December 24, 2000 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner We would like to welcome all of our guests this day as we honor the birth and life of Jesus Christ. Christmas is known as a time of giving, but the most well known scripture of all time, John 3:16, is a verse about what God gave to us - his very own son. I like the Hallmark company slogan and apply it to our God - When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best. God indeed is the great giver, and his gifts come every day. His daily manna gives us spiritual sustenance to battle against the forces of this world. Remember that he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. I do pray that each of you will have a great holiday season. Be sure to thank God for his bounty and for blessing us with family. As we thank God for what He has done for us at home, be sure to remember our missionaries, specifically Ralph & Anna Crump, Dave & Becky Reeves, Jerry & Pam Sisemore, along with others that this church has been privileged to have helped. At this time, even though they are glad to be where they are, other cultures do not celebrate the holidays in the same way. They are sacrificing their time which would normally be with family to serve the Lord in the mission field. I am sure that they would appreciate an e-mail, a snail mail, or a gift to let them know how much we appreciate them. Be sure to pray for them this week. We have been tremendously blessed with some great help in the office over the last 2 months. I will likely miss somebody, but a special Thank You goes to Jan & Jim Almond, Pat Riggs, Lynelle Dehlbom, Jean Grow, David Morgan, Esther Atkinson, Sally Archer, Paula Jaynes, and many of the teens. Even after a new secretary comes on board, we would like to encourage anybody that can to come and help out. As we work together, the load on everybody is a little lighter. Remember that there will be no formal Bible Study Groups or LTC tonight. The New Year's Eve Fellowship will be here at the building next Sunday evening. Be here to share in the evening with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Let's together bring in the New Year with the Lord on our hearts and minds. More details can be found in this bulletin. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS ! For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah

Bible Study Groups With December 24 traditionally a family evening, the regular Bible Study Groups will not be meeting next Sunday evening. The following week, being New Year's Eve, they will also not be meeting. However, we would like to encourage everyone to come to the building for the New Year's Eve get together. There are several Bible Study Groups meeting throughout the community during the week. These are an excellent way to gain some added prayer and fellowship, some Bible study, and is also an excellent way to introduce your friends to Jesus Christ. See the back of the bulletin for a complete list of Bible Study Groups. Call the Bible Study Group leader for where the group is meeting.

Mike's Memos I have spent most of the morning responding to an email which was very disturbing to me. Although it might not have been intended to read that way, it seemed to be saying, as has many things I have read and heard people say lately, that the church of Christ...the church belonging to Jesus... had its beginnings in the 19th century restoration movement, in the early history of America. What happened on the first Pentecost after the resurrection, AD 33?!!! If I were not 100% convinced that the church I belong to began with the teachings Jesus left with his apostles, inaugurated with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on that special, God selected day, I would see little reason for being committed to it. That is why this upsets me so. The religious world is so mixed up, and true Christians have so allowed denominational thinking to weasel its way into their hearts, that we have an epidemic of apathy and lack of commitment to the Lord's Family. We have bought into the concepts that "one church is as good as another"..."attend the church of your choice"..."it doesn't matter what church you belong to, we're all going to the same place"..."church attendance really isn't necessary anyway". Hogwash! Jesus said, "Upon this rock I will build my church....." I know it is outmoded and not politically correct, but it is still imperative that we search the scriptures for the characteristics which will identify those people who truly make up that church which Jesus died to build, and save. That identified church did NOT begin in America with the Restoration. It began when people responded to the gospel of Christ preached by Peter on Pentecost. Grace is a beautiful concept...a reality for which we are eternally grateful, as it makes up for the bungling mistakes we make as His children. But we know God only extends his grace to those who choose to follow in the steps of His Son, doing the things obedience requires of them to be called "children of God". We cannot do that just any way or place that suits us. We must do it when and where and how He instructs us. Like Jesus, we must choose "to do the will of The Father"..... that we may receive His grace. All those who do that are Christ's church. And that requires absolute allegiance and 100% commitment.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA - Zig Ziglar Several years ago the list of people in Who's Who in America were analyzed. Researchers discovered that it took 25,000 laboring families to produce 1 child who would be listed in Who's Who. It required 10,000 families in which the father was a skilled craftsman, 6,000 Baptist preachers, 5,000 lawyers, 5,000 Presbyterian preachers, 2,500 dentist, and 1,200 Episcopalian priests to produce someone who's listed in Who's Who. However, every 7 Christian missionary families produced a member of Who's Who. I can only speculate on the reasons for the remarkable difference. Surely most of the preachers from the various denominations were men and women of faith, but I believe the missionaries, in most cases, demonstrated a stronger commitment. Their example demonstrated their faith and courage to their children. Also, they probably did not have many things to give to their children, but the mother and father, with fewer distractions such as daily newspapers and television, were probably spending an unusual amount of time with them. The kids had a day-to-day example and a chance to study what real success was all about. Needless to say, the parents were teaching and preaching the Bible every day and felt a unique relationship with God through the person of Jesus Christ. Undoubtedly the role modeling and demonstration of their faith played a significant part in the development of the children. All of us have heard that we teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are, which is exactly what God tells us in Luke 6:40 (NKJV): "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher." My mother repeatedly said to me as a young father, "Son, your children pay more attention to what you do than to what you say." In many cases, the missionary family had to learn to communicate in a different language from their native language and get along with people of different cultures, which brought about a maturing of the youngsters. Then, when the kids returned to America to live, they had a chance to view the difference in the opportunities in America, and they capitalized on those opportunities. The bottom line from Zig: God's Word is an enemy for depression, an escape from temptation, the promise of the future, as well as a guide, hope and inspiration for now and always.
