January14, 2001 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner We are currently involved in a sermon series entitled Leading to Light. We are doing this for several reasons. We are starting a new year, we want to remind ourselves and others of what it means to be in a right relationship with God. You can start this new relationship at any time, but a new year often symbolizes new beginnings. We have had several challenges to keep the goals of the church close to your heart. One of these is to win the lost. Included in this would be for each of us to know what we can do as a partner with God to bring those not saved to a point where they can receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Last week, we looked at the concept of sin. This is an all too much neglected subject. We have become somewhat paranoid about talking about the biggest problem we have. Because we do not want to come across as negative, we tend to avoid this subject. We would rather talk about what we can do rather than about our real problem. Simply surrounding ourselves with other good works, however, does not erase the guilt of sin. This can only come through the sacrifice of Jesus. Many want to become Christians, but miss the most important reason for doing so. We want to be better people, be better servants, meet the needs of others better. Of course, when it comes our turn to die, we also want to go to heaven. But we don't like talking about ourselves as having a serious deficiency - we are sinners. We like to think of ourselves as good people, not sinners. After all, everyone sins, right? The fact of the matter is that if, in coming to Christ, you do not deal with your sin, you have missed the purpose of why Jesus came. He came to seek and to save the lost - Luke 19:10. Many people regard themselves as going to heaven with no idea that they have ever really been lost. Sin is an affront to God. He is holy and because of His holiness, sin can not co-exist with God. For us to ever stand in the presence of God, our sin has to be dealt with. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23. The wages of sin is death - Romans 6:23. There is no question that we are guilty. What each of us needs is a pardon. If you are going to receive this pardon, you will have to have a good lawyer. This is where Jesus comes in. He is law on our behalf. He satisfies the justice and the atoning sacrifice that meets all the demands of the holiness of God. Only Jesus enables us to stand before God with all of our sins washed away. But all of this does not come cheap. He took his own lifeblood to accomplish this. It also takes faith on your part to receive what he offers you. What is involved in this faith? Be sure to be here each week and invite your friends so we can explore the wonder of this grace together. HAVE A GREAT WEEK !! Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. -

Slow Me Down, Lord Slow me down, Lord Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amid the confustion of the day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations - of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from a good book. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life's enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny. -Wilferd A. Peterson

Mike's Memos WWJD - What Would Jesus Do? I was wondering....what would Jesus do if he were starting his church in AD 2001 instead of AD 33? I mean, he came in a time before denominationalism and non- denominationalism; before Catholicism and Protestantism; before the Moslem religion. He came during a time of religious idolatry, emperor worship, and Jewish nationalism and ritualistic worship. He came to clear the slate and bring something brand new..... "to complete an old system, that he might establish the new."(Heb.10:9) I was just wondering....if he came into our religiously splintered world, what would he do??? In Matthew 16, just before Jesus began to prepare his disciples for his death, he asked them who they thought he was. Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Christ's response was......... "upon this rock I will build my church...." I wonder how he feels when he looks at what we have done with that church...the church he built "which he purchased with his own blood".(Acts 20:28) When God looks down and sees a world confused and fighting over religious differences, people who have a basic need for the God who alone can bring completion and fulfillment to life, churches who sincerely desire to reflect His glory but can't seem to get outside of self, do you suppose He wonders how we missed the point? I was wondering, if Jesus came today instead of 2000 years ago, would he say that it's okay to go to the church that suits us...that we enjoy...that meets our needs, or would he expect us to put aside our old ways and our personal preferences , and be united as one body, one church, willingly listening to his instructions and following his example? Would he attempt to unite the existent religious bodies, or do away with the old and establish the new? Would he want us to obey him unquestioningly and follow his teachings exactly in order to build his church in 2001? I was just wondering..............WWJD?
