getting enough things done soon enough to do a good job. Also, because of the economic crunch we're feeling, we felt it unwise to try to be raising funds for another mission at the present time. Personally, I long to return to Guyana, and renew friendships with brothers and sisters I made on previous trips there. We are not canceling this plan, just postponing it for one year. So, those who want to be a part of a wonderful mission experience, start planning now for next July, when we will take a medical mission team to Guyana, South America.
DON'T FORGET OUR GOALS!!!! 201 in 2001! 52 Baptisms, 52 restored families! We must ALL go to work!!!!
