Stuff  Dave Shaner

This Wednesday evening will be the last day of the current quarter. The following Wednesday we will be having our monthly praise and singing time together. We will be finishing up the book of John in the adult class. Jesus has spent a lot of time with His disciples discussing items that they did not understand. He always seemed to be speaking figuratively, yet Jesus persisted. How many times has the teacher in a particular class seemed to be addressing something that, at the time, seemed not to apply to you at all? Some have worded to me, "Can't we have some classes that are more practical and not so heavy on textual studies?" Some will say something like, "This has nothing to do with where I am right now." Now don't get me wrong, because I think that Christianity is very practical. No proclaimer of the Word has the right to intentionally make God's Word boring, but not every teaching of the Lord is going to be setting off fireworks in your mind either. Many of Jesus' teaching did not make a lot of sense to his disciples at the time. They must have wondered why He was telling them what he was. This suggests that many times we need to hear what we do not think we need to hear at that particular moment.

We often need to hear lessons on where we are not right now. If we wait until the crisis or applicable moment to learn truth, it will never be available to us along the way. The only way to be prepared for situations we may face in the future is to learn them today. Timothy learned the scriptures since his infancy ( II Timothy 3:15), but you can be sure that there was a cumulative effect so that when a certain situation arrived, he had a reservoir from which to draw. The point of all this discussion is to encourage you to come to every class opportunity that you can. One man worded it to me like this. Bible study has 3 stages that appear at different times. One is the cereal stage: dry but nourishing. Another is the meat and potatoes stage: satisfying and filling. Then there is the desert stage: where it becomes a continual feast. You can be sure that God's Word will have an effect on you. Isaiah promises that His word will not come back void. In other words, it will accomplish its purposes if we will but hear it. Be sure to be here each time Bible instruction is offered.

Have a Great Week!!

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink

- I Corinthians 12:13

Special Offer!!!

My recent reading has included a little book titled, The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson. You can read the whole book in less than an hour, but it will give you inspiration for a lifetime. I believe it could be a tool to help empower this congregation this year. It is available for $6.95 from Christian Book Distributors. I'd like to encourage the whole church to order and read this book. Have your orders in with checks made to CBD by next Sunday.

WIN Meeting

There will be a WIN Meeting with the deacons, resource elders, and ministry chairman tonight after Bible Study at approximately 6:45 p.m. If you can not make it, be sure to let Dave Shaner or LaMont Petersen know.

Media Room

Our Bible Class Teachers' resource and supply room has been cleaned and organized AGAIN. It is NOT a storage room for "stuff". It needs to be readily available for teachers to use, but all who use it need to put items back where they belong and help keep the room straightened.

We ask for your cooperation in helping make our Media Room an asset to the education program.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

This last Wednesday was the Soup Kitchen's one year anniversary! Everyone enjoyed the turkey dinner and had a great time of fellowship. Thanks again for all who come each week and make this a special time for our guest.

Use Our Church Library!

Hundreds of wonderful, spiritual books are available for anyone who would like to check them out. The library is located in the room on the right front of the large auditorium. Video tapes are also available for check-out from the conference room between the offices. Please use the check-out system, and return books and tapes in a timely manner.

Wednesday Night LADIES Class

All ladies are welcome to join the study of Esther, Wednesday, 6:30 pm in the small auditorium. This Wednesday, our ladies' class will be discussing chapter 7, "What Goes Around - Comes Around" taught by Nancy Callis.

- When all seems lost, Is it?
- When no one seems to notice, God does.
- When everything seems great for our enemies, Is it?
- When nothing seems just, Is it?

Come join us this Wednesday night to find out the answers to these questions.

** The basket theme for the month of February will be "Take a Break Basket" (containing teas, coffees, goodies, and etc.). Baskets will be donated for the upcoming CCS auction. You are still welcome to make donations to fill January's "Beauty Basket.

It's only a quarter

Several years ago a preacher moved to Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, you better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it. Then he thought, "Oh," forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway the bus company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet."

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver who said, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do, if I gave you too much change." When my friend stepped off the bus. He literally grabbed the nearest light pole, and held on, and said, "O God , I almost sold your Son for a quarter."

Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read.

"LIVING STONES" I Peter 2:4-8

The Youth Group has tons of youth rally preparations to complete in the next four week as we get ready to share a special weekend with 150 to 200 teenage guests. With God's help, we will teach the concept of being "Living Stones" in the Lord's temple using some very innovative, activity-oriented classes.

Some of God's help needs to come through you. Each year MIQVAH weekend requires the wonderful cooperation of the whole Dalton Gardens Family. Please mark your calendars, and plan now to assist in every way you can, especially with the housing of our guests. Be prepared to be hosts and hostesses for as many visiting teens and sponsors as you possibly can. We'll also need lots of cookies for snack times, so get ready to crank up the cookie machines. And, we'll need help providing the Saturday night meal. Prepare your heart to be a wonderful servant for the Lord as we share MIQVAH 2001 to the glory of God.

Mid Winter Retreat

As you read this, about 60 of us are at Camp Prince's Pine, with only a little time left for sledding and fun before we start home. We've spent the last three days and nights sharing the love of Jesus, some time in prayer , singing and Bible study, and great times of fellowship and fun. I write this in anticipation of an awesome weekend, filling us with renewed spiritual strength, excitement, and enthusiasm to carry us ahead to our youth rally only four weeks away. Pray for our safety on the road home.

The LTC Phoenix Convention is only 8 weeks away! Plane tickets have been purchased at $253.30. All those going should give their money to Mark or Kim Borsheim, or the church office ASAP!

LTC students and their parents would like to thank everyone who supported the LTC luncheon last Sunday. All donations were greatly appreciated!

Scholarships Needed

We have 22 young people planning to go to the Phoenix Leadership Training for Christ convention in April. The plane fare of $253.30 makes it very hard, especially for those families who have 3 or 4 going. If anyone would like to help with this special need, please give funds to Mark or Kim, or to the office.

Any amount will help!

Basketball has begun! We are happy to have Jordan Keough as our coach again this year! Thanks Jordan! We have two teams, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th grade. Come and support our team - it's a lot of fun. A schedule is on the wall by the school office.

The Auction is coming! Georgette Rude is working hard at coordinating everything. She is also working with some of the older students on a choreographed production that could rival A.C.U.'s

"Sing Song," or Harding's "Spring Sing!" It's going to be fantastic! She is still looking for 50's pictures.

Auction Thanks!

We appreciate those of you who are working to bring in donations - May the Lord bless your giving hearts!

We need to tell all about this event , so please invite
