January 21, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner We have been involved in a series entitled, "Leading to Light." We have looked at man's biggest dilemma, the problem of sin. We have also glanced at what repentance means. It is more than just being sorry for our mistakes, but it is an attitude that deals with correction of sin. Of course, repentance is something that, primarily, that we do. God will not force us to repent, but don't forget that it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. If we are to understand the gospel, we must understand what God has done, before we can adequately respond to his mercies. The concept of grace is something that we often have trouble understanding. On one hand, there is nothing we can do to deserve receiving it. On the other hand, the apostle, Paul, says, "Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?" The answer was an emphatic, "By no means!" Any Christian must continually put aside all sin in order to not forfeit his grace and mercy. Grace and mercy are similar concepts but viewed from different perspectives. Mercy is not receiving what I deserve. Grace is receiving what I don't deserve. All of us deserve the punishment of eternal condemnation. Even the best of humanity has sinned more times than he can count. Our wages for our good works can never be enough to buy our way in to heaven. Heaven simply can not be bought. It must be received by obedient faith, not perfect faith. When you receive Jesus Christ, God gives you the right to become children of God. Have you been touched by grace lately? Who re some Bible characters who were touched by grace? I am sure that you could name many, but some that spring to mind are Malchus, the slave whose ear was cut off. Even though he was there to help arrest Jesus, the Lord healed his ear. There is also Barabbas, the insurrectionist and robber who certainly was guilty of the the accusation against him. But he was set free when the crowd chose him over Jesus. One thing that he did that was smart, when he saw the chance for freedom, he took it. If only we could do the same when God offers us freedom from our sin. I am also reminded of the Roman centurion who was at the foot of the cross. He likely, had little understanding of what led up to Jesus' death on the cross. He didn't hear him preach or witness his miracles, but he witnessed his death and that was enough to convince him. What about you? Give up your own pride and self-will. Let the work of Christ on the cross be enough. Come to him in faith everyday. HAVE A GREAT WEEK !! When the kindness and love of God our savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. -

All I need to know I learned from Noah's Ark 1. Don't miss the boat 2. Remember that we are all in the same boat 3. Plan ahead. It was not raining when Noah built the Ark. 4. Stay fit. When you are 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. 5. Do not listen to critics, just get on with the job that needs to be done. 6. Build your future on high ground. 7. For safety's sake, travel in pairs. 8. Speed is not everything. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. 9. When you are stressed, float awhile. 10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs, the Titanic by professionals. 11. No matter the storm, when you are with God there is always a rainbow waiting.

Mike's Memos Where do we go from here? At the end of last year, we dreamed into the new year with ambitious goals for renewal and growth.... for all of us to read the Bible and pray every day, to teach local correspondence courses and Bible studies, to win 201 in 2001 including 52 baptisms and 52 restored families. I was encouraged with the response from so many...the positive reactions...the desire expressed for renewal in this church. So, where do we go from here? As one said, it's past time for me and you, and you, and you to get off our duffs and make it happen. PRAY...then DO! If you haven't started daily Bible reading and praying, start today. If you haven't set up a personal Bible study or a correspondence study yet, start today. If you haven't called and encouraged a family that's been missing, do it today. Will you start TODAY? There is a positive sense of excitement in the family. God is among us. I can feel it! I'm convinced that 2001 is going to be a banner year for the Lord's Body here in Dalton. I know He's ready to do His part. Are we? Come on...let's build the family "Won by one in 2001!" Upcoming Youth Events All Teens

CCS Corner School News The Fourth and Fifth graders have been reading an abridged version of Pilgrim's Progress for reading class. We read this week how Christian and his friend Hopeful had been locked in Doubting Castle by the Giant Despair. After spending several hours in the dungeon complaining about their situation, Christian gave a start and said, "What a fool I am to lie in this dark den when I might be a free man! I have a key in my pocket; the name of which is God's Promise. I feel sure it will turn the lock of all the doors in Doubting Castle." How many times do we let doubt and despair get the best of us, and we forget that we have the key right in our pockets?! I pray that my students will take these lessons with them and always remember that key. CCS Fundraiser Peeler Cards are available from the school office or any staff, for $10.00, valued at over $170.00! What a great way to help the school while we save a little funds ourselves.
